The Origin Story of the Bodhi Brigade

Bodhi Rook is one of my faves in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, so it was pretty upsetting to see how he got (and still does get) the short end of the stick when it comes to being represented in Star Wars merch. ‘Cause if you know me, I’m the perfect consumer; I want to buy all the things that feature my favorite characters! Plus, knowing that the ensemble cast was comprised of so many POC actors was so important to many Star Wars fans, myself included. And the fact that they cast Riz Ahmed, a Muslim actor, in a heroic role rather than a stereotypical terrorist one is of utmost importance. POC of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds want to see themselves represented in the types of stories we love (in roles that aren’t one dimensional and stereotyped) because it makes us feel like we matter. And when it’s something as epic as Star Wars, we want the merch too!

#REPRESENTATIONMATTERS

It’s been a couple years since Rogue One came out, but even now his absence on merch featuring the core team is absolutely noticeable. Even when Disneyland had their Season of the Force event going on in Tomorrowland a few years ago, every character from Rogue One could be found in banners and displays except for Bodhi. He played an integral role in Rogue One — he’s the one that delivered Galen Erso’s message about how to destroy the Death Star and came up with the Rogue One call sign a.k.a. the movie’s damn title for eff’s sake!

So one day last year, I tweeted about it:

Screen Shot 2018-07-04 at 8.21.59 AM.png

After that one tweet, Alice, who I became friends with through Instagram, retweeted it and CC’d s her sister Cat. And Gladys, who I’ve been internet friends with for years, also chimed in on her disdain for the lack of Bodhi. I remember Syl, another longtime internet homie, chimed in too, but I can’t find her tweet!

From there, the Bodhi Brigade was born! Its members include myself, Syl, Gladys, Alice, Cat, Laura, and Amber. Originally, we had a few other members but they have since left (we still have much love for them though!). We didn’t officially christen ourselves with the Bodhi Brigade name until months of back and forth tagging each other in every single Bodhi/Riz Ahmed related thing we came across (shout out to OG member Gwen for coming up with the name); we eventually made a private chat on Twitter to make it easier to share all the Bodhi/Riz news 🙂

Sometime before the private chat was made, I proposed that we start a Bodhi related gang complete with denim jackets/vests, because I sooo badly wanted to be in a cool girl gang with the apparel to show it off, and we practically were one, so why not?! Luckily, everyone was on board with the idea! Alice and Cat (I think) found the perfect vests that were reminiscent of Bodhi’s jumpsuit at Target, and I searched Etsy for a place to make a custom patch (WrightCreationsPA made our gang name banner, half Rebel/Empire, and Bodhi backpack patches!).

A majority of us were going to be at SDCC so we decided to meet up and debut our awesome Bodhi swag! Laura came through and made a life-size Bodhi cutout so we could take pics with “Riz.”

The Bodhi Brigade is still going strong! Our love for Bodhi Rook/Riz Ahmed brought us together, but our love for Star Wars, passion for representation of POC in the shows and movies we love, porgs, and Rose Tico are a few other things that’s brought us so much closer. And through sickness and personal triumphs, we’re all constant cheerleaders in each others lives and I couldn’t be happier to call these women my friends and sisters ❀

PS: Riz Ahmed totally saw us on Twitter last year and retweeted Laura’s tweet and this has been written from the great beyond because we are all dead and are just wandering around as ghosts.

First Order of Business

I know it’s only September, and December seems like a long ways away, but The Last Jedi will be in theaters before we know it!!! I can hardly contain my excitement, especially since Force Friday II has come and gone. I cannot wait to see Rose and Paige Tico because they’re not just any Asians in space — they’re Asian sisters in space!! IN A STAR WARS MOVIE!!! I actually got really teary eyed when images of Rose were first released. She’s Asian, has bangs, and a round face just like me! I finally feel like I can see myself in a fandom I love so much. Oh, and the Porgs have stolen my heart. My newfound love for them could probably be another blog post on its own, but today’s post is all about General Hux aka my Huxband. I know, I know. I belong in the trash compactor with Captain Phasma. I just have a massive crush on Domhnall Gleeson, okay? 😛

These outfit pics were actually taken last January —  I just never got around to posting them. Whoops! Seeing that today is Thursday (#TBT), it seemed like an appropriate time to write about it. At first glance I’m pretty sure you can’t really tell it’s Hux related, or could even pass as a Disneybound/casual cosplay, but I went with an all black motif like his ensemble in The Force Awakens. I wore my striped belt to emulate the ones on his coat sleeves, a red necklace because… uh… he’s a ginger, and my Captain Phasma purse from Loungefly. You can’t really see, but on my lapels I’m wearing a General Hux brooch I made myself and a silver pin of the First Order’s logo (check out up-close photos below).

When people ask if I’m on the light side or dark side, I always leaned towards the dark. I was all about giving into my negative feelings (they work wonders for writing angsty poetry, y’know?), and I can’t relate to the zen-ness of the Jedi. Plus, the dark side is so damn fashionable. Hashtag: Swag for Days! Whoever the Empire and First Order hired to make their uniforms, they are the Coco Chanel of a galaxy far, far, away. But after watching Star Wars: Rebels and Rogue One (Bodhi Rook = other space bae), I couldn’t help but think maybe I’m not on the dark side. Maybe I’m a rebel scum! They struggle with their feelings in wanting to do the right thing; they still let anger and hate consume them for just a bit, and then they get their sh!t together.

Much like Bodhi, I’ve defected. Shhh… don’t tell Huxband. Haha!

Are you excited for The Last Jedi? Are you just as obsessed with Porgs as I am? Did you buy new Star Wars swag on Force Friday II? Let’s talk about it in the comments section!

A Bespin We Will Go

star-wars-her-universe-loungefly-geek-fashion

Well, well… what have we here? An ensemble entirely dedicated to Cloud City? Hell yeah, that’s what we have here! Lately it feels like I’m wearing something Star Wars 90% of the time, so anyone who knows me outside of my blog are probably like, “this isn’t anything new.” There are days where I’m like, “Okay, try something different,” but I’ll end up in something Star Wars anyway. But it’s been a few parsecs since I’ve shared any of my ensembles on Le Fancy Geek! So it’s not like y’all know what’s going on with me. Also, wearing a flouncy a-line skirt with crinoline underneath is a bit much for some, so I had make sure this May 4th’s outfit post was, as the kids say, extra. Haha!

Modern-vintage-pinup with a touch of geek chic has been my aesthetic for quite some time now, so this Cloud City skirt by Her Universe is every girly nerd’s dream come true. I paired it with my pink top with lattice details, my denim vest (so I could wear some of my fave Star Wars pins like my glittery Millennium Falcon, Lando, and Sons of Anarchy style Rebel Scum pin), and my adorable Millennium Falcon purse! Another thing I’ve been obsessed with lately are novelty purses — particularly ones of the geeky variety (obviously). Loungefly and Bioworld have been coming out with some really fantastic ones as of late. They’re seriously like Kate Spade for nerds.

I’ll be working for a good chunk of the day, but of course I’ll be rocking some Star Wars threads (like any other day). 🙂

No Rescuer Required

I know I put up a Valentine’s Day themed outfit post last week, but I really like what I wore on the day itself, so I thought I’d share it on the blog too! The t-shirt I wore is from TeePublic and features a Star Wars x Disney mashup by James Hance of Penny from The Rescuers as Princess Leia. He’s one of my favorite geek artists of all time and he just seems like a really swell guy. This judgement solely comes from following him on Twitter and Facebook. I urge you to check out his artwork! Not only does he do great geek mashups, but creates some mind blowing portraits of fictional faves; he recently did a beautiful portrait of Princess Leia with flowers that I’m in love with. The header on his website is “Relentlessly Cheerful Art,” and if his work doesn’t put a smile on your face, something is legit wrong with you!

teepublic-shirt-star-wars-james-hance-disney

Like I mentioned in my Valentine’s Day post, I didn’t have any plans. But throughout the day I felt pretty zen… and then super sick because all I ate was chocolate covered strawberries, marshmallows, Girl Scout cookies, and cupcakes. That aside, I didn’t even cringe when I looked at that Facebook feature “On This Day” where it shows you all the things you ever posted on a particular day on Facebook. A photo album full of pictures from my first Valentine’s Day with my ex popped up, but rather than roll my eyes and wistfully look at the pics, I just kept scrolling to see what else I posted. And then I came across this gem:

“Okay, look. I had to ask myself a really hard question. Who do I love most? And the answer was so obvious. It was staring me in the face the whole time. The person I love most is me. I love me most. Look, if I could run across the beach into my own arms, I would.” – Jackie Burkhart

I posted that quote from That 70’s Show on Valentine’s Day 2011. I think I relate to it more now than I did then. In 2011, I was 25 and so desperate to find the kind of love that was only seen in romantic comedies and Disney movies. At that time I was in an on again/off again “situationship” with a guy I pined over for so long — 3 years to be exact. For 3 years it was very “will we or won’t we?!” Or maybe it ended by that time? I don’t remember, and I deleted the guy’s “break up” email a long time ago, so I can’t look it up in GMAIL for reference. I’m sure I posted that quote to prove a point. Like, “Yeah, I don’t need a man. I HAVE ME!” when really I was an emo sack of shit that just wanted to be loved (goddammit)! Today, I can say I’ve experienced the kind of love I always dreamed of as a little girl, but it came and went in what feels like less than 12 parsecs. There are days where I feel completely jaded by how unlucky I’ve been with love, however I don’t put all my energy into dwelling on it like I did when I was in my early 20s. Now, I’m learning to love myself more despite my flaws (and holy shit, do I have many).  There’s a million things I haven’t done, and men can wait! I will choose myself over any dude… besides Rory, obviously. Because every princess needs a furry sidekick! And if I’m going to go along with this whole princess schtick,  I’m going to look up to Leia because she’s the OG self rescuing princess. If my Scruffy Looking Nerf Herder happens to come along one day, so be it. Until then, I’m not sitting by metaphorical wishing well hoping he’ll find me.

Roses Are Red, TIE Fighters Are Gray…

star-wars-style-pinup-loungefly

It’s Valentine’s Day and for once in the past three years I’m not bitter about it. Hooray for progress! I’m not doing anything to celebrate since this holiday is like whateverÂŻ_(ツ)_/ÂŻ, but I did go out and kick it breakfast style with my friend Cailtin yesterday for a holiday that is superior by far: Galentine’s Day! But y’know, as much as I rag on Valentine’s Day like most other single people, it’s kind of hard to truly hate it because Valentine’s Day decorations are completely my aesthetic. This is something I’ve come to terms with. I love all the hearts and the pinks and reds and golds, the roses, the candy, the cute cards… UGH! I just can’t hate it. Everything is too damn cute and pretty. 😛

I didn’t wear this particular outfit today, but I thought it’d be cute to put together a retro geeky pinup look together to share on the blog for Valentine’s Day. Obviously, I had to go with a floral print skirt and Star Wars accessories! The hair flower is something my sister picked up for me a few months ago when she went to some tiki convention in San Diego. I’m obsessed with hair flowers — apparently at my tutoring gig, students refer to me as “the girl who always has a flower in her hair” — so my sister sent me some pics to see if I might want anything. How cute it is?! It’s a bit gaudy, but so fab! And I added a trifecta of Valentine’s Day-ish Star Wars pins to my red velvet top.

I Am One With the Floral, the Floral is With Me

A couple weeks ago my aunt randomly asked me, “Do you want to go to a LuLaRoe party?” My response was obviously an enthusiastic YES! If you’re unfamiliar with LuLaRoe, it’s a clothing company that’s pretty similar to Avon and Mary Kay in the sense that people can sign up and become sellers that work from home either full time or as a side gig. A lot of them set up Facebook groups and post their inventory so you can purchase whatever your heart desires… so long as no one beats you to claiming it! I first heard about the company through my sister as her co-worker sells LuLaRoe on the side. Girl has like 20+ leggings and I don’t know how many dresses or skirts by them! LuLaRoe’s claim to fame seems to be their fun patterned leggings which feel like butter. I own three pairs. Haha!

My aunt’s co-worker invited us to go to her daughter’s LuLaRoe party, so I went just to look. I had no intention of buying anything, but I obviously didn’t leave empty-handed! I got 3 Azure skirts, but when I tried them on I lifted it up over my bust to see if they’d look good as a dress. As you can see, it totally works! I paired this floral lavender one with my a bunch of Star Wars accessories because why not? I also recently ordered some awesome Star Wars enamel pins from BB-CRE.8, so I put them on my denim jacket. One of them is a bouquet of blue tulips coming out of the hilt of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, and the other is a speech bubble that says, “I Am One With the Force… The Force Is With Me” which is Chirrut Imwe’s mantra from Rogue One. That particular pin is really amazing because it glows in the dark (green, like the Force) and on the back it says, “Are you kidding me? I’m blind!” So many little easter eggs packed into one pin… I had to have it! I’ve actually been drooling over the Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader (not pictured) bouquet pins since December, and even placed an order back in January. But it didn’t go through and they sold out! When I saw that they had been restocked, I hit “add to cart” and “buy” in less than 12 parsecs.

I just realized I never gushed about Rogue One when I watched it back in December! I’ve heard a lot of people compare it to Force Awakens, but I don’t quite think that’s fair since Rogue One is a stand-alone film. However, I will say that I had a lot more fun watching Force Awakens because it was like revisiting old friends and seeing new ones, but Rogue One‘s story, to me, was much more compelling and original. And I can’t believe I haven’t seen it a bajillion times! I definitely want to head back to the theater and watch it at least one more time before it goes away. Also, Bodhi Rook and Cassian Andor are my new Star Wars baes. Shhh… don’t tell General Hux I’ve gone rogue against the Dark Side.

The Best Freaking Pilot in the Galaxy

Oh my goodness, how the hell is it November already?! It still feels like SDCC just happened last month, but alas. That was four months ago! The way the end of the year quickly creeps upon us never ceases to amaze and terrify me. Why terrify? Well… because it makes me think about what I have and [mostly] haven’t done all year, and makes me cringe because despite the things I did accomplish, I can’t help but focus on the negative. Y’know how that goes. 😛

I’ve been pretty quiet on here lately, and that’s because I’ve been crazy busy with an internship I just started a month ago in San Francisco! I’ll talk more about it at some other point because I just wanted to quickly share mine and Rory’s Halloween costumes. Him and I dressed up as BB-8 and Poe DAME-eron from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. HA! See what I did there? Poe Dameron. DAME-eron? No? Okay fine, whatever. I thought it was clever.

We were originally going to be Babe and Farmer Hoggett from Babe, but then I saw this BB-8 costume at Petsmart back in August and immediately decided we’d be BB-8 and Poe instead.  I already had the Poe/Finn jacket by Her Universe from Hot Topic so that just saved me a trip from having to find a tweed jacket and whatever else I’d need to dress up as Farmer Hoggett. Plus dressing up like an old farmer versus dressing up like the best freaking pilot in the galaxy — pilot wins hands down! I thought about wearing pants (or trousers incase anyone from Europe is reading this) to be more Poe-like, but I went with a skirt because I’m all about that no-pants life. Except pants would’ve been nice to have on the hayride we went on at Dell’osso Farms. :: cringe ::

All the Loot: My SDCC Haul

Look at my cute lil’ General Hux Huxband Funko Pop figure! Isn’t he the cutest?! He’s one of the many things I picked up at SDCC this year.

So, I finally made a haul video to show off all the awesome stuff I picked up at SDCC. I’ve actually made a few over the last couple years, but never ever got around to actually publishing them. And even though I’ve made a few vlogs already, it’s quite odd because it’s like I’m just talking to myself. And then editing? Uugggh… listening and watching myself talk so much is w-e-i-r-d. WEIRD.

Anywho, you can watch the video down below:

Do you vlog too? Let me know how you get through it! And if you also went to SDCC, I’d love to hear about some of the cool things you picked up too 😀

Anakin, You’re Breakin’ My Heart

At the beginning of the month I got to go to Dapper Day at Disneyland! I knew for sure that I wanted to throw together a fancy looking Star Wars Disneybound, so I decided to seek inspiration from Queen Amidala. She is by far the most dapper character from the Star Wars universe as far as I’m concerned. I mean, the lady has tons of ensembles to choose from! For my Dapper Day outfit I decided to go for her most iconic look: the red and gold outfit we first see her in in Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

When brainstorming outfit ideas, I looked up pictures of it online and paid close attention to certain details as noted below:

If you’ve been a reader of my blog for awhile, you know I’m a stickler for details.

To emulate her headdress, I purchased maroon flower clips to stand in for the maroon lace and garnet gem, and I got these really pretty gold flowers at the Dapper Day Expo the night before. Thank goodness too, because I originally had a bunch of small gold flowers that I was going to put on bobby pins. What a nightmare that would’ve been to frantically make the night before! #ProfessionalProcrastinator

For the fur trimming, I took off the detachable brown fur collar of an old blazer I have and used it as a stole. As you can see in the pictures below, I put a Queen Amidala brooch I made on it along with a heart shaped Vader pin since Anakin’s her boo. I also used my little Darth Vader purse by Loungefly 😀

Other little details include a vintage orange ring that matches the orange bulbs along the hem of Amidala’s dress, a Princess Leia bracelet, and gold chandelier earrings that replicate the ornate gold embroidered details on her dress (or robe?).

It was so much fun seeing so many people dressed all fancy at the park! Hopefully I’ll be able to go to the next Dapper Day event in November, but plans have been made to go next spring 🙂 My friends and I are going to do dapper Marvel Disneybounds. I’m still trying to figure out if I want to do a Loki, Captain America, or Agent Carter inspired outfit. I have a year to decide though, so I’ll let Future Nina deal with that.

Were you at Dapper Day? If so, how’d you dress up? And if you weren’t, what kind of outfit would you like to put together if you did go? Let’s talk aboot it in the comments section!

Dark Side of the Garden

le-fancy-geek-heart-of-haute-vintage-style-dress-loungefly-darth-vader-purse-fashion-blogger

Hey my little, ponies! I archived these outfit pics I took a few months ago and think now is a good time to bust them out. It is Leap Day, after all! This is the outfit I was supposed to wear to my cousin’s wedding in Hawaii back in September, but the material of my dress and shoes didn’t mesh very well with the tropical climate. Thank goodness I packed another dress that worked out well! And how perfect does my little Darth Vader purse go with it? 🙂

Tomorrow I’m supposed to start another Whole 30 again. Either that or I might start during the weekend so I have more time to prep for it. Either way, I’m going to be doing a more modified version because you’re not supposed to have breath mints or gum since it contains added sugar. I refuse to walk around with travel sized mouth wash or just suffer with stinky breath. I’m gonna keep on poppin’ my Altoids, thank you very much! I’m going to continue to drink all my teas too. I got some new ones from Riddles Tea Shoppe that are absolutely delicious, but they contain some ingredients that are Whole30 no-nos. Nothing too crazy though, so I think I should be okay.

Happy Leap Day, y’all! Hope you found yourself making the most of the extra day we got this year. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to try and figure out what book I want to read next!
