ModCloth’s Fit Shop in SF

I hit ModCloth‘s Fit Shop in San Francisco last weekend and had so much fun! If you happen to find yourself anywhere near San Francisco between now and the 17th, I highly suggest you get your bum on over there ASAP!!!

I wrote all about what you can expect to see there and the whole shopping experience on Wear Your Voice Mag.

Check out my article here to read all about it and see more pictures! 🙂

I might be heading back there with Gwen and Gladys next week before the pop-up shop goes away forever. Shrouds of regret keep haunting me for not buying that floral skirt and shoes I tried on in the picture above!

cheers

“Isn’t it pretty to think so.”

On Friday I went to San Francisco with Jen and Shanice since I didn’t have to work in the morning. Yay four-day weekend (for me anyway)!!! While Jen went to school, Shanice and I window-shopped around the downtown area and I picked up a Glinda wand at the Disney Store! But all the walking around we did left us ridiculously tired and the burgers we ate for lunch didn’t pack much energy. And I spent effing $3.50 on orange juice because I was too tired and thirsty to find Jamba Juice (gift card yo!), but it just so happened to be right next to Jen’s school. *grumble* By the time we met up with Jen to take pictures in the studio I was feeling pretty loopy from being malnourished and dehydrated. I lept, danced, spun in the spinny chairs, and made stupid faces during and in between test shots. Lots of silliness occurred (see picture below).

I posed for a few photos for Jen’s digital photography class and did some for funsies. I found a beautiful typewriter on the props table and had to incorporate it into my shoot since it went perfectly with my The Sun Also Rises shirt from Out of Print Clothing! This might look familiar to you as it was on my Christmas Wish List post in December. Tim ended up getting it for me for Christmas 😀 I added a glitzy Peter Pan collar necklace to it that I found at TJMaxx last month. Fancy, yah? Ernest Hemingway probably wouldn’t be impressed, but that’s okay. Me likes it! I read The Sun Also Rises for a Modern American Novel class during my first semester as SFSU. It was the only book I thoroughly enjoyed from that course, which is kind of sad considering that we read five books. Well, I find it sad anyway.

You know what else is sad? I sent my camera off to Best Buy to get it checked out — it’s unfixable and the camera I had is no longer sold/available so now I have to go and look for another one! They gave me a list of cameras that are “comparable” to mine, but they were all regular point and shoots whereas mine was a DSLR. I don’t want to do camera homework! I just know that I’m looking to get another Canon. I’m kinda iffy of the G15, which is basically the upgraded version of my camera, just because it doesn’t have a swivel screen and the screen it does have is exposed. I need the swivel screen. I just do, okay? Okay.

If you happen to be into cameras, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Cheers,
Nina

My DSLR has been on the fritz as of late. It just hasn’t been taking super awesome quality photos like it used to! I took it to Best Buy’s Geek Squad after work this morning since it’s under insurance, but they told me that it seems fine and that if I want it to get checked out, I would have to pay $35 for shipping if whoever looks at it says nothing is wrong with it. WTF, right?! Chuck Bartowski and the Nerd Herd would not put me through this! Well, maybe Jeff and Lester would. <– sorry if you’re scratching your head at my Chuck reference. Go watch Chuck. It’s awesome and Zachary Levi (voice of Flynn Rider from Tangled) who plays the titular character is adorkble! Anyway, what is the point of having insurance on something super ‘spensive if they’re going to make me pay for shipping and stuff? RUGH! I’m sorry, I’m just so frustrated because I rely on that camera for this blog and my Etsy store. But thankfully Tim has an even fancier DSLR and was in town yesterday (I helped him pick out glasses at his optometry appointment, weee!!!) so he offered to take pictures with it. I originally asked him if he could use my phone’s camera. Ha!

Some of you may recognize this skirt since this is its third appearance on my blog. Sorry I’m not sorry it’s been on here so many times, I love it too much and it happens to go with lots of things in my wardrobe! Don’t be surprised when it pops up in future posts 😉 I wore a burgundy blazer with this ensemble too and we took a picture of me in it, but I looked at it again and thought I looked kinda slouchy, so no blazer pic! Sorry. :/ At first I thought it would look weird with the peach pussy bow blouse (I basically got that blouse for free at TJ Maxx because my aunt gave me her TJ Maxx rewards thingy worth $30), but I tried it anyway and thought it worked. I passed by my BFF Shanice’s sister on my way to work and she said she liked my outfit, so yay! There’s proof that someone thought it looked alright too. I actually got quite a few compliments on this outfit yesterday which made me all kinds of happy 🙂

I got my ring with the 18th century looking couple at the flea market two weeks ago. There’s this vendor that my mom’s homies with (she frequents the flea market so much that vendors know her name) had a ziplock bag full of jewelry that was “broken” or “not that good” so I dug through it and found this ring and a bunch of other neat pieces that I deem “good enough.” I don’t know where that bracelet came from, but while trying to clean my room I found it! And my rad gold watch was purchased during my last Disneyland trip. Isn’t it glorious?! It has a bunch of tiny Mickey ears all over ❤

Hope you all have a fantastic Friday and a fabulous weekend! Who’s watching the Super Bowl on Sunday? I’m not! 😀

Cheers,
Nina

Dress-up

I am not ashamed to admit that I still play dress-up, and I’m 110% sure that there are tons of ladies out there that still do. And by dress-up, I don’t mean I do cosplay (although I do own a Wonder Woman costume), I mean I rifle through my closet and try on different things to see what items go together and what doesn’t. I did this a lot with my Barbies as a kid… and my Blythe dolls as a twenty-something. I think putting outfits together is an art form. Sounds silly, but have you seen the people featured on The Satorialist? Walking, breathing, art, I tell you!

My friend Chelsea asked me to help her go shopping and I was more than happy to pick out dresses upon dresses for her! Last Friday we scoured the racks at Macy*s and Crossroads. Macy*s was a bit of a bust, but I talked her into trying on some white dresses, and even though I originally picked this white lace BeBop dress for her, I had to try it on too!

Not the best example of what the dress looks like since I’m wearing a maroon jacket over it (damn thing was so cute and on sale, but my arms were too fat for it! :(). At Crossroads, Chelsea found some cute nautical things like a seahorse necklace and white & red peep toes. I found a navy purse with seashell charms on it to match both items. Chelsea actually found lots of cute stuff which I didn’t get to take pictures of. Rugh! But, I will be going over to her house sometime to raid her closet and find all sorts of outfits for her. I’m so excited! The last time I did anything like that was when my cousin Nicole was 13 and we took her to Limited Too and my sister and I picked out all sorts of outfits for her to try on. It’s like dressing up Barbie, but for reals!

Saddle up

I’ve been wanting a pair of saddle shoes or oxfords for the past I-don’t-know-how-many-months. I can’t seem to win in this department — I either find a pair that fit, but are too expensive (and don’t seem worth it because they look like they’ll tear my feet apart), or they’re the right price but they don’t have my size or the color that I want. RUGH. Shopping should never be this frustrating!

Even the first pair of saddle shoes I got were a bitch. I was 4 years old and I had been eyeing a pair at Stride Rite for the longest time. I wanted so badly to look like a 50’s girl with a poodle skirt and saddle shoes. I’ve never owned a poodle skirt though, I guess I figured the shoes would come first and then the skirt. Never happened. Anyhow, one day, Auntie Nelly and Papang (my grandpa) took me after school to get a pair. And whaddya know, they didn’t have my size. The woman that worked there gave me a pink & white pair that were a size smaller than mine. It was a really tight fit — I remember my foot was sort of puffing at the top, but I didn’t care. I was determined to leave with new shoes upon my feet. “Does it fit you, sweetie?” she asked. I said it did. Auntie Nelly said it looked too tight. “It’s fine!” I lied protested. So I got my saddle shoes, and though I walked in pain, my 4 year old self knew she was hot shit.

I guess that’s when I became a woman.

By the by, I always wondered what the difference between saddle shoes and oxfords were because they pretty much look the same, right? I did some “research,” and by “research” I mean I typed “difference between oxfords and saddle shoes” into Google, and it said that saddle shoes are plain at the toe while oxfords have designs throughout the entire shoe. So there you go. Cue the “The More You Know” shooting star.

So last week when I went to San Francisco, I found a beautiful pair of patent black & white Bass saddle shoe heels, pictured above. I was really tempted to try them on, but they were $108.95. Just typing the price makes my heart hurt. That’s like 11 hours worth of my paycheck. So then I walked into Bloomingdales for reasons that escape me because the only thing I can truly afford to buy there is one of their reusable brown bags (I think they’re around $4), and then I saw these gorgeous brown saddle shoe/boot hybrid thingies, also by Bass. I immediately started thinking of all the things I could wear with them — my white lace dress with a brown cardigan, a pink dress, a blue dress, basically any dress that’s hanging in my closet. It was on sale for $76 and my mom said I should try them on since the price was pretty decent. Have my first big splurge with my paycheck be on a pair of boots from Bloomies? Why the hell not! I asked one of the workers if I could try the boots and a pair of brown & green saddle shoes on, but alas. They did not have my size in either shoe!

Remember that blog post I put up about how sometimes things just don’t go your way? Yeah, this happened on that day. It was a bad day. At least I still have the internet as an option. <– there’s a silver lining to everything.
