Wookiee Wednesday: You Can’t Sith With Us

On Wednesdays my friend Brianna and I always wear something Star Wars related to work and have dubbed the day “Wookiee Wednesday.” We used to dress up in Star Wars duds on Tuesdays, but since we don’t see each other on Tuesdays this semester anymore, we settled for Wednesdays. Technically, I wore this outfit on Monday, but whatever! And in case you’re wondering, yes, I am wearing something Star Wars related today (my Rescuers/Star Wars mash-up tee by James Hance and some Rebellion earrings!).

I’m going to attempt to bring Wookiee Wednesday to Le Fancy Geek too! Maybe it’ll be an outfit post, or maybe it’ll be a toy review… who knows?! But don’t be surprised if I blog about Star Wars on a day other than Wednesday. It cannot be helped; the Fandom is strong with me.

This Darth Vader pullover was one of my Force Friday finds from when I went to Target at midnight. It’s super cozy and goes with everything! And if you saw last night’s post, you might recognize the Wanderlust + Co bib necklace I get to borrow thanks to Rocksbox. When I first opened up my package from them and saw this necklace, it immediately just made me think of how great it would look with my Darth Vader pullover. Nothing says “Darth Vader” like a fancy sparkly necklace, am I right?

BTW, 71 MORE DAYS UNTIL STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS COMES OUT!!!! Are any of you flipping the hell out too?!

It is seriously an amazing time to be a Star Wars fan right now! And also kind of terrible because all the amazing new merch hasn’t been to kind on my wallet. I mean… I know I don’t NEED to buy all these things, but I’m a terrible shopaholic and have a hard time saying “no.” Although, I am pretty proud of myself for putting down a BB-8 and Captain Phasma watch at Kohl’s last week because I told myself that I really didn’t need them. Baby steps, guys. Baby steps. Or BB-steps? HA! See what I did there. I’m so punny.

La Valse d’Amélie

Bonjour mon petit poneys! I’m pretty sure that’s how you say “hello my little ponies” in French, but I could be wrong*. Over the weekend I was lucky enough to see the Amélie musical at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and it was all kinds of magical. It’s based on the 2001 French film of the same name which I adore completely. Amélie is definitely one of my Top 10 favorite movies and the soundtrack with Yann Tiersen’s score is the beeesssst. Amélie, both the movie and musical, is about a shy young woman with an overactive imagination living in Montmarte who begins a quest to anonymously bring joy to others by returning long lost treasures from childhood’s past or playing cupid to make their lives better, all the while struggling with her own insecurities.

So when I first heard that a musical was in the works I was both excited and skeptical. Excited because I love musicals and the movie, and skeptical because the music is one of the best parts of the movie, so how can they have a musical with original music that doesn’t involve Yann Tiersen?!

All doubt flew out the window though because, like I said, this musical was magical. MAGICAL I SAY! It still had the same spirit as the film, and I thought it translated well to the stage. Samantha Barks, who played Eponine in the film adaptation of Les Miserables, was perfection and Adam Chanler-Berat, who played Nino, had an impressive set of pipes. The whole cast was perfection, really. Berkeley Rep also showed American Idiot before it made its Broadway debut, so I’m really hoping that the Amélie musical follows in the same footsteps because it really deserves all the recognition. And I also really need the soundtrack ASAP. I’m not sure what the song was called, but it was when Nino is just right outside of Amélie’s apartment door asking if he can come in, and she’s basically saying no, but not to leave because she likes him where he is because she’s too scared to let him in — physically into her apartment and emotionally into her little bubble (there were a lot of moments that were too applicable to my own life). But uuuuggghhh… SO GOOD.

le sigh

You know me, I never miss an opportunity to dress in theme wherever I go! I noticed that on the artwork for the show, Amélie is wearing a flowing red skirt and black and white striped top. Those items just so happen to be sitting in my closet too, so I decided to wear it to the show! I also paired it with an amour-o-meter necklace I got at the Lodi Street Faire a few years ago. On one side of the necklace it has different levels of love in French, and on the other in English. I also wore my bunny earrings because in the movie, a young Amélie takes a photo of clouds shaped like a bunny (and there were also bunnies on the wallpaper of the stage at the show… coincidence?). The hair flower clip isn’t very French, but I thought the red and yellow and green color palette matched the film’s original poster.  A few people noticed I dressed like Amélie and complimented my outfit. After the show, Caitlin, myself, and her friend Megan walked over to the theatre’s bar and a woman said, “Great job tonight!” to us because she thought we were in the show. Haha! I’m assuming she had a seat on the upper level because none of us look like any of the actors in the cast, but it was still nice to be mistaken for the talent. 😀

Berkeley Rep has extended Amélie’s run until October 18, so if you find yourself anywhere near the Bay Area and you love Amélie, you MUST go! It’s totally worth it all the monies!

Punch It, Chewie!

Aloha, my little ponies! Hawaii has been pretty damn amazing… except for the millions of mosquito bites I have acquired. Ugh! The mosquitos here can go to hell and die. Other than that, I’ve been having lots of fun with my family! Last weekend I got to attend my cousin Amanda’s wedding to her longtime boyfriend Nick. I’ve never cried or gotten emotional at a wedding, but something about their’s made me ruin my makeup a little bit. I’m so happy for the two of them since this wedding was a long time coming! I jokingly refer to Nick as the big brother I never wanted because he likes to annoy me on purpose and I him. Now all the pressure is on my sister’s boyfriend of nearly 13 years. She even caught the bouquet, so the pressure is even more real. Haha! Sorry, Ryan!

I originally was going to wear this really pretty dress from Heart of Haute with hydrangeas all over it with a black pair of ballet flats, but the weather here has been pouring rain on and off AND it’s also been freakin’ hot and humid. I actually wore this outfit the day before exploring the North Shore and thought it might be better to wear, and it was. –Phew

And you might have noticed that I threw in some Star Wars accessories with this ensemble too. ☺

The teals and blues of the Millennium Falcon belt I got at Hot Topic matched the teal dress I got from the Old Navy outlet in Livermore, and floral things + sci-fi is mah thang, so pairing it with this cover up I originally got to wear poolside was a no-brainer. I didn’t even mean to pack my Chewbacca ring, but I found him in my carryon as I was unpacking at the hotel. If that’s not kismet, I don’t know what is. The Darth Vader purse by Loungefly was also going to be used with the outfit I intended to wear, but it works with this one too! It looks like it’s small, but it actually holds quite a few things! I was able to stuff my lipstick, chapstick, battery charger + chord, little wallet, my phone, and BB-8 Funko and Stitch Tsum Tsum into it. It’s easily become my new favorite accessory!

Now that I think about it, nearly everything I wore to the wedding was purchased at the outlet in Livermore just a few days before I flew to Hawaii. Hooray for last minute shopping!

I head back to California on Thursday, so for now I’m just going to enjoy the rest of my vacation. More blog posts about Hawaii to come sometime after! But you can follow my Hawaiian Holiday on Instagram if you’d like to see what I’m up to. ☺

Everyday Cosplay: Mabel Pines

pullover: Skip N’ Whistle // skirt: Old Navy // shoes: Blowfish Shoes
earrings: ModCloth // friendship bracelets: Icing // purse: LeSportsac

Hey my little ponies! I’ve recently become super obsessed with Gravity Falls — it’s a cartoon on Disney XD about a couple of 12-year old twins, Dipper and Mabel Pines, and the crazy super natural adventures they have while they stay with their great uncle in Gravity Falls, OR during their summer vacation. I’m not sure what took me so long to get on board with this show since it’s been out for a couple of years, but I’m so glad I randomly stumbled upon it. I recognized Kristen Schaal’s voice (Mel from Flight of the Conchords, Trixie from Toy Story 3, and of course Louise from Bob’s Burgers) on the show while I was flipping channels and pretty much became hooked from there. Her character Mabel is my new favorite! She’s so adorable, silly, and extremely confident for a kid who’s in junior high. But another thing I like about Mabel is her style. Her graphic pullover game is on point. With every episode I watched I wondered, “What’s gonna be on Mabel’s sweater this time?” So of course I had to put together an Everyday Cosplay outfit inspired by her!

Mabel’s always wearing a quirky pullover/skirt/ballet flat combo so I picked a few pieces that us ladies way over the age of 12 could get away with. 🙂 I paired the kitty sweater by Skip N’ Whistle with a polkadot bag by LeSportsac because it reminded me of this:

bedazzled
c/o barnorama.com

And can we note the llama she’s rocking? Mabel’s too cute.

Anyhow, I’m going to try and regularly start making little style collages with outfits inspired by my favorite fictional characters. I remember doing one for Lady Mary from Downton Abbey awhile ago, but that’s about it (I think). Do you have any requests for what character I should do next? Let me know in the comments!

Cheers,
Nina

Blogger Night at Old Navy

A few weeks ago I was invited to be part of Blogger Night at Old Navy’s Dublin, CA location where myself and a couple of other bloggers (Courtney of The Curious Commuter and Jesica of Ryzenberg On) were on hand to give style tips to customers and help them pick out outfits. We even got to style our own mannequins which was ridiculous amounts of fun (kind of stressful at first — I’ll digress in a bit)!

I arrived at the store a couple hours before the event to roam around and pick pieces for my mannequin and for my friend Caitlin. I found myself engulfed with anxiety because I was unsure of which direction to go — there were some vintage style Disney tees and I thought, “Do I rep my Disney Dorkness or go with something else?” I picked a Mickey Mouse shirt for Caitlin to try on and held onto it until I eventually found a skirt and cardigan for her to wear with it [pictured below], and ended up basing my mannequin’s outfit around this sweet olive military jacket that reminded me of Clara Oswald from Doctor Who. I was thrilled with the way my mannequin turned out and that I managed to get a geeky element on it. YAY!

My friend Amanda came over too and the three of us kept fangirling about Tom Hiddleston, so I decided I wanted to put Caitlin in a Loki inspired ensemble! At first I was walking around holding a kelly green shirt, but nixed it so I could use the military jacket again — totes appropriate since his fandom is referred to as “Loki’s Army.” I had fun (too much, me thinks) with accessories too. I found a gold necklace with a pointy pendent that was reminiscent to the horns on his helmet. I had layered on another necklace with some feathers — we reasoned that his brother has feathers on his helmet so it still made sense with the Loki theme. 🙂

And lastly, all the bloggers got to style Vivian (the lovely manager that invited me). I kept eyeballing these black and white printed shorts that I would totally wear if I felt comfortable rocking shorts, so I had Vivian put those on with a black cardi, aqua tank, and pastel accessories. I was happy to hear she ended up buying the shorts and top at the end of the day!

I had soooo much fun throwing these outfits together and meeting Courtney and Jesica. Hopefully I’ll be able to come back for the next Blogger Night and I hope to see some of you there too!

LeSportsac: It’s a Small World Bag Review

I’ve been holding out on some exciting news from you guys, but I’m ready to share it!

A couple of weeks ago the fine folks of LeSportsac contacted me and asked me if I could write a review AND host a giveaway on my blog for their spring line of It’s a Small World bags! When I first found out about this collaboration last year I flipped out because I’ve been a longtime fan of both Disney and LeSportsac (the very first expensive bag I bought myself was from their collaboration with Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. line and my LeSportsac collection snow balled from there!), plus It’s a Small World has always been one of my favorite attractions at Disneyland since I was a little girl. So when I was approached by them to review a couple of bags for this particular line I did a little happy dance around my room! 😀

I’ll be giving more details about the giveaway tomorrow (and one of them will be filled with a bunch of special goodies in honor of my upcoming 2 year blogaversary!), but for now here’s my review of a couple of their super cute bags!

The Classic Hobo is not too big and not too small — it’s just right. <– that was so Goldilocks of me. Anyhow, I was able to stick my wallet, make-up bag, planner, a pack of gum, hand sanitizer, and a Cliff Bar, and there was still a bit of room to spare for a few other little things. This is the perfect kind of bag to take on the go — whether you’re hanging out with some friends, going to a concert, running errands, or heading to work. And I love the fact that you can adjust the strap, so you can wear it as a crossbody bag or over the shoulder.

The print of the bag is called “Share Your Dreams” and it features a bunch of little embroidered iconic landmarks from different nations and a charm that has the face from the tower of the attraction. I’m a HUGE fan of Mary Blair, the artist who designed It’s a Small World, and I think that LeSportsac did a lovely job at paying homage to her incredibly adorable iconic designs. It also came with a little pouch that can double as a little makeup bag (but I forgot to take a picture of it. D’oh)!

The other bag I really liked was the Carryall Tote. And true to its name, it really can carry all!

I was able to fit all the items I listed above in the Classic Hobo, along with my bulky Canon SX50 and iPad, and there was definitely room for even more! This tote is ideal for the kind of girl that likes to carry tons of things with her. It can also fit my 13 inch laptop, a water bottle, etc. I think this is the kind of bag I’d take along with me for travel purposes or if I find myself leaving the house to work on my blog elsewhere, that way I can take my camera and laptop with me. It’s also PERFECT for a trip to Disneyland! It’ll hold all the bare necesseties (I’m sorry, that was cheesy) and you can even fit snackies and little souvenirs in case you go shopping in between going on rides and eating Pineapple Dole Whips.

Stay tuned to find out how you can win your very own It’s a Small World purse on tomorrow’s post!

Cheers,
Nina

Barks & Rec.

My fluffy baby Rory is going to be graduating from his beginners class at Petsmart next week! But he has to pass the evaluation test first — meaning he needs to perform all the commands we’ve been teaching him for the past 5 weeks perfectly. No pressure whatsoever. For the most part, Rory’s a good dog, but sometimes he doesn’t like to listen and gets overly excited around other pups. In class he’s known as “the mean one” or “fiesty one” which makes me really sad because he’s so fuggin’ sweet… just not around other dogs. Rory’s also the only boy in the class and the eldest at 15 months (I think the youngest pup in the class is 5 months old). I really should’ve enrolled him early on, but TARDISes (what is the plural for TARDIS?) and time turners don’t exist, so oh well.

Before his class last Thursday, my friends and I took him out to the park for a walk. Or rather, he took Jen for a walk (he doesn’t have that loose-leash walking down quite yet). Fresh air seemed to be all he needed since he did super awesome in class that night!

And since I wore a cute outfit to work that day, we did some OOTD (outfit of the day) shots around the park. But it was soooo windy and the lighting was off pretty much everywhere, I ended doing a few shots at home (full outfit shot is down below).

While trying to get rid of clothes I don’t wear often, I came across this hot air balloon dress by American Rag in my closet that I haven’t worn since my trip to Disneyland in May. I forced myself to make an outfit around it because I didn’t like the thought of not having it in my closet. :/ Both my earrings and necklace are second-hand purchases. I got my teal crystal earrings at the Lodi Street Faire just in time for prom! I was into teal a lot back then. And when I say “back then” I mean 8 years ago. Yikes! I found my necklace at the local flea market last year. It’s a fragrance locket, or perfume necklace. I’m not sure what to call it, but the inside of it contains some nasty scented wax. The gold cigar band ring was given to me by my super stylish grandma (super stylish grandma can be seen here). And my navy and purple cuff is from the Coach outlet store. Yay outlets!

outfit details:

  • dress: American Rag
  • cardigan: Old Navy
  • necklace: flea market find
  • earrings: street market find
  • ring: my grandma gave it to me!
  • bracelet: Coach
  • boots: Madden Girl
  • tights: Hue

I’m assuming there will be Halloween parties this weekend, so I hope you all have fun and be safe (of course)! I dressed up as Minnie Mouse for my co-worker’s costume/going-away party last night, so I shall post pictures of my costume in the upcoming days. And if you’re not doing anything festive this weekend, I hope you have fun as well!

Cheers,
Nina ❤

Get along lil’ doggy

The holiday season has really gotten to me — and by that I mean my waistline. Fuuuuuu… Curse you delicious stupid cookies and cakes that magically appear out of nowhere during this time of year! CURSE YOU. You know I can’t resist you!

I started going back to the gym over the weekend and also started taking Rory out on walks. As a result, I am SO. RIDICULOUSLY. SORE. Oh, and I’m totally drinking some hot chocolate with whipped cream as I write this. Heh…

I remember being really excited of the prospect of having my own puppy to cuddle and take out on walks before I brought Rory home in September. I even contemplated on cancelling my gym membership since I figured walking Rory would be my form of cardio. Um, I was so wrong. When Rory finally came home, I was crushed when I learned that I had to wait until he got his rabies shot to take him anywhere. 4 months — that’s how long I had to wait! In the meantime I tried attaching a leash (one of those retractable ones) on him a couple of times so he could get used to the feel of it, but he ended up chewing it which was all kinds of frustrating. He’s a puppy, so I should’ve seen that coming. *sigh*

Recently, my dad and aunt have been nagging me about taking him out on walks, so I bought regular leash and took him on a short walk to the mail box last week. I expected him to just sit there as I tried to drag him along, but to my pleasant surprise he actually walked with me and by my side (dogs are always supposed to walk by you, not behind or in front of you).

The following day I took Rory out around the neighborhood and he did fairly well. He did bark at a couple of Rottweilers though. x__x

And a few days after that, Tim took us to a trail where him and his sister used to ride their bikes. It was pretty nice, and we found another dog park along the way.

Here are some pictures from that walk:

Another thing that surprised me was when Rory let me put clothes on him and didn’t fight me about it or try to chew them off! I was so crestfallen the first 5 times I tried putting on his grey jacket and other various articles of clothing I had gotten for him and he would just not have it. I was like, “Dammit, I’m going to have one of those dogs that hate clothes!” But alas. He doesn’t! 😀

The Caffeine Predicament

In case you’ve been reading my blog from the beginning, this outfit may look a bit familiar to you (see?). I’m not a celebrity, nor am I “internet famous,” therefore it’s okay to do repeats every now and then. Plus it’s not like it’s the exact same thing — my boots are brand new! I’ve been wanting a pair of Victorian-esque boots and nabbed this pair by Madden Girl at Marshall’s over the weekend — they were on sale and the last pair, AND were my size, AND fit over my calves! If that’s not kismet at it’s finest, then I don’t know what is. Lately I’ve been able to find boots that go over my calves — either my calves are shrinking or designers are being kind to those with voluptuous legs. It’s great, but at the same time not kind on my wallet since I’m a full-fledged boot addict and unemployed. D:

Class was cancelled today so I ran a few errands — my aunt said she’s been getting overcharged on my phone bill because I keep going over data (which is dumb, because I have unlimited data!), so I headed to my phone carrier since I knew Marquis was working today. Once I got there I realized I didn’t have my phone with me. LAME. At least I don’t live too far from the shopping center. Marquis also figured out why my phone hasn’t been able to send text messages to certain people, so yay! I also found out I’m eligible for an upgrade. I shall wait for the iPhone 5 since my Droid X is driving me a bit mad.

Afterwards I wandered around Target, and then bought some bitter spray for Rory at PetSmart so he’ll stop chewing things he’s not supposed to… like my shoes. I’m gonna have to return it though because the little butthead likes the way it tastes. Oi.

My mom has been going on and on about Starbucks’ Salted Caramel Mocha. I finally tried one on my way out of Target and she really wasn’t effing around — that shit is delicious. I wasn’t expecting much, but after the first sip I was like, “Is this the hot, sweet nectar of the gods?”

This gif sums up the way I felt about it after I finished:

But I forgot how much my body disdains coffee and I’m currently feeling a bit lightheaded and nauseous. This totally blows. It’s not fair how I can’t partake in the consumption of coffee. I suppose I could go decaf, but that doesn’t sound too appealing. I guess I’ll just stick with tea. *sigh* Why am I blogging right now? I should be napping or puking something. x___x

/facepalm
