Muggle Struggle

I haven’t been feeling very magical lately. And as you may have noticed, my blog game has been super weak because I haven’t written a damn thing since November 2017. YIKES. I even missed my 7-year blogging anniversary back in April! Who knew being an adult with a full-time job would leave one so restless? Hahahahaha… ::sobbing::

But SDCC is just around the corner, and I’m starting to feel very much like Harry Potter going back to Hogwarts! I get to see my sister, and surround myself with my magical geeky friends once more and I. CAN’T. WAIT.

Plus it’ll be nice to be around witches and wizards who will understand and appreciate my geeky themed outfits! I wore this inconspicuous geeky outfit to work last week (and Sunday because I’m an outfit repeater) and no one could tell I incorporated Harry Potter into it with my “Mischief Managed” tank by Jordandené or my cute pins. 😦

Anyhow, I’ve been feeling the urge to get back into blogging as I’ve been reading TONS of comics. Book reviews are something I’ve wanted to incorporate on Le Fancy Geek, and I know I’ve done a few, but comics are pretty much all I’ve been reading lately, and they’ve helped me become a voracious reader once more. I had a reading goal of 30 books for this year and I’ve already surpassed it because of all the graphic novels I’ve read! And I want to talk about some cool ones I’ve come across because I need to geek out about them!! And with SDCC coming up, there are bound to be endless things I’ll want to share on here!!!

I also have some cute geeky outfit photos I’ve posted on my Instagram account, but not on the blog, so I’ll be sharing those soon!

Tale As Old As Time

outfit details – jacket + flowers: H&M // earrings: Once Upon a Smorgasbord (buy here) // dress: Mossimo (buy here) // belt: Merona // boots: Madden Girl

Last week I FINALLY got to watch the Beauty & the Beast musical in Sacramento! I’ve been wanting to watch it since, oh… I dunno, since it first came out in the 90s? It’s come around my neck of the woods a few times within a 10 year span, but for some reason I’d always miss it. Since my annual pass to Disneyland expired earlier this month, I was in dire need of some Disney magic, so I couldn’t let this pass by once more! I ended up going with Shanice, my mom, her bestie, and my Auntie Clemen. So it was kind of like a mother/daughter + besties + sister/auntie night out! WOO! I really enjoyed it, though I was a bit thrown off by how the Beast came off as “wimpy” and humorous compared to how serious and stoic he is in the movie. But, whatever. I still love that furball either way!

I opted to dress in theme, so I put together an outfit that was inspired by both Belle and the Beast during the “Tale as Old as Time” sequence in the movie with a navy blue military-esque jacket, yellow lace dress, rosey hair clips, and a pair of earrings I made with Belle and the Beast! They’re actually up on my Etsy store, so if you want to check them out you can click here. I really wanted to wear something like this to Dapper Day last month, but I didn’t have a yellow dress that could pass off as Belle’s then, plus the jacket isn’t ideal for sunny SoCal weather. I’d be sweatin’ a storm!

Cheers,
Nina

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

As today would have marked Fred Rogers’ 85th birthday, I think it’s only right for me to do an outfit post dedicated to him as he was one of my childhood favorites and a total fashion inspiration to me. He’s completely responsible for my love of cardigans, I seriously wear one one almost EVERY. DAY. One of my life-long goals was to own just as many cardigans as he did, but I don’t know how many he owned to begin with, so maybe that’s just me wanting to find excuses to keep buying them. Like, I don’t own any awesome zip-up ones like he did anymore. Do they even make those still??? Anyway, I was always fascinated by how in each episode’s intro he’d come into his house while singing “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” while switching from a snazzy blazer to a casual zip-up cardigan and sneakers. So grandpa chic!

Along with being a total style icon (to me and GQ anyway), he was an amazing human being. Here’s a list of fun facts that I found on Tumblr awhile ago about Mister Rogers:

  • He basically saved public television. In 1969 the government wanted to cut public television funds. Mister Rogers then went to Washington where he gave an amazing merely six minute speech. By the end of the speech not only did he charm the hostile Senators, he got them to double the budget they would have initially cut down. The whole thing can be found on youtube, a video called “Mister Rogers defending PBS to the US Senate.”
  • “Certain fundamentalist preachers hated him because, apparently not getting the “kindest man who ever lived” memo, they would ask him to denounce homosexuals. Mr. Rogers’s response? He’d pat the target on the shoulder and say, “God loves you just as you are.” Rogers even belonged to a “More Light” congregation in Pittsburgh, a part of the Presbyterian Church dedicated to welcoming LGBT persons to full participation in the church.”
  • According to a TV Guide piece on him, Fred Rogers drove a plain old Impala for years. One day, however, the car was stolen from the street near the TV station. When Rogers filed a police report, the story was picked up by every newspaper, radio and media outlet around town. Amazingly, within 48 hours the car was left in the exact spot where it was taken from, with an apology on the dashboard. It read, “If we’d known it was yours, we never would have taken it.”
  • Once, on a fancy trip up to a PBS exec’s house, he heard the limo driver was going to wait outside for 2 hours, so he insisted the driver come in and join them (which flustered the host). On the way back, Rogers sat up front, and when he learned that they were passing the driver’s home on the way, he asked if they could stop in to meet his family. According to the driver, it was one of the best nights of his life—the house supposedly lit up when Rogers arrived, and he played jazz piano and bantered with them late into the night. Further, like with the reporters, Rogers sent him notes and kept in touch with the driver for the rest of his life.

Happy Birthday Mister Rogers!!!

Cheers,
Nina

PS: I came across a really lovely article Benjamin Wagner, the director of the documentary Mister Rogers & Me, wrote for Mental_Floss packed with even more facts about the late and absolutely wonderful Mister Rogers. You can read it here.

Da Na Na Na Na Na Na Na BATMAN!

outfit details – dress: Material Girl // cardigan & belt: Merona // earrings: H&M // watch: Disney x Timex // hair bow: upcycled from a broken headband // shoes: Target ballet flats I DIY’d with Batman fabric // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here)

Batman’s been my favorite superhero ever since I was an itty bitty thing. I didn’t necessarily read the comics, but I watched the old campy version with Adam West all the time with my grandpa, and of course I loved the Tim Burton movies that came out when I was around 5, and Batman: The Animated Series was an after-school staple! My sister and I even had hair ribbons and shoe laces adorned with Batman’s emblem — I guess I’ve been doing the geeky-girly thing since I was a little lady. Ha! Anywho, I attempted to do some color blocking and pattern mixing with this outfit by mixing my kelly green lace dress with royal blue and hints of yellow to compliment Batman’s logo on my shoes that I DIY’d myself! I made them in August by using acrylic paint, Mod Podge, and Batman fabric on an old pair of ballet flats that I  found a bit boring. They looked really awesome after they were done and I was extremely happy with the way they turned out, but after wearing them twice the paint and bits of fabric started falling off. NOOO! I still need to figure out how to salvage them. Are there any crafty folks that might be able to give me some sage advice? I did manage to salvage the hair bow I’m wearing though — it was originally on a headband that Jen and Shanice picked up for me in Japan Town, but when I found it behind my vanity it was broken! I ripped the bow off and attached it to a clip and voila — insta-accessory! And the polkadots are kind of comic bookish since the illustrations on some of them, particularly the really old ones, were pretty dotty. 🙂

Cheers,
Nina
