Barks & Rec.

My fluffy baby Rory is going to be graduating from his beginners class at Petsmart next week! But he has to pass the evaluation test first — meaning he needs to perform all the commands we’ve been teaching him for the past 5 weeks perfectly. No pressure whatsoever. For the most part, Rory’s a good dog, but sometimes he doesn’t like to listen and gets overly excited around other pups. In class he’s known as “the mean one” or “fiesty one” which makes me really sad because he’s so fuggin’ sweet… just not around other dogs. Rory’s also the only boy in the class and the eldest at 15 months (I think the youngest pup in the class is 5 months old). I really should’ve enrolled him early on, but TARDISes (what is the plural for TARDIS?) and time turners don’t exist, so oh well.

Before his class last Thursday, my friends and I took him out to the park for a walk. Or rather, he took Jen for a walk (he doesn’t have that loose-leash walking down quite yet). Fresh air seemed to be all he needed since he did super awesome in class that night!

And since I wore a cute outfit to work that day, we did some OOTD (outfit of the day) shots around the park. But it was soooo windy and the lighting was off pretty much everywhere, I ended doing a few shots at home (full outfit shot is down below).

While trying to get rid of clothes I don’t wear often, I came across this hot air balloon dress by American Rag in my closet that I haven’t worn since my trip to Disneyland in May. I forced myself to make an outfit around it because I didn’t like the thought of not having it in my closet. :/ Both my earrings and necklace are second-hand purchases. I got my teal crystal earrings at the Lodi Street Faire just in time for prom! I was into teal a lot back then. And when I say “back then” I mean 8 years ago. Yikes! I found my necklace at the local flea market last year. It’s a fragrance locket, or perfume necklace. I’m not sure what to call it, but the inside of it contains some nasty scented wax. The gold cigar band ring was given to me by my super stylish grandma (super stylish grandma can be seen here). And my navy and purple cuff is from the Coach outlet store. Yay outlets!

I’m assuming there will be Halloween parties this weekend, so I hope you all have fun and be safe (of course)! I dressed up as Minnie Mouse for my co-worker’s costume/going-away party last night, so I shall post pictures of my costume in the upcoming days. And if you’re not doing anything festive this weekend, I hope you have fun as well!

Cheers,
Nina ❤

DIY Binge

When I was little, my Auntie Nelly brought home a box of beads from a craft store for my sister and I to make stuff with. I made a tiny wreath with pink plastic beads and silver roses, and I think I even added some teal and purple beads in there too (what did I know?!). And for my 9th birthday I got a super rad Pocahontas jewelry making kit! When I went to school with my new creations, some of the girls in my class asked me to make them stuff — even the ones that bullied me. The nerve, right?! I made one of them earrings anyway to make her leave me alone. That worked out in my favor. 😀

Making jewelry has always been a hobby of mine. In the last few years I’ve made necklaces with the intention of selling them, but I always found myself becoming attached to them, so I just kept them for myself. In short, I have never sold any of my creations. x___x

It’s been awhile since I’ve made anything, but this week I managed to crank out a few items! When I got my bosun whistle last weekend, I also bought a few loose pendants, one of them was a gold teddy bear that opens up and contains some waxy smelly granny perfume. I must get rid of that stuff! Anyway, I took a gold chain necklace I’ve had for years and made an uber fancy one with the bear pendant and a few other baubles (pictured above). Here’s a close-up of the teddy bear:

Sorry, the macro on my camera is a bit meh.

I’m trying not to get too attached to this piece, but it’s kind of hard because I really like the way it turned out, and I totally slaved away in the garage (which is hotter than Satan’s bumhole) for HOURS until I finally felt that it looked right. RUGH.

Anywho, I made a few other things this week too (I apologize for the craptastic quality of the following pictures):

Mozart pendant made out of chandelier crystal/teardrop crystal pendant. Whatever you wanna call it. Last year when Auntie Nelly went to Austria she brought back some chocolate with this Mozart design and I kept them because I thought, “Hey, I can do something with this someday.” And voila! I plan on adding a brass chain a some Swarovski baubles to it. I shall post the finished product here when it’s… well, done.

White Rabbit chandelier crystal pendant attached to brass necklace chain. I made the pendant last March out of boredom but could never find the right chain to go with it. I finally found one last week and I’m uber happy with the way it turned out. The White Rabbit image came from one of my tear-away desk calendars.

I made these earrings with these plastic pendants I found in a some randomly put together packets at some bead store in Berkeley (can’t remember the name of it though). I wanted to add little crystals beads to dangle at the bottom, but I think they look fine the way they are. I have a yellow pendant like this too, but since there’s only one I’m gonna have to settle on just making a necklace with it.

It’s nice to have this sort of creative outlet as writing stories is at a bit of a standstill for me. However, I recently came up with an idea for a zombie story and have been jotting down notes and doing a bit of research (I’m really not into zombies, but this idea came out of nowhere and I felt the need to run with it) so hopefully that’ll eventually come along. Plus Tim and I made a *high five promise — he has to write more songs, and I have to write more stories. I’m just having a hard time trying to figure out the direction I want to go in for the story — third person, first person, serious or campy, etc. AH! I think it’s time for me to bust out my old Creative Writing class’ writing exercises.

*high five promise is the new pinky swear.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Last night I got to watch the Mary Poppins musical in Sacramento! Mary Poppins is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies. I adore Julie Andrews (who doesn’t?). I seriously wish she was my grandmother.

I’ve been wanting to watch this show ever since I got word that it was being developed a few years back, and while I did enjoy it, I have to say I definitely prefer the film version. The musical was a bit more serious than I thought it would be. I took a theatre appreciation class once and the professor said that the show dealt with a lot of family dynamics. In the musical, the children were snobby (particularly Jane), the dad was way more uptight, and the mom wasn’t all sister-suffragette-like. The changes that were made totally made sense for the stage adaptation though. There’s no way they could’ve recreated the “Jolly Holiday” scene for the stage. And it still had that bit of Disney magic, so all was well in the end. Plus, I got a Mary Poppins umbrella! The parrot’s head is kinda heavy, but I am going to look so fancy during the rainy season, I don’t even care.

For my outfit that day, I decided to be a bit of a dork and base it around Mary’s blue and red color scheme. I think I kinda ended up looking a bit like Molly from the American Girl series though, which isn’t too bad since she was my favorite anyway! 😀
