Fantastic Pups and Where To Find Them

Today is National Dog Day, and also Women’s Equality Day!

But we’re here to talk about dog stuff because I’m a crazy dog lady dog mama. Obviously. ;P

Rory’s accumulated a few cool items here and there over the past few months, but the two things I’m currently obsessed with are his brand new harness and dog carrier by Yap USA. I’ve been in search of a nice carrier for him since the one I got couple years ago is so bulky and… well, ugly. The main reason I got it was so I could bring him on BART with me whenever I felt like going San Francisco (which wasn’t all that often), and also for family outings. But walking around with it was a nuisance. It felt like I was going around town with a duffle bag.

When I went to SF last month (which you can read about here) we stumbled upon Yap USA in Ghirardelli Square. They had so many cute and stylish things for fur babies; it’s basically Nordstrom for canines! I thought the harness Rory had was fine, but my aunt wanted to get him a new one. So the salesman (who was very helpful and super cute) showed us their “Yap Wrap,” which I thought was weird upon first glance, but then he explained the design and it all made more sense — it’s reversible (Rory’s is plain denim on one side, striped on the other), has sturdy military grade velcro, a d-ring is attached at the bottom rather than top to prevent trachea damage, and there’s a handle down the back in case you need to pull your pup away from something. I feel like I explained this so much better in the vlog I recorded that needs to be redone since it turned out weird. Blugh.

But the carrier! Let’s talk about that, shall we? The carrier I found at Yap USA is the best thing ever. It’s not bulky, it has lots of pockets to place Rory’s treats and a few of my things, and is stylish as f*ck. I’ve already used it numerous times since we got it last month — mainly for Rory, but sometimes just for me. No, seriously. I legit use this thing as a purse. It’s fantastic! When I went to the Mission district and Berkeley with Jen and Rory a couple weeks ago, I just threw Rory’s little bag of food in the main compartment, and my wallet, lipstick, compact mirror, and portable charger in the carrier’s back pocket, and was set for the whole day. It was funny bringing him into Top Dog (one of my favorite food spots in Berkeley) because he kept fidgeting around in it; it made me feel like Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

I’m going to do my best to re-record/edit my haul video showing off some of Rory’s things soon, that way you guys can get a better look at the carrier and harness, so stay tuned for that! If you take a look at their webstore, you won’t see the carrier I got there. However, I do believe that you can call or email the store and place an order. Just ask about the carrier from their Prada collection. In the meantime, have a happy Friday 😀

5 Fandom Friday: 5 Fandom Tattoos I Have/Want

5fandomfriday-1 copy

It’s been a really long time since I’ve participated in 5 Fandom Friday, but today’s prompt was a fun one that I couldn’t pass up. It’s about fandom tattoos, which is something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately (number 3 on my list in particular). But alas. Tattoos are effing expensive, so I need to put my ink dreams to the side for “adulting” things.

1. Jingles from Disneyland’s King Arthur’s Carrousel

This is my one and only tattoo so far, and I like to call it my obscure hipster Disney tattoo because it’s pretty inconpicuous. It was designed and tattoed by Jen Lee at Tattoo City in San Francisco. I’ve always had a love of all things equine and Disney, and the first piece of writing I ever had published involved carousels, so it made sense to get Jingles, the lead horse on King Arthur’s Carrousel, as my first tattoo.

2. A portrait of Rory

Not quite a fandom tattoo as Rory is my dog furry baby, but I love him so much! His name came from Doctor Who anyway, so I guess it’s fandom-y enough.

3. Hufflepuff badger with a fancy Deathly Hallow

I really, really, really want a tattoo dedicated to my Hufflepuff pride! Ever since I came across a badger tattoo done by Kiki Burghardt on Instagram, I knew that she was the one that had to do it. I already have a good idea of what I want it to look like too; I want it to be surrounded by leaves (kinda like the design above by Veronica Guzzardi) and yellow flowers, and somehow have the Deathly Hallows be incorporated. I’m unable to locate the picture of the badger tattoo I originally saw by her, but you guys should totally check out her Instagram! I want the Deathly Hallows part to be detailed with filigree or something like that. I found a picture on Pinterest a few years ago that would be perfect! But I want mine to be different because I don’t want to straight up copy the person who already has the tattoo.

(Deathly Hallows tattoo found here)

4. “Make Good Art” in Gallifreyan

My friends and I have talked about getting BFF tattoos in Gallifreyan for a few years. At first it was something me and my ex talked about before we started dating. It was brought up again when I got my Jingles tattoo, and my friends said, “F*ck him. We can all get Gallifreyan BFF tattoos instead!” All of ours would have different sayings that means something to us, but the fact that it’s Gallifreyan will help keep in theme with the BFF-yness of it all. I want mine to say “Make good art” which is something Neil Gaiman said in a very inspiration commencement speech about 3 years ago. It’ll be a constant reminder for me to stay creative and make good art, whether it be writing or jewelry making. I found this particular design here.

5. BB-8/R2-D2

After watching The Force Awakens, I couldn’t get the thought of getting BB-8 and R2 tats on my calves! At first I thought about getting them as tattoos on either thigh, but then decided calves would be a better location. How cute would that be?! Star Wars is one of my beloved fandoms and I’ve been trying to think of what character I would want as a tattoo. I’m a Dark Side girl, but I wasn’t really crazy about the idea of a Darth Vader tattoo. I thought about a Storm Trooper in Elizabethan era garb or in Victorian era fashion. But the droids are just so damn cute! I came across this art print of BB-8 by Michelle Coffee and would want it to look something like it.

Do you have any fandom tattoos or are thinking about getting one? Let’s talk about it in the comments section! 😀

Nerdy 30 Birthday Wish List

nerdy geeky birthday wish list star wars her universe funko harry potter

Star Wars leggings | Star Wars: Aftermath | The Force Awakens novelization
Admiral Ackbar pin | Dumbledore Funko Pop! figure | Hufflepuff HP book set
Spider-Gwen v.0 | Ms. Marvel v.4 | Silk v.0 | Her Universe Loki pullover

My 30th birthday is in 2 days! AAAHHHH!!! Some people call it the “dirty 30.” Others call it the “flirty 30.” Since I am neither (well, maybe more dirty than flirty regarding my sense of humor), I am calling this birthday my “nerdy 30” because it makes so much more sense. And I’ll be at Disneyland to celebrate, because what better place to kick off 30th anniversary of life? 🙂

I threw a little birthday wish list together and as you can see, all I want are Star Wars, Marvel, and Harry Potter things (mainly books)! I’m not expecting to get any of these things, but y’know… it’s just a wish list.

Who else has a birthday in January that’s coming up or has passed? Lemme know what’s on your wish list or what you’ve gotten for your birthday in the comments section!

I Solemnly Swear That I Am Up to No Good

I’ve been feeling quite nostalgic over Harry Potter lately, especially since Hot Topic started coming out with all these amazing HP accessories and dresses! Since us Potterheads have awhile to wait the for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie to be released, and also for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to open at Universal Studios in Hollywood, CA (both are supposedly slated for 2016, which feels VERY far away — also, some of us west coasters don’t have the money or desire to make the trek to Florida to visit the WWHP there… it’s so bloody hot and humid!), this, to me, feels like a way to hold me over until then. I’m also planning on re-visiting the book series since it’s been too long since I last read them. Right now I’m reading The Tales of Beedle the Bard for funsies.

I saw this Marauder’s Map dress at Hot Topic last month and wanted to cry over both how beautiful it was and also for the fact that the store I saw it in didn’t have it in my size. Then I went online and it was sold out in my size too, nor did the store in my town have it. First World Problems, right? Ugh! But, the the sale associate looked it up and there were two left at the store in Modesto (hometown of George Lucas and Jeremy Renner), so I had them put it on hold and made the 45 minute trek to pick it up. The things we do for material items sometimes, y’know? It was totally worth the drive though! I paired the dress with my mustard yellow cardigan that I found at a thrift store to rep my Hufflepuffness, and borrowed my mom’s Kate Spade owl purse because how perfect does it look with this dress? Harry Potter and owls just makes sense… like peanut butter and jelly, or Tonks and Lupin. The Harry Potter necklace I made goes perfectly with it too. 🙂

How’re my fellow Potterheads holding up?

Cheers,
Nina

Huff ‘n Puff

Over the weekend I found out that Pottermore is FINALLY open to the public! I was horrendously forlorn when they were accepting some people to be beta testers and whatnot last year and I never received an early acceptance letter to be part of it, while damn near everyone I followed on Tumblr blogged about how they got their letters to Pottermore and how amazingly spectacular it was. sigh

But now, at long last,  I get to experience it! And when you sign up, you’re listed as someone who is “magical.” It’s rather exciting. I was so excited I made a screencap. Now I have proof that shows I am not a Muggle. 😀

In case you’re out of the loop, Pottermore is an online interactive experience that allows you to dive into the world of the Harry Potter series book by book, and it includes new content from J.K. Rowling as you go through each chapter — it gives fans a more in depth look into characters, places, and things like the backstory of Petunia and Vernon Dursley, the meaning behind the name of their house number and neighborhood, etc. But the super big deal is that you can now officially find out what house in Hogwarts you actually belong to. And once you’re sorted you can “duel” other people, and earn house points!

I figured I would either be sorted into Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. Every other online quiz devoted to determining what Hogwarts house you belong to that I have taken have placed me in both of those houses. As I took the quiz, I kept thinking to myself, “Not Hufflepuff, not Hufflepuff” kind of like Harry did when he was getting sorted and he kept thinking, “Not Slytherin, not Slytherin.” But you know what? I didn’t have a freakin’ Sorting Hat on my head, so he couldn’t get into my thought process or anything. Plus every time I answered a question on the Sorting Hat quiz, I thought, “Goddamn, that is such a Hufflepuff answer.” I didn’t want to lie and mark answers that I thought would get me into a certain house, so I did what Pottermore told me to do: answer honestly.

When I got sorted into Hufflepuff, I’ll admit I was less than pleased. I literally screamed, “NOOOOOOO!!!” Tim had texted me earlier and said he was sorted into Ravenclaw. So we’re like Cho Chang and Cedric Diggory — and interracial Ravenpuff couple (but Cedric dies! He gets murdered by Voldemort! RUGH!) <– if you think that’s a spoiler, you are soooo behind.

I suppose nothing is wrong with Hufflepuff, but among the HP fandom, it’s basically the “loser” house. I wanted to be in Ravenclaw because they’re all about intelligence, knowledge and wit. I love reading, writing, and arty things so I thought it kind of went with the Ravenclaw aesthetic. Slytherin is all about being cunning, resourceful, and ambitious — those values are nice and all, but everyone in that house is an arse. Gryffindor values courage, nerve, and chivalry (I hate scary movies and am a very anxious person, so no). And Hufflepuff’s all about hard work, loyalty, patience, and fair play. Yeah, these are nice values, but Ravenclaw… RAVENCLAW. Ugh.

After I calmed down a bit, I read the Hufflepuff bit that showed up and it talked about the house and its colors and mascot, the badger, who is a quiet creature but when messed with can be quite ferocious — it can even attack a wolf! And I thought, “Whoa, I’m totes a badger.” Like a badger (not the Honey Badger, a regular badger), I can be all cute and fluffy, but you seriously don’t want to ‘eff with me because, like the Honey Badger, I don’t give a sh!t (refer to this). Just this morning I started a new shift at work. A student I was working with was completely behind in their assignments and was basically b.s.-ing the whole time they were there. They kind of got a bit smart with me and I just said, “You can either smart mouth me or do your work.” They got pretty butthurt about it, but just because I’m a young tutor doesn’t mean you can get away with being a jerk. Not on my watch! After class I overheard them talking smack about me. I said, “Do you want to say that to my face?” Yeah. I can get pretty ballsy when someone pisses me off.

Hufflepuffs are said to be calm and collected, but know when to strike. Perhaps I am in the right house. Plus, I’d like to think that Liz Lemon would totally be in Hufflepuff since their common room is right by the kitchen (night cheese!).

Are you on Pottermore? What house were sorted in, and do you think it suits you well? Also, you can find me on there as PurpleLeviosa18331. <– yes, that’s an invitation to add me on there (if you like, no pressure yo).
