A Wish List For My Birthday

birthday wish list 2015

R2-D2 suitcase // Keiko Bonlook glasses
The Little Prince pullover // Duffy Bear purse // Totoro dress
Hansel & Gretel by Neil Gaiman //Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley

Hey my little ponies! My birthday is on everyone’s least favorite day of the week: Monday. But I have the day off, so it won’t be so dreadful (at least I hope it won’t)! A few of my friends and I are going to dress up and head to San Francisco to have tea at a cute little tea shop to celebrate. I’m super excited!

I threw this little wish list together for funsies, I’m not expecting to get any of these things from my friends or family. In fact, I’m probably going to buy myself that Totoro dress by Her Universe if it’s still in stock at Hot Topic when my Hot Cash becomes active. Hopefully they’ll still have my size in stock! I’ve been waiting for this dress to come out ever since I saw pictures of it at Her Universe’s fashion show at San Diego Comic-Con. 🙂

What’s on your wish list?

cheers

Tsum Tsum Day My Prince Will Come

When my sister and I went to Disneyland for a second round a couple weeks ago, I decided to do a little Snow White Disneybound since I packed this outfit (the dress was actually in an outfit post last year). It’s not a completely obvious bound, or maybe it’s more of an “inspired-by” outfit… but whatever. I like it! I borrowed my sister’s red bow headband (which she got for her Hipster Snow White costume last year), and brought my little Snow White Tsum Tsum (pictured below). Isn’t she darling?! I had been searching high and low for these damn little Tsum Tsums since they were released during the summer, and my mom surprised me with this cute Snow White one. Fun fact: She had no idea Snow White was my favorite. She just picked her on a whim. I started off with a medium sized Minnie that I got back in August, and then I got Daisy a few days after my mom gave me Snow White — after my trip I added 8 more Tsum Tsums to my collection, and I still want more!

In case you’re scratching your head and wondering what the hell a Tsum Tsum is, let me tell you! They’re these SUPER KAWAII stackable plushies that were first released in Japan (go figure, Japan is like the capital of all things adorable), and they come in three sizes: large, medium, and mini. And of course, there’s also a really fun and addicting Tsum Tsum game that you can download on your iPhone/iPad or Android by Line!

I’ve seen that some of my Instagram buddies are playing/collecting Tsum Tsums too! What about you ponies? Have you started a tiny army of adorbleness too?

Cheers,
Nina

PS: I feel like my Snow White game is on point in this selfie I took the day after my Disneyland trip…

Burdened With Glorious Purpose

outfit details – dress: Annabelle // belt: Xhileration // shoes: Cityclassified // glasses: Derek Cardigan // tote: Gama-Go // Lego Loki necklace: made by me

Hello again, my little ponies!

So I put together this Loki-inspired outfit for day two of mine and Tim’s SoCal getaway. This would’ve been perfect to wear to Disneyland if they had opened up their “Treasures of Asgard” experience while we were there. I could’ve taken a picture with Thor and then demanded that he kneel before me. How could he refuse? I mean, look at how fierce my shoes are! Actually, those shoes would’ve totally been the death of my feet if I wore them to the park. Eek!

Anyhow, our day mostly consisted of shopping at Company D, which is basically like Costco for Disney employees and heaven and hell on earth for me (so amazing, yet so dangerous for my wallet with all the Disneyland merchandise for half off!), and Downtown Disney, and driving to San Diego (boo, traffic). Since I knew we wouldn’t be on our feet the whole day, I opted to wear shoes that aren’t too comfortable for long durations of time, but damn cute! I found them at TJ Maxx a month ago and was naturally drawn to them because they reminded me of the god of mischief. And my green dress with the slanted blocked stripes was found at Ross. Yes, that reminded me of Loki too. With both items I remember seeing them in the store and leaving empty handed, and completely regretting my decision to not buy them. Don’t you hate it when that happens? Luckily, I ended up with both of them!

I made the Lego Loki necklace for myself the day before we left out of a keychain I got from a Lego store last year. It’s not the most functional thing I’ve ever made — he tends to like flipping with his backside out since the horns on his helmet protrude quite a bit. Oh well. I still think it’s quite charming.

My Gama-Go tote was purchased at Comic-Con a few years ago. Isn’t it neat? It’s supposed to look like an x-ray of what bags look like when they’re put through the conveyer belts at airports. I wouldn’t ever bring this on a flight though — something tells me TSA wouldn’t appreciate it. x__x

And look at who I found at the Lego Store in Downtown Disney! HULK GO SMASH. He wasn’t too happy with my ensemble’s inspiration. Sorry I’m not sorry, Hulky!

Cheers,
Nina

The Great CATSby

outfit details – glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here) // pullover: Out of Print Clothing (buy here)

Hello, Old Sports!

With the recent release of the film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, I wanted to re-read the novel before seeing the movie… ’cause that’s how I roll. My expectations aren’t too high for it though; I already have a feeling that it’s going to be one of those the-book-is-better-than-the-movie kind of deals. And Christina Hendricks should’ve totally been cast as Myrtle Wilson, am I right?! I mean, Isla Fisher is gorgeous, but Myrtle’s described as having a bit more of a figure. Plus Christina Hendricks and Carey Mulligan are my lady loves, so it would’ve been mind blowing to see them in a movie together! Anyhow, I found my old copy from high school with notes dated from May of 2002 (#hellaold!) hidden within the pages, but both of my part time jobs have kept me busy and so has my Etsy store, so I haven’t really found a whole lot of time to sit down and read. RUGH. But thankfully audiobooks exist ! I just bought the version Jake Gyllenhaal narrates on Audible (it’s $6.95!!!), and I’m listening to it as I type this very blog post!

The glasses I’m wearing might look familiar — I put them on my “Wishful Wednesdays” post awhile ago. I bought them immediately after I wrote the post too. Waste time I do not! The frames are a lot smaller than I’m used to, but I really like them. I’ve always wanted to try out cat eye frames too. And just like my first order from Coastal.com, the glasses came in a nice case and also came with a bottle of glasses cleaner, a cloth to wipe them with, and a screwdriver to tighten/loosen the glasses. I was a little freaked out when I first put them on though because they were really narrow and had the sides of my face in a tight bear hug. I thought, “OMG, NOOO! I don’t want to have to return these!” And then I remembered that I could go to LensCrafters and have them adjust the glasses for me, and for free nonetheless. Crisis averted! I’m over the moon about these glasses, and I loooove the fact that they have semicolons and colons on them. It’s a subtle detail, but as someone who majored in Creative Writing I can’t help but be super excited about it. Haha! If you haven’t checked out Coastal.com, they have smorgasbord of fantastically wonderful frames and first-time customers get their first pair of glasses for free. Well, you pay for shipping, but other than that they’re FREE!

And don’t my new glasses look just dandy with my The Great Gatsby pullover?  😉

Cheers,
Nina

Da Na Na Na Na Na Na Na BATMAN!

outfit details – dress: Material Girl // cardigan & belt: Merona // earrings: H&M // watch: Disney x Timex // hair bow: upcycled from a broken headband // shoes: Target ballet flats I DIY’d with Batman fabric // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here)

Batman’s been my favorite superhero ever since I was an itty bitty thing. I didn’t necessarily read the comics, but I watched the old campy version with Adam West all the time with my grandpa, and of course I loved the Tim Burton movies that came out when I was around 5, and Batman: The Animated Series was an after-school staple! My sister and I even had hair ribbons and shoe laces adorned with Batman’s emblem — I guess I’ve been doing the geeky-girly thing since I was a little lady. Ha! Anywho, I attempted to do some color blocking and pattern mixing with this outfit by mixing my kelly green lace dress with royal blue and hints of yellow to compliment Batman’s logo on my shoes that I DIY’d myself! I made them in August by using acrylic paint, Mod Podge, and Batman fabric on an old pair of ballet flats that I  found a bit boring. They looked really awesome after they were done and I was extremely happy with the way they turned out, but after wearing them twice the paint and bits of fabric started falling off. NOOO! I still need to figure out how to salvage them. Are there any crafty folks that might be able to give me some sage advice? I did manage to salvage the hair bow I’m wearing though — it was originally on a headband that Jen and Shanice picked up for me in Japan Town, but when I found it behind my vanity it was broken! I ripped the bow off and attached it to a clip and voila — insta-accessory! And the polkadots are kind of comic bookish since the illustrations on some of them, particularly the really old ones, were pretty dotty. 🙂

Nina

Happy Turkey Day!

Happy Thanksgiving (to all of you who celebrate it)!!! If not, Happy Thursday!!!

Tim and I managed to get through the terrible holiday traffic in LA on our way back home from Disneyland yesterday (we were stuck in LA for 3 hours!). So we spent most of our actual one year anniversary in a car. Super romantic, right? Tim was a trooper and drove the whole way while I kept bobbing in and out of sleep. 😦

I’ll post some pictures from our trip in a future blog post. For now, here are a couple of outfit shots from the day we decided to dress up fancy! The pictures were taken somewhere in the Hollywood Backlot area of California Adventure. I didn’t even have to put an outfit together for Tim — he’s just naturally dapper like that. I’m so proud! 🙂

Anyhow, I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and I just want to say I’m super thankful for my family for being awesome and very supportive, to my friends for being great confidants and fun people to be around and have great adventures with, my baby Rory for being the bestest dog EVER, and to my boyfriend Tim — thank you for encouraging me in all my artistic endeavors, for supporting me in all ways possible, and for walking downstairs with me to the vending machines at the Days Inn at 4 in the morning so I could get water for my heartburn/stomachache and for offering to drive around the corner to buy me some Peptobismol despite the fact that you’d have to drive 10 hours back home from Disneyland the following afternoon. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! And Happy One Year Anniversary!

I hope you all get to spend Thanksgiving with amazing people and eat delicious om noms!!!

Cheers,
Nina

The Best Things In Life Are [Kind of] Free

While scrolling through Reddit a few months ago, I came across a promotional ad from Coastal that offered a pair of FREE glasses. That’s right, I said FREE! And they did my prescription for free too (probably because it’s a very light Rx).

I was skeptical at first, but other Redditors and bloggers said it was a legit offer and all you need to do is pay for shipping and handling & insurance. I didn’t get around to claiming that offer then since it expired before I had a chance to look at all the face candy. But as luck would have it, I saw the ad on Reddit again last month and told myself I wouldn’t miss out! I checked out all the wayfarers they had to offer because that’s my favorite style (in case you couldn’t tell from past posts). I know wayfarers are considered “hipster” but what isn’t these days?

After about 2 hours of decision making (yes, it took me that long to decide) I picked out a pair of Derek Cardigan glasses (style 7008 in ‘Smoke’). They’re a translucent shade of grey (1/50 shades <– horrible joke), and they have these cute multiplication and division signs on either side, as well as equal signs on the stems. I’m horrible at math, I absolutely hate it, so it’s like I literally have a contradiction on my face when I wear them. And the fact that I’m Asian and am stereotypically supposed to rock at it is somewhat sad. But it’s okay, I still love them!

Unfortunately, it took FOREVER for them to get here. I know it’s not Coastal’s fault (I blame the FDA  for holding all the FedEx packages ransom in Memphis), but don’t you hate when you order something and it doesn’t come right away? I love getting packages, even if I know what’s in them. It’s like opening a present on Christmas! Coastal saw that my glasses were taking FOREVER to get to me, so they re-sent them and I finally got them on Monday!!!

Coastal also sends their customers glasses in a nice case with eye glass cleaner, a wipey-thingy, and a little screwdriver to tighten and loosen glasses as you please. My optometrist has NEVER hooked me up like this. And instead of paying $106, I spent grand total of $17.38. Saaaa-weeeeeet! I think it was totally worth the wait. 🙂

If you would like to get your own free pair of glasses at Coastal, use the code FIRSTPAIRFREE at the checkout. There’s no expiration date listed, but you should get on this offer ASAP anyway! They also have a promotion to get two pair of glasses for $89 + free shipping with the code 2FOR89. I’d be all over that but 1. I’m poor and 2. all the money on my next paycheck is going to Disneyland. *le sigh*

As you can see, I’m ridiculously ecstatic about my new glasses! And if you know me, you know I have a tendency to misplace my glasses all the fuggin time, so having a spare pair is like the greatest thing ever. Anyhow, I tried to get Rory to take pictures with me for this post, but he was NOT having it. He’s such a bumhole sometimes. I managed to get ONE decent shot though.

Cheers,
Nina

Four Eyes

Having a jolly good time at the park in my faux glasses. I don't recall what was so funny.

When I was in 3rd grade, I tried my best to make it seem like I couldn’t see very well when I went to my first optometrist appointment.

“Can you read this line?” the doctor asked.

I don’t recall what letters and numbers were up on the wall, but I could see them clearly and was really peeved by my super amazing vision. So I just pretended it was all too problematic for me.

“Um… A… L…. H, K… uh… I think that’s a U…” and so on and so forth.

I should have probably said, “I can’t tell what that one is” or just say another letter in its place. But at the end of my appointment, the doctor said I had 20/20 vision and didn’t need glasses. I was crushed. I wanted to wear glasses sooooo badly! I know it sounds sort of odd, like what kid wants to wear glasses? What an effin’ weirdo! But I’ve always thought glasses were cool — my mom has always worn glasses, therefore I thought they were cool. The fact that I didn’t need to wear glasses didn’t necessarily mean I couldn’t wear glasses, so I got a fake pair from Claire’s. And in high school I wore some fake Calvin Klein ones my mom bought at the flea market. They made me feel so chic. 🙂

I got my first pair of prescription glasses when I was 18. And my eyes were SUPER effed up thanks to staring at the computer screen for long periods of time — one eye was farsighted while the other was nearsighted. How does that even happen? But within a year my vision improved, and since then I’ve only had a light reading prescription. I’ve had friends try on my glasses and ask if they’re fake, but I swear they’re not!

Anywho, I picked out a pair of new ones a few weeks ago and I’m all excited! My last pair of glasses have been MIA since February and I’ve had them for 3 years, but my eyeballs have been doing alright. I tend to wear a faux pair of horn rimmed glasses (the kind I originally wanted 3 years ago, but the woman helping me out with glasses said they were too big for my face, and a year later every woman and their mother were wearing them. Thanks, hipsters! /sarcasm) that have made many appearances on my blog. When I was still at SFSU, I heard this one girl ask why people wear fake glasses when they don’t even need a prescription. I was slightly offended as I was wearing my fake glasses as she was saying that, and also I like having something on my face. I feel weird without glasses, even though I don’t need them as much as others might.

I’m rambling. What was the point of this post? Oh yeah, new glasses! So, I picked out tortoise shell colored frames by Brooks Brothers which look pretty similar to my faux ones. I was all excited, but then I got a message from my doctor’s office asking what color I wanted them in. WHAT DO YOU MEAN, WHAT COLOR? I thought it just comes in tortoise. But no. It also comes in olive and black. I took black out of the equation (I hope that doesn’t sound racist) and found myself being torn between olive and tortoise.

WHICH ONE DO I WANT?

Tortoise...
... or olive?

They both don’t look too different from one another, so making a decision became even more difficult! I called the optometrist earlier this morning, but the woman who helped me was with a patient at the time so I thought, “Awesome, more time to think!!!” I settled on tortoise, but when she called me back I said olive. I don’t know what happened.

Either pair should be fine, plus the olive pair look sort of forest-y and have a golden hue, which looks pretty nice… I think. o,0
