You’re Just As Sane As I Am

I found this post just hanging out and collecting figurative dust in my drafts. It’s too cute to not share though! If you know me, you know I love getting dressed in theme when I go places or for certain days. I wore this outfit on September 1st aka Back to Hogwarts Day! Since it’s a Luna Lovegood outfit, why not post this on her birthday? 🙂

I’m a Hufflepuff through and through, but I’d like to think that Luna would be one of my best friends if I went to Hogwarts. We’d hangout and read the Quibbler together and I’d listen to her talk about nargles and other weird things, and we’d have fun craft sessions (making cool jewelry and papier-mĂąchĂ© headpieces for quidditch games).

Both my Luna skirt and beret are from 1138 Clothing, a super cute geek small biz owned and run by my girl Linda. Linda sews all the dresses, skirts, and tops for 1138 Clothing and will even customize pieces to fit your exact measurements. The silhouettes/style of her garments have a retro/vintage feel with a geek twist as she uses fabrics adorned with characters from all kinds of fandoms — from Harry Potter to Disney to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — there’s something for every geek!

New Year, Who Dis?

Welp, 2018 has come and gone and it was filled with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, but I made it out alive (had my first bought of food poisoning the day before New Year’s Eve and wanted to die, but I’m here) so… yay?

I wrote a blog post last July saying I wanted to be better at writing on here, and after that I did a whopping 3 posts. ::cue sad trombone:: I’m gonna cut myself some slack though! On that note, I’ll try and be better this year. I feel like I did a lot of cool things in 2018 (went to Portland and checked out the Laika exhibit, went on my first business trip to NYC, read sooo many awesome comics, modeled in the Her Universe Fashion Show, oh and my hair is blue now!), so maybe I’ll do a few throwback posts throughout the year. We’ll see…

I’m pretty stoked for 2019 though — I have some fun things planned out already. Besides SDCC in July, I’m planning a trip to NYC in April!!! My plane tickets have been purchased and everything. My trip happened upon impulse after I had a mental breakdown about how I want adventure in the great wide somewhere, and I could probably do so many things, and I got really down on myself about my frivolous spending habits (this was sometime after Black Friday, and ooh lord, I spent sooooooo much). The amount I spend on food, clothes, Funko Pops, comics, and whatnot could totally be put towards traveling or going to shows. I cracked numbers in my head about how much I need to pay off my credit cards (even though I’m bad at math), and my friend Alice (Bodhi Brigade) had told me that tickets to Hadestown, a musical she had talked about on Twitter that I fell in love with, had discounted fan tickets before they’re sold to the general public. I didn’t know what day she got her ticket, but after my little breakdown, I picked a day and just fucking bought it.

I know. I KNOW! It all sounds crazy, stupid, and reckless, but Neil Gaiman said he hopes we make mistakes because when we make mistakes it means we’re trying new things and changing our world… or something like that. Anyway, my goal from that moment forward was to invest more in experiences. I want to do more things, not buy more things (except for books and the occasional clothing item).

Wanna know something else? I bought a ticket to watch White Noise, a play that Daveed Diggs will be starring in, at the Public Theater in NYC a week after I bought my ticket for Hadestown, so I was like, “Okay, yep. I am definitely going!” And by happenstance, my ticket for Hadestown is for the same day and time Alice and Cat are going. What are the odds???

Other goals I have this year are to create more, be more active, and read more books. Last year I told myself I wanted to write at least one thing and submit it for publication, and I did! Not sure of its status, but it felt so good to get back into writing anyhow. 🙂

Crazy Rich Asians

In the spirit of #AsianAugust, I must talk about Crazy Rich Asians. At the time of this writing, I have seen it 3 times! I watched it twice during its Gold Open, and again this past Friday. I seriously can’t get enough of this movie! 🙂

The theater was packed when I watched it the first time (actually, all 3 times!), and it was filled with predominantly Asian people of all ages. You know when you go somewhere and you can feel the energy in the room? What I felt in that theater was akin to every opening night showing of all the Marvel movies I’ve been to. It was contagious. People cheered, laughed, cried, and cheered some more. I took my parents who are both notorious for falling asleep during movies, and I’m happy to say both stayed up for the entire show. They were really excited to see Kris Aquino, a popular talk show host and actress in the Philippines, who played Princess Intan. I was excited to see Nico Santos reppin’ Filipinos, too!

As an Asian American, my emotions were even more heightened when watching this film. And it’s not just because I’m a super sappy and emotional person to begin with. It’s because for the first time in a long time I saw people on the big screen who look like me and my kin, and talk like me and my friends, front and center rather than in the background. They weren’t the stereotypical nerd, kung fu master, dragon lady, or subservient Asian tropes that Hollywood often portrayed us to be, but more so relatable (besides the crazy rich part). I saw parts of my culture reflected on the big screen in an authentic way, and I haven’t felt like that about since The Debut, an indie Filipino American film that starred Dante Basco (aka Rufio from Hook). The Asian diaspora experience isn’t something I’ve seen on screen very much either, which made Rachel Chu’s story, played by Constance Wu, relatable, too.

Growing up, I hardly saw anyone who looked like me in the movies and tv shows I watched. Claudia Kishi from the Baby-Sitters Club and Trini from Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers were the few fictional characters of Asian descent out there, and I truly saw myself in them. The lack of representation often made it feel like my story or my culture  didn’t matter. So when I see characters like the Tico sisters in Star Wars, Ming Na Wen in everything she does, and now Crazy Rich Asians AND To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before… it’s a phenomenal feeling that I don’t quite know how to describe.

I’ve seen a lot people online say Crazy Rich Asians shouldn’t be considered “monumental” and that it doesn’t represent all Asians. Others are referring to it as the “Asian Black Panther.” Those who are criticizing it for its representation have valid reasons, and I won’t dismiss them. But we simply can’t expect one movie to sum up the Asian experience. It’s vast. We have so many stories that need to be told. And to those saying it’s our Black Pantherno, it’s not. To say that is to say each culture will have its own Black Panther — that one movie we can claim. We should all have multiple movies that we can celebrate. If white people can have a plethora of movies, why can’t the rest of us? Crazy Rich Asians is a step in the right direction, and with its success, I can only hope that Hollywood will wake the fuck up and stop whitewashing our roles and letting us be the ones who tell our own stories… which brings me to my outfit…

As usual, I came dressed in theme! Wearing my Asian AF white savior t-shirt was a no-brainer. It bares the names of white actors who have taken on roles of characters who are either of Asian descent or just a straight up white savior: Scarlett Johanson for Ghost in the Shell, Emma Stone for Aloha, Tilda Swinton for Doctor Strange, and Matt Damon in The Great Wall. I wanted my outfit to be somewhat decadent, so I paired it with my Kate Spade statement necklace, yellow floral skirt, and a Gucci bag that I inherited. It is by far the boughiest thing I own. So you bet your ass I stuffed a bag of Shrimp Chips and Hello Panda inside of it.

Unbeknowst to me, a Mandarin cover of Coldplay’s “Yellow” plays during a pivotal scene in the movie. It almost didn’t make the movie, but I read a letter that director Jon M. Chu penned to Coldplay to get permission to use the song. Now knowing the intention behind it and how the song’s lyrics helped Chu reclaim the word yellow moved me even more when I watched it the second and third time. Wearing my yellow skirt was like a happy accident 🙂

I feel like I could go on, and on, and on, and on about Crazy Rich Asians and how representation matters, and how awesome it is the see Asian men as hot love interests because they always get the short end of the stick, or the sweet justice I felt when I found out Crazy Rich Asians beat a Mark Walhberg movie senseless at the box office during opening weekend, buuuut I think I’ve written enough… for now 🙂 Have you seen Crazy Rich Asians yet? Were you just as emotional as I was when you watched it? How many times have YOU seen it?! Let’s talk about it in the comments!

Muggle Struggle

I haven’t been feeling very magical lately. And as you may have noticed, my blog game has been super weak because I haven’t written a damn thing since November 2017. YIKES. I even missed my 7-year blogging anniversary back in April! Who knew being an adult with a full-time job would leave one so restless? Hahahahaha… ::sobbing::

But SDCC is just around the corner, and I’m starting to feel very much like Harry Potter going back to Hogwarts! I get to see my sister, and surround myself with my magical geeky friends once more and I. CAN’T. WAIT.

Plus it’ll be nice to be around witches and wizards who will understand and appreciate my geeky themed outfits! I wore this inconspicuous geeky outfit to work last week (and Sunday because I’m an outfit repeater) and no one could tell I incorporated Harry Potter into it with my “Mischief Managed” tank by JordandenĂ© or my cute pins. 😩

Anyhow, I’ve been feeling the urge to get back into blogging as I’ve been reading TONS of comics. Book reviews are something I’ve wanted to incorporate on Le Fancy Geek, and I know I’ve done a few, but comics are pretty much all I’ve been reading lately, and they’ve helped me become a voracious reader once more. I had a reading goal of 30 books for this year and I’ve already surpassed it because of all the graphic novels I’ve read! And I want to talk about some cool ones I’ve come across because I need to geek out about them!! And with SDCC coming up, there are bound to be endless things I’ll want to share on here!!!

I also have some cute geeky outfit photos I’ve posted on my Instagram account, but not on the blog, so I’ll be sharing those soon!

Burdened With Dapper Purpose

dapper-day-disneyland-loki-marvel-disneybound-disneybounding

Fall Dapper Day at Disneyland is happening today and I am having a major case of fomo. I love going to Dapper Day because it’s so fun to see everyone decked out to the nines. I got to go to the Spring Dapper Day event back in April; my friends and I coordinated with Marvel themed Disneybound outfits. I was torn between putting together a Captain America outfit or a Loki one, but Loki’s got way more swag and I have more green, black, and gold in my closet than red, white, and blue. Spring Dapper Day took place a few days after my sister’s wedding, so Shanice helped me keep my victory rolls intact because I thought they’d go perfect with my pinup inspired Loki ensemble. My hair was so crunchy and flaky from all the hairspray I used, but that’s what happens when you’re burdened with dapper purpose 😛

Since Thor Ragnarok hit theaters I’ve got both of Odin’s boys on the brain, and I saw that guests can now meet both Thor AND Loki at California Adventure!! And BTW – how AMAZING was Thor Ragnarok?! Captain America will forever be my fictional husband, but Thor is legit the best Avenger, and I’m so happy with the direction this film went in. Taika Waititi for all the things, please!!

If you’re wondering, “If these are from April, why it she only posting about this outfit now?” Y’all… it’s been a busy year. I’ve got a back catalog of outfit pics and other things that have yet to be posted on here. I’m trying to catch up, I swear!

I Myself am Strange and Unusual

jordandene-shirt-of-the-month

Jordandene’s last few Shirt of the Month designs has been making me add things to my must-watch list. First there was last month’s “Make it so” Star Trek: The Next Generation tee, and now this month’s is Lydia Deetz’s iconic quote from Beetlejuice! I honestly can’t even remember the last time I watched Beetlejuice, but I remember it scared the figurative sh!t out of me when I was little. Anything that had to do with ghosts/death was just a no-go for me. I found that as I’ve gotten older I have more of an appreciation for the spooky and macabre, so I’m sure I’d totally enjoy revisiting Beetlejuice. 🙂

I adore this quote though because I relate to it 100%. I’ve always been a bit of an oddball; I’ve been called “weird” countless times when I was a kid because of my sense of humor or because of how I’m overly passionate about the things I’m interested in. But isn’t that what living the geeky life is all about?

If you yourself are strange and unusual and want to show it off it loudly and proudly, be sure trick or treat yo’self to this shirt ASAP because today is the last day to purchase it. Don’t forget to use my special code LEFANCYGEEK25 to save 25% off your order too!

Ain’t No Thing Like Me, Except Me

I’m at Disneyland today with my sister and bruv-in-law. Hooray! Long story short, I missed renewing my Annual Pass by ONE day and after speaking to a cast member, I was told I could still receive the $60 discount and $0 down payment as long as I do it in person at the park before the 17th. So… here I am.  ¯_(ツ)_/ÂŻ

Talk about first world problems, huh?

The last time I went was right before Comic-Con and since it would be my first time going on Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout, I had to dress for the occasion with my Rocket Raccoon t-shirt from Fifth Sun and my galaxy print skirt. I was super anti-Mission Breakout because Tower of Terror was one of my all-time favorite rides, but I started warming up to it when I saw what they were doing with the structure back in April, and then Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was amazing, so I changed my tune. My thoughts? IT IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN TOWER OF TERROR. There. I said it. I love how super involved Rocket is with the whole ride experience too because he’s my fave. And it only made my outfit for the day even more appropriate 🙂

If you’re a huge Disnerd and happen to be on Instagram, you might be familiar with @bluewallpics — an IG account dedicated to cool OOTD (outfit of the day) and Disneybound photos taken in front of the blue wall that resides in the Hollywood Backlot area of Disney’s California Adventure. It’s the perfect spot to take pics because the natural light is on point, so my sister and I finally went and to document our outfits. I didn’t even use a filter or tweak them on Photoshop (I mean… I don’t even have Photoshop anymore, but that’s besides the point).

Are you a Tower of Terror purist? Have you gone on Mission Breakout yet? Know of any other super secret spots to take great pics at Disneyland? Who’s your favorite member of the Guardians of the Galaxy? Let’s talk about it in the comments!

First Order of Business

I know it’s only September, and December seems like a long ways away, but The Last Jedi will be in theaters before we know it!!! I can hardly contain my excitement, especially since Force Friday II has come and gone. I cannot wait to see Rose and Paige Tico because they’re not just any Asians in space — they’re Asian sisters in space!! IN A STAR WARS MOVIE!!! I actually got really teary eyed when images of Rose were first released. She’s Asian, has bangs, and a round face just like me! I finally feel like I can see myself in a fandom I love so much. Oh, and the Porgs have stolen my heart. My newfound love for them could probably be another blog post on its own, but today’s post is all about General Hux aka my Huxband. I know, I know. I belong in the trash compactor with Captain Phasma. I just have a massive crush on Domhnall Gleeson, okay? 😛

These outfit pics were actually taken last January —  I just never got around to posting them. Whoops! Seeing that today is Thursday (#TBT), it seemed like an appropriate time to write about it. At first glance I’m pretty sure you can’t really tell it’s Hux related, or could even pass as a Disneybound/casual cosplay, but I went with an all black motif like his ensemble in The Force Awakens. I wore my striped belt to emulate the ones on his coat sleeves, a red necklace because… uh… he’s a ginger, and my Captain Phasma purse from Loungefly. You can’t really see, but on my lapels I’m wearing a General Hux brooch I made myself and a silver pin of the First Order’s logo (check out up-close photos below).

When people ask if I’m on the light side or dark side, I always leaned towards the dark. I was all about giving into my negative feelings (they work wonders for writing angsty poetry, y’know?), and I can’t relate to the zen-ness of the Jedi. Plus, the dark side is so damn fashionable. Hashtag: Swag for Days! Whoever the Empire and First Order hired to make their uniforms, they are the Coco Chanel of a galaxy far, far, away. But after watching Star Wars: Rebels and Rogue One (Bodhi Rook = other space bae), I couldn’t help but think maybe I’m not on the dark side. Maybe I’m a rebel scum! They struggle with their feelings in wanting to do the right thing; they still let anger and hate consume them for just a bit, and then they get their sh!t together.

Much like Bodhi, I’ve defected. Shhh… don’t tell Huxband. Haha!

Are you excited for The Last Jedi? Are you just as obsessed with Porgs as I am? Did you buy new Star Wars swag on Force Friday II? Let’s talk about it in the comments section!

A Bespin We Will Go

star-wars-her-universe-loungefly-geek-fashion

Well, well… what have we here? An ensemble entirely dedicated to Cloud City? Hell yeah, that’s what we have here! Lately it feels like I’m wearing something Star Wars 90% of the time, so anyone who knows me outside of my blog are probably like, “this isn’t anything new.” There are days where I’m like, “Okay, try something different,” but I’ll end up in something Star Wars anyway. But it’s been a few parsecs since I’ve shared any of my ensembles on Le Fancy Geek! So it’s not like y’all know what’s going on with me. Also, wearing a flouncy a-line skirt with crinoline underneath is a bit much for some, so I had make sure this May 4th’s outfit post was, as the kids say, extra. Haha!

Modern-vintage-pinup with a touch of geek chic has been my aesthetic for quite some time now, so this Cloud City skirt by Her Universe is every girly nerd’s dream come true. I paired it with my pink top with lattice details, my denim vest (so I could wear some of my fave Star Wars pins like my glittery Millennium Falcon, Lando, and Sons of Anarchy style Rebel Scum pin), and my adorable Millennium Falcon purse! Another thing I’ve been obsessed with lately are novelty purses — particularly ones of the geeky variety (obviously). Loungefly and Bioworld have been coming out with some really fantastic ones as of late. They’re seriously like Kate Spade for nerds.

I’ll be working for a good chunk of the day, but of course I’ll be rocking some Star Wars threads (like any other day). 🙂

Tick Tock, I’m a Clock

disneybound-cogsworth-disney-style

The fluidity of time is still something that never ceases to amaze me. It’s one of those things that gnaws at me when I can’t sleep at night — how is that it can feel so slow, yet move so fast? How is that my childhood, teen years, and 20s have come and gone in the blink of an eye? How am I where I am now?

Today marks Le Fancy Geek’s 6th blogaversary, and it really doesn’t feel like it’s been that long since I started this thing. But alas, here we are! When I think about who I was when I first started Le Fancy Geek compared to who I am now shows me just how much a person can change through the course of time — whether it be through my style choices, the things I fangirl about the most, and general things like my living situation, job, etc. Sometimes I feel like I’m stagnant, like I’m not growing or the circumstances I’m in aren’t changing, but if I really think about it, a lot of things are completely different. I can still be quite timid and shy, but I’m a lot bolder and sassier than I used to be; I push myself to step out of my comfort zone more. I’m no longer working as a tutor, a job that I’ve had for the last 6 years. Now I’m actually working in the field that I’m passionate about. My new job challenges me daily and is allowing me to grow both my skill set and bank account(!).

Since I’m obsessing over time, it seemed appropriate that today’s outfit post would be of my ensemble inspired by Cogsworth from Beauty & the Beast. 🙂 I got this super cute novelty purse by Danielle Nicole at Nordstrom after discovering a really old gift card I had still had money on it. SCORE! Naturally, I picked my closet apart trying to find anything that would make for a great Cogsworth Disneybound/casual cosplay!

I still clearly remember the night I watched the animated version back in 1991 with my older sister, aunt, and mom. During the part where the Beast holds Gaston over the edge of the castle I quietly said, “Drop him.” When the Beast didn’t do so, I said it again (as if he could hear me, haha), but louder. “DROP HIM!” The theater erupted in laughter. I looked at my aunt and asked, “Why’s everyone laughing? It’s not funny.” When I watched the live action adaptation with my mom and sister, my sister nudged me during that part — it’ll forever be an inside joke. 😛

My new job has kept me busy, and I’ve been too exhausted to maintain Le Fancy Geek, but I’m going to try and be better from here on out! This blog has allowed me to make so many new friends and has given me opportunities to work with brands that I’ve been a huge fan of, so I’m not ready to stop this blog just yet. Thank you to all who’ve been following along with me on my journey for the past 6 years. Here’s to many more! ♄
