Geek Girl Gang

If you want to officially show that you’re part of the coolest gang in the ‘verse, Geek Girl Gang has got you covered!

Geek Girl Gang was founded by fellow geeky blogger/fashionista Meli earlier this year, first starting off with a set of limited edition buttons, and more recently just launched a line of t-shirts! When I first saw the announcement on Instagram, my initial reaction was “MY BODY IS READY.” So when Meli messaged me and asked if I’d like to style one of the tees for my blog, I was beyond thrilled and more than willing 😀

There are currently three different designs to choose from that are simplistic and hella cute to boot! I love that you can pair them with virtually anything and make it chic, casual, or somewhere in between. The designs are all printed on cozy American Apparel unisex tees, so it’s best to go a size down from what you’d normally wear (Meli told me that’s what her and the models did). I wasn’t too sure at first since I wear a women’s XL or XXL depending on the brand, and usually wear a men’s M or L. I just compared the sizing chart on Geek Girl Gang’s webstore to the measurements of a women’s XXL tee and picked L since it was the closest. When you go on Geek Girl Gang’s webstore, you’ll see the pics of the models say what size they’re wearing and what their bust and waist size is, which you will most likely find very helpful if you don’t make things more complicated than they need to be like myself. Ha! And BTW, the L fits just the way I like it!

The black and gold Geek Girl Gang tee is my favorite of the three — it’s so O.G. Or O.G.G. (Original Geek Girl… ha! Get it? OMG. Okay, I’ll stop). The R in “girl” also has a little heart in it which is such a darling touch! Please excuse the fact that my hair is covering said detail in all my pics.

My standard uniform is always a dress/belt combo or a tee/skirt/belt combo (often with a cardigan or some form of outerwear), so I paired my Geek Girl Gang tee with my Her Universe Star Wars skirt from Disneyland that features a bunch of baddies from the Dark Side, and my Admiral Ackbar locket by Rockets and Rainbows (Jennifer Landa‘s Etsy store) to dress it up a little and play off the gold lettering. Plus it’s Admiral Ackbar! My love for him is indescribable and knows no bounds. And of course, I threw in my beloved bowler hat because I’m obsessed with it.

I think that the simplicity in the design of the tee makes it so easy to incorporate accessories from your favorite fandoms to further show off your Geek Girl Gang cred. I’m excited to come up with different ways to style it and think of other fandom based outfits!

August: Osage [Fangirl] County

August-Osage-County-Review

It’s every introvert’s dream to watch a movie in a theater all alone — or whoever they happen to be with. Right? Or is it just me?Last week Caitlin and I headed a town over to watch August: Osage County because I’d honestly rather drive to a country bumpkin town 40 minutes away than go to the nice movie theater downtown that’s 15-20 minutes from my house. If you’re familiar with Stockton, you’d understand. Anyhow, much to our delight, when we walked into the theater for the 10pm showing it was completely empty! I did my little happy bounce knowing that I’d be able to fangirl whenever Benedict Cumberbatch’s strange yet handsome face would grace the screen. Of course, my happiness dwindled down when a couple of other folks came into the theater minutes later. *shakes fists at the heavens*

I had heard many good things about August: Osage County, and from the trailers I had seen I thought it was supposed to be a bit of a dramady, and I did laugh… the things I laughed at weren’t necessarily supposed to be funny though. This movie was rife with tragedy. A LOT of tragedy. I really did enjoy the film, but I just don’t think I’d be able to sit through it again. It was depressing as hell and emotionally shattering. Meryl Streep’s performance as Violet Weston, a begrudged middle-aged house wife with mouth cancer, was phenomenal (duh, it’s Meryl Steep after all), and the rest of the cast (Julia Roberts, Chris Cooper, Julianne Nicholson, Juliette Lewis, Abigail Breslin, etc) was perfect too. And there were so many moments that were horribly uncomfortable and shocking, it got to the point where I had to take the sides of my cardigan and criss-cross them over my face to blind myself from what was going on in front of me. I get second-hand embarrassed so easily. x__x

Given the content of the film, I felt slightly horrible for my fangirl actions. Fangirl actions? Like what? Well for instance, when Ewan McGregor’s handsome bearded mug popped up  my natural instinct was to reach out to the screen longingly and turn to Caitlin and whisper, “OH MY GOD! EWAN McGREGOR! SO HANDSOME! I TOTALLY FORGOT HE WAS IN THIS MOVIE [because I was so goddamn excited about Cumberbatch — we both were].” And when Benedict Cumberbatch showed up as Little Charles, the mentally slow but oh-so-sweet nephew of Meryl Streep’s character, we both reached out to the screen and were like, “Awww, baby! Don’t be cry! OH MY GOD HE’S SO CUTE” (he’s in a bit of a sad state when the audience first meets his character). Oh, and he plays the piano and sings in the movie too [see clip below to hear it]. Yeah. Really. That’s when we had to try our very best to contain our feels, but both of us managed to mutter “No, don’t play the piano, you’re going to make me love you more. OMG YOU CAN SING. I LOVE YOU. DAMN YOU.”

DAMN HIM AND HIS TALENT AND HIS STRANGE BUT BEAUTIFUL FACE.

Whew. Sorry.

I swear, I acted as if I was watching Twilight or something. Ugh. I did my very best to not interrupt the viewing experience of the two other people in the theater though. But y’know what? I think the fangirling helped a bit, otherwise I would’ve left the theater in a completely horrible state of mind which wouldn’t have been ideal for the drive back home. The family dynamics were just so broken, and it didn’t matter that I knew it was fictional, I just felt so miserable witnessing  every character shatter like fine china onto the ground. So I’m glad I watched it with a fellow Cumberbitch who happily and quietly squeled along with me. 🙂

Um, well… this wasn’t much of a review now was it? If anything this movie going experience only showed me that hanging onto itty bitty pieces of your youth (being a fangirl is a step up from being a 12-year old teeny bopper) can definitely help make the most out of any awkward and depressing situation. Does that even make sense? Whatever. I’m gonna shut up now.

Penalosa out. *drops mic*

Nina

Mad Men [in a Blue Box]

outfit details – dress: ModCloth (buy here)  // cardigan: Merona // belt: Xhileration // necklace: Once Upon a Smorgasbord // purse: H&M // Adipose keychain (buy here) // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy similar here) // shoes: Seychelles // ring: Zales (21st birthday present from parents)

Ever since I started watching Mad Men back in 2009 I’ve been utterly obsessed with Joan Holloway’s iconic pen necklace. My mom procured a silver necklace similar to it for me a few birthdays ago, but since I’ve become a full-fledged Whovian I couldn’t help but think of how rad it would be to have a Sonic Screwdriver necklace that’s reminiscent of Joan’s gold pen necklace. I came across a keychain that I could use as a pendent last year, and I finally got around to making it last month. Now I have a fancy Sonic Screwdriver necklace a la Joanie! I like to call it my “Mad Men [in a Blue Box]” necklace. And it looks perfect with my solar system dress (which was on the galactic Wishful Wednesdays post)! 🙂

This has quickly become one of my favorite outfits — I’m pretty sure I’ve worn it at least four times already. The dress is not only fantastic because of its stellar (ha… see what I did there?) print and cut, but its pockets. I HAS POCKETS! Pockets on dresses and skirts is seriously one of the best things ever, like chocolate chip cookies that are crunchy and chewy at the same time. Yes, those kinds of cookies do exist. You can find them at Cafe Rosso at SFSU. Anyhow, the pockets are convenient for holding my phone and chapstick, or for me to place my hands in when I don’t know what to do with them.

I love all the endless possibilities of incorporating my geeky fandoms with it too. With my necklace and TARDIS blue cardigan, this outfit is clearly a nod to Doctor Who. I also added my cute little Adipose keychain onto my purse for maximum Whoness! But I could also fix this up with some of my Star Wars accessories too. 😀

I have one extra Sonic Screwdriver to make another “Mad Men [in a Blue Box]” necklace, but I have a couple of custom orders to fulfill before I go on and make it. I’ll put up a listing for it on my Etsy store in the [maybe] nearby future though!

How do you incorporate your fandom into your everyday wardrobe?

Cheers,
Nina
