Bidness Casual

outfit details dress: BCX (buy here) // cardigan: Gap // necklace: Once Upon a Smorgasbord (similar here) // watch: Timex x Disney // bracelet: Coach // belt: made by me in 7th grade! // shoes: Big Buddha // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here)

Now that I’m working in a retail environment where employees are supposed to be dressed in “business casual” attire, I’m finding myself struggling to find outfits to wear to work! I have tons of dresses, but y’know me — I like fun dresses and a lot of them have short hemlines that are more appropriate for the likes of H&M or Forever 21 (or maybe just my outfit posts?). Last week I nearly wore this outfit to work, but I brought a pair of black nylons and my Dirty Laundry boots to change into at Tim’s house just in case!

This blue BCX dress I got for Dapper Day at Disneyland (seen here) has become an instant favorite of mine since I’m finding that it’s sooo versatile and ideal for remixing! I’ve worn it at least five other times since Disneyland, so don’t be surprised if you see it pop up every now and then on any future outfit posts. 🙂

The belt I’m wearing is actually something I made in a leather working class I took as an elective course in 7th grade… which was 15 years ago (HOLY CRAP)! I’ll admit, my sister took that same class a couple years before me and made a black belt with stars and crescent moons and I totally bit her style when I made mine. If I were to take that class again, I’d probably make a belt with unicorns and flowers on it!

So I know I mentioned that I wore this outfit to work and that I’m supposed to wear “business casual” clothes, and clearly I’m kind of pushing it with my accessories — like who wears a chunky My Little Pony necklace to work? I don’t want to look like some boring sales clerk though! Until one of my managers say something, I’m gonna keep it “bidness casual” with flair!

Cheers,
Nina

GERONIMO!

outfit details – tweed blazer + rings: thrifted // pussy bow blouse: Allen B. by Allen Schwartz // skirt: Xhileration (buy here)  // boots: Dirty Laundry // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here) // TARDIS cookie jar: (buy here)// sonic screwdriver: (buy here)

Happy Who Day to my fellow Whovians!!!

Not only does the second half of the 7th season premiere tonight, but it was announced earlier this morning that David Tennant (10th Doctor) and Billie Piper (Rose) will be returning for the 50th Anniversary episode! OMG, my fangirl heart doesn’t know how to take all the excitement!!! Tonight Tim and I will be making fish fingers and custard to celebrate 🙂

And since today is Who Day it’s only appropriate to have an outfit post inspired by the 11th Doctor (who happens to be my favorite)! I actually wore this on my first official day at my new job (secret cosplay at work FTW). That was a couple weeks ago, but I didn’t have time to snap any selfies so I had to wait for my photographer (a.k.a. my boyfriend a.k.a. Tim <– in case you’re new to Le Fancy Geek) to get back into town and do a proper shoot.

My outfit inspiration!

Ever since Matt Smith made his debut on the show I’d been thinking of ways to interpret his 11th Doctor’s outfit into an outfit I can wear out and about. The black Dirty Laundry boots were purchased at Ross a couple years ago specifically because they kind of reminded me of the 11th Doctor, and I also thought they would go with my Hogwarts school girl outfit (worn here). Rather than wearing a collared shirt and bow tie, I opted for a pussy bow blouse in the same hue as the burgundy bow tie the 11th Doctor wore for most of his debut season (or series, as the Europeans say). I had been looking for one for awhile and found this one by Allen B. at JCPenney last year. I even did a little happy dance when I stumbled upon it! My tweed blazer was a thrift store find from a couple years ago and, of course, I got it because it reminded me of the Doctor! Why else would I get it, really? And you can’t really tell, but the blazer actually has some gold thread so it gives off a little sparkly sheen like regeneration residue! Sorry to those who have no idea what gibberish I’m talking about. Long-time readers and people who know me in general know that I love me some Doctor Who and am absolutely craycray aboot it and mention the show quite a bit on my blog! >^__^<

Good Witch of the South

outfit details – cardigan: Forever 21 // dress: Charlotte Russe // necklace: Swarovski Crystals // belt: Armani Exchange // ring + hair clip: vintage // purse: LeSportsac (buy here) // earrings: Zales // shoes: Report // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here) // wand: Disney Store (buy here)

Oz: The Great and Powerful was a bit of a let down for me. I’m a fan of many Oz related things, but I feel like Disney could’ve done SO. MUCH. MORE. Ugh! It wasn’t particularly terrible, just disappointing with its lack of character development on major characters. *cough*Wicked Witch*cough* It was entertaining enough for me to watch it a second time, though I have to say I mostly wanted to see Finely, the adorable flying monkey voiced by Zach Braff, again! He’s seriously the best thing in the movie. And China Girl is super cute as well. I watched it last week with Tim and then a few days later with Shanice and Jen. Before the movie came out, the girls and I talked about how fun it would be to go to the theater dressed up like the three witches in the film a la Disneybound. I already had the wand, so Glinda was my designated witch. I was inspired by the last outfit she wore in the movie since it had lots of pink, unlike the other two gowns she wore which were mostly white, gold, and silver.

Sooo… this isn’t exactly what I wore when I watched the movie with the two girls. I just made a couple of changes, like my vintage rhinestone clip and silver belt. I originally wore a white rose in my hair and a skinny brown belt. Just a few switches can really help change an ensemble! Plus the glitziness of the clip reflects Glinda’s crown much more than a white rose. I also tried to incorporate some of the elements from not just Glinda herself, like with the mixing of gold and silver accessories, but also from other characters/scenery with my my LeSportsac x Disney It’s a Small World purse featuring adorable little Dutch children that kind of look like Munchkins, and my big yellow flower ring 🙂

Would I recommend watching Oz: The Great and Poweful? Sure. Like I said, I found it entertaining, and if you’re okay with movies that don’t have amazing plot/character development, then you should be okay! It’s visually gorgeous and it has its good moments (Finely! Oh, and Michelle Williams made a good Glinda). But I dare you to try and not want to punch James Franco in the face. He was so schmoozy!

“Isn’t it pretty to think so.”

outfit details – shirt: Out of Print Clothing (buy here) // peter pan collar necklace: TJMaxx (doesn’t have a brand label) // cardigan: Kersh // belt: Mossimo // skirt: Xhileration (buy here) //boots: Steve Madden // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here)

On Friday I went to San Francisco with Jen and Shanice since I didn’t have to work in the morning. Yay four-day weekend (for me anyway)!!! While Jen went to school, Shanice and I window-shopped around the downtown area and I picked up a Glinda wand at the Disney Store! But all the walking around we did left us ridiculously tired and the burgers we ate for lunch didn’t pack much energy. And I spent effing $3.50 on orange juice because I was too tired and thirsty to find Jamba Juice (gift card yo!), but it just so happened to be right next to Jen’s school. *grumble* By the time we met up with Jen to take pictures in the studio I was feeling pretty loopy from being malnourished and dehydrated. I lept, danced, spun in the spinny chairs, and made stupid faces during and in between test shots. Lots of silliness occurred (see picture below).

I posed for a few photos for Jen’s digital photography class and did some for funsies. I found a beautiful typewriter on the props table and had to incorporate it into my shoot since it went perfectly with my The Sun Also Rises shirt from Out of Print Clothing! This might look familiar to you as it was on my Christmas Wish List post in December. Tim ended up getting it for me for Christmas 😀 I added a glitzy Peter Pan collar necklace to it that I found at TJMaxx last month. Fancy, yah? Ernest Hemingway probably wouldn’t be impressed, but that’s okay. Me likes it! I read The Sun Also Rises for a Modern American Novel class during my first semester as SFSU. It was the only book I thoroughly enjoyed from that course, which is kind of sad considering that we read five books. Well, I find it sad anyway.

You know what else is sad? I sent my camera off to Best Buy to get it checked out — it’s unfixable and the camera I had is no longer sold/available so now I have to go and look for another one! They gave me a list of cameras that are “comparable” to mine, but they were all regular point and shoots whereas mine was a DSLR. I don’t want to do camera homework! I just know that I’m looking to get another Canon. I’m kinda iffy of the G15, which is basically the upgraded version of my camera, just because it doesn’t have a swivel screen and the screen it does have is exposed. I need the swivel screen. I just do, okay? Okay.

If you happen to be into cameras, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Nina

Da Na Na Na Na Na Na Na BATMAN!

outfit details – dress: Material Girl // cardigan & belt: Merona // earrings: H&M // watch: Disney x Timex // hair bow: upcycled from a broken headband // shoes: Target ballet flats I DIY’d with Batman fabric // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here)

Batman’s been my favorite superhero ever since I was an itty bitty thing. I didn’t necessarily read the comics, but I watched the old campy version with Adam West all the time with my grandpa, and of course I loved the Tim Burton movies that came out when I was around 5, and Batman: The Animated Series was an after-school staple! My sister and I even had hair ribbons and shoe laces adorned with Batman’s emblem — I guess I’ve been doing the geeky-girly thing since I was a little lady. Ha! Anywho, I attempted to do some color blocking and pattern mixing with this outfit by mixing my kelly green lace dress with royal blue and hints of yellow to compliment Batman’s logo on my shoes that I DIY’d myself! I made them in August by using acrylic paint, Mod Podge, and Batman fabric on an old pair of ballet flats that I  found a bit boring. They looked really awesome after they were done and I was extremely happy with the way they turned out, but after wearing them twice the paint and bits of fabric started falling off. NOOO! I still need to figure out how to salvage them. Are there any crafty folks that might be able to give me some sage advice? I did manage to salvage the hair bow I’m wearing though — it was originally on a headband that Jen and Shanice picked up for me in Japan Town, but when I found it behind my vanity it was broken! I ripped the bow off and attached it to a clip and voila — insta-accessory! And the polkadots are kind of comic bookish since the illustrations on some of them, particularly the really old ones, were pretty dotty. 🙂

Nina

Peachy Keen

outfit details – blouse: Perch by Blu Pepper // skirt: Vera Wang Princess (buy here) // belt: Mossimo // ring + bracelet: vintage  // watch: Disney x Timex // boots: Steve Madden // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here)

My DSLR has been on the fritz as of late. It just hasn’t been taking super awesome quality photos like it used to! I took it to Best Buy’s Geek Squad after work this morning since it’s under insurance, but they told me that it seems fine and that if I want it to get checked out, I would have to pay $35 for shipping if whoever looks at it says nothing is wrong with it. WTF, right?! Chuck Bartowski and the Nerd Herd would not put me through this! Well, maybe Jeff and Lester would. <– sorry if you’re scratching your head at my Chuck reference. Go watch Chuck. It’s awesome and Zachary Levi (voice of Flynn Rider from Tangled) who plays the titular character is adorkble! Anyway, what is the point of having insurance on something super ‘spensive if they’re going to make me pay for shipping and stuff? RUGH! I’m sorry, I’m just so frustrated because I rely on that camera for this blog and my Etsy store. But thankfully Tim has an even fancier DSLR and was in town yesterday (I helped him pick out glasses at his optometry appointment, weee!!!) so he offered to take pictures with it. I originally asked him if he could use my phone’s camera. Ha!

Some of you may recognize this skirt since this is its third appearance on my blog. Sorry I’m not sorry it’s been on here so many times, I love it too much and it happens to go with lots of things in my wardrobe! Don’t be surprised when it pops up in future posts 😉 I wore a burgundy blazer with this ensemble too and we took a picture of me in it, but I looked at it again and thought I looked kinda slouchy, so no blazer pic! Sorry. :/ At first I thought it would look weird with the peach pussy bow blouse (I basically got that blouse for free at TJ Maxx because my aunt gave me her TJ Maxx rewards thingy worth $30), but I tried it anyway and thought it worked. I passed by my BFF Shanice’s sister on my way to work and she said she liked my outfit, so yay! There’s proof that someone thought it looked alright too. I actually got quite a few compliments on this outfit yesterday which made me all kinds of happy 🙂

I got my ring with the 18th century looking couple at the flea market two weeks ago. There’s this vendor that my mom’s homies with (she frequents the flea market so much that vendors know her name) had a ziplock bag full of jewelry that was “broken” or “not that good” so I dug through it and found this ring and a bunch of other neat pieces that I deem “good enough.” I don’t know where that bracelet came from, but while trying to clean my room I found it! And my rad gold watch was purchased during my last Disneyland trip. Isn’t it glorious?! It has a bunch of tiny Mickey ears all over ❤

Hope you all have a fantastic Friday and a fabulous weekend! Who’s watching the Super Bowl on Sunday? I’m not! 😀

Cheers,
Nina

Of Little Ponies & Unicorns

outfit details – dress: Xhileration // peter pan collar necklace: M Style // my little pony necklace: Once Upon a Smorgasbord (I made it!) // glasses: derek cardigan (buy here)

This is something that I think of almost everyday and it constantly annoys me because I can never think of a good answer for it: If I were a My Little Pony, what would my cutie mark be? No, I’m serious. I think about this a lot. Cutie marks are like tattoos, y’know? Once you have it it’s there FOREVER. I already know that I will eventually get a tattoo of Rory, a carousel horse, and the Gallifreyan symbol for ‘friend,’ but if I were a MLP I wouldn’t want a dog on the side of my ass! I used to think I’d have chocolate chip cookies on the side of my flank (because I love cookies, duh), and later on I thought maybe a book + quill (for my love of reading and writing), and now I’m like maybe a laptop (for my love of the internet?)… or a pile of Swarovski crystals (because I love to make necklaces)? I DON’T KNOW. And let’s not even talk about what color combination I would be. UGH.

It’s normal for a woman that just turned 27 last Saturday to think of things like this, right? o,0

So anywho — why do I keep talking about ponies? Um, because they’re awesome. Duh. And I also started experimenting with my jewelry making skills by using toys as pendents! Specifically My Little Pony toys. I know this isn’t an original idea, but I wasn’t too crazy about some of the ones I’ve seen made, so I wanted to put my own spin on it. I approach my jewelry making the same way I dress myself — how can I incorporate geeky/childish elements without looking like a 12-year-old, but still age appropriate? I think I succeeded in making them simple, yet fun, statement necklaces that anyone anypony can wear! 🙂

After making the Rarity necklace (pictured above) I decided to keep it because… well, she’s my favorite! She’s a unicorn with a purple mane who loves fashion. How could she not be my favorite?

All the ones pictured above are currently listed on Once Upon a Smorgasbord 😉

I’ve been cranking out necklace after necklace for the past two weeks and I’m really excited about them! I have all sorts of things planned for my Etsy store this year and these MLP necklaces are just one of those things. Hope you guys like them!

Cheers,
Nina

Lions, and Tigers, but no Bears. Aww man!

outfit details – bomber jacket: Espirit // polar bear pullover: Forever 21 (buy here) // purse: Coach // necklace: Swarovski // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here) // jeggings: Vera Wang // boots: Steve Madden

‘ello! Hope you all had a lovely weekend, I know I did (on account of Saturday being the anniversary of my birth)!

To celebrate my entry into my late 20s (oh my god, I was 17 ten years ago?!), Tim and I went to the Sacramento Zoo to hang out with the animals! I had never been there before, plus the thought of being able to feed a giraffe was too exciting. That’s actually something I wrote on a bucket list I created when I was in high school — feed a giraffe. I’m obsessed with tide pools and stingrays at aquariums, I suppose I’m just really enticed by the idea of being able to interact with wild animals. But alas, when feeding time came the giraffes weren’t interested in the food. Apparently during the winter they just don’t care that much about om noms because they’ve already stored enough energy or something like that.

But I WILL feed a giraffe one day! It’s gonna happen, dammit!

Fun fact time: Betty White helped raise money for the zoo’s giraffe exhibit in 2009. BETTY WHITE INTERACTED WITH THE GIRAFFES I SAW WITH MY OWN TWO EYES. <– I’m also obsessed with Betty White. Who isn’t?

I’m trying to get back into the habit of bringing little toys with me to document the places I go, so I brought Rarity and my little Rory Williams action figure that Jennifer got me for my birthday! I also wore my polar bear sweater to go along with the zoo theme of the day, but to my surprise the Sacramento Zoo doesn’t have any sort of bear exhibit. 😦

The lack of bears didn’t ruin my trip though, I saw tons of other interesting animals like the singing gibbons (Google them, they’re all kinds of entertaining), a pensive primate (pictured above), an eastern bongo (pictured above), and some wild kitty cats! I couldn’t get any decent shots of the lions, the tiger, or the snow leopard (it was so small, it looked like it was as big as a Border Collie), but I managed to take a picture of the jaguar. 🙂

The red panda was by far the cutest critter there, it totally reminded me of Rory (my dog, not the action figure)! But my new favorite zoo animal has to be lemurs because they were ridiculous amounts of fun to watch — I think Tim and I spent a good 10 minutes watching them run around and sun bathe. Especially since one of them kept holding their arms out in a way that said both “come at me bro” and “look at me, I’m fabulous!”

And speaking of fabulous, anteaters (Tim’s new favorite animal) look like they’re ready for the red carpet. I don’t know, there’s just something glamourous about them. Oh, and we totally saw some anteater action of the bow-chicka-bow-wow kind… y’know what I’m sayin’? It was so weird.

Overall, it was a good birthday! After the zoo we went to Old Town, ate dinner at Tower Cafe (if you’re in Sac you’ve gotta try the Malaysian Chicken Sandwich, holy crap!), did some shopping, and had a pizookie at BJ’s. Om nom nom.

Cheers,
Nina

Lucky #13

outfit details – fox pullover: Sweater Project // skirt: Vera Wang – Princess (buy here) // boots: Blowfish (buy here) // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here) // peter pan collar necklace: M Style (Macy’s) // watch: Timex x Disney

I feel like I’m sooo behind on my blog posts. Actually, I am behind.

Case in point: I went to the Winchester Mystery House a couple days before Christmas with Tim and his cousin Sarah from Ohio and I never got around to blogging about it because I was too caught up in Christmas festivities. Legit excuse? So instead of blogging about my birthday trip to the zoo (which happened yesterday) I’ll go ahead and talk about the Winchester Mystery House since today is the 13th day of the year and the 13th year of the 21st century! <– 21st century started in 2001, my bad.

How is this even relevant to the Winchester Mystery House? Well, Sarah Winchester, the woman responsible for the beautiful yet eerily funky Victorian mansion was overly superstitious and obsessed with the number 13. There are many cases where a room has 13 windows, or 13 of… whatever.

Because of copyright issues, we weren’t allowed to take pictures of the inside of the house (although people have because I totally saw some pics of the interior from users on Instagram. Tsk!), but we were allowed to take photos of the garden and whatnot. It’s a shame that visitors aren’t allowed to take pictures inside because they decorated each room with beautifully ornate Christmas trees! Oh, and it would’ve been a crazy amazing photo op to do for a  Downton Abbey-esque outfit picture!

I’ve been wanting to visit the Winchester Mystery House for quite sometime as I’ve always seen it on the Travel Channel. The house was constantly under construction for 38 years until Sarah Winchester died. As I said before, Winchester was overly superstitious and she built the house because the spirits of those who had been killed by the rifles of her late husband’s company (Winchester Rifle) told her she needed to build a house but never complete it. The mansion’s full of strange oddities with staircases leading to nowhere, cupboards that are an inch or two deep, low-rise and confined staircases that zig-zag, and a door that leads to a good  neck-breaking drop (pictured above and below) just to name a few things.

Another thing about this place is that there have been many reports of paranormal activity! As a self professed “scare-dy cat” I was kind of hoping to see a ghost or feel something… because I’m just weird like that. We also added on to do the basement tour and our guide said that guests have reported seeing a ghost down there. I didn’t see anything!

But what made the tour for me was the fact that our tour guide for the interior part of the house was a Whovian (Doctor Who fan, in case you didn’t know)! As we made our way down a sketchy hallway he warned us to beware of any minotaur that might be lurking and that totally made me think of “The God Complex” from season 6. As I walked down the hall I said, “I should’ve brought my Sonic Screwdriver” to which he said “That would have been helpful.” OMG. My nerd heart sang. It’s so fun to find other Whovians, we’re kind of like unicorns y’know? He even asked if anyone went by the name Alonso and proceeded to say, “Allon-sy Alonso!” and mentioned something about the Sonic Screwdriver not having a wood setting. A lot of people in our group were muttering “I don’t get it” but I was jumping up and down because I couldn’t contain my excitement about the Doctor Who-ness that was happening!  Tim asked him if we had to be wary of the statues outside in case of a Weeping Angel attack. The tour guide’s face totally lit up. It was such a fabulous nerdtastic moment!

I definitely want to go back during Halloween because they do these flashlight tours at night and everyone wears headphones and the tour ends in the seance room! I have no idea why I want to scare myself like that. I don’t even like scary movies. o,0

Cheers,
Nina

The Best Things In Life Are [Kind of] Free

While scrolling through Reddit a few months ago, I came across a promotional ad from Coastal that offered a pair of FREE glasses. That’s right, I said FREE! And they did my prescription for free too (probably because it’s a very light Rx).

I was skeptical at first, but other Redditors and bloggers said it was a legit offer and all you need to do is pay for shipping and handling & insurance. I didn’t get around to claiming that offer then since it expired before I had a chance to look at all the face candy. But as luck would have it, I saw the ad on Reddit again last month and told myself I wouldn’t miss out! I checked out all the wayfarers they had to offer because that’s my favorite style (in case you couldn’t tell from past posts). I know wayfarers are considered “hipster” but what isn’t these days?

After about 2 hours of decision making (yes, it took me that long to decide) I picked out a pair of Derek Cardigan glasses (style 7008 in ‘Smoke’). They’re a translucent shade of grey (1/50 shades <– horrible joke), and they have these cute multiplication and division signs on either side, as well as equal signs on the stems. I’m horrible at math, I absolutely hate it, so it’s like I literally have a contradiction on my face when I wear them. And the fact that I’m Asian and am stereotypically supposed to rock at it is somewhat sad. But it’s okay, I still love them!

Unfortunately, it took FOREVER for them to get here. I know it’s not Coastal’s fault (I blame the FDA  for holding all the FedEx packages ransom in Memphis), but don’t you hate when you order something and it doesn’t come right away? I love getting packages, even if I know what’s in them. It’s like opening a present on Christmas! Coastal saw that my glasses were taking FOREVER to get to me, so they re-sent them and I finally got them on Monday!!!

Coastal also sends their customers glasses in a nice case with eye glass cleaner, a wipey-thingy, and a little screwdriver to tighten and loosen glasses as you please. My optometrist has NEVER hooked me up like this. And instead of paying $106, I spent grand total of $17.38. Saaaa-weeeeeet! I think it was totally worth the wait. 🙂

If you would like to get your own free pair of glasses at Coastal, use the code FIRSTPAIRFREE at the checkout. There’s no expiration date listed, but you should get on this offer ASAP anyway! They also have a promotion to get two pair of glasses for $89 + free shipping with the code 2FOR89. I’d be all over that but 1. I’m poor and 2. all the money on my next paycheck is going to Disneyland. *le sigh*

As you can see, I’m ridiculously ecstatic about my new glasses! And if you know me, you know I have a tendency to misplace my glasses all the fuggin time, so having a spare pair is like the greatest thing ever. Anyhow, I tried to get Rory to take pictures with me for this post, but he was NOT having it. He’s such a bumhole sometimes. I managed to get ONE decent shot though.

Cheers,
Nina
