Merry Sithmas, Happy Hothidays!

hothiday 2015

Merry Sithmas my little ponies¬†tauntauns!!! Here’s the holiday greeting card I sent out this year ūüėÄ

I’m off to SoCal to spend Christmas with my dad’s side of the family — everyone is packing up things last minute as I type this — so this is gonna be brief.

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I hope you have an amazing day and a happy new year!! And don’t tell me you don’t celebrate the new year because that happens to all of us. ūüėõ

Walkin’ in a Wampa Wonderland

I think it’s so cute whenever families put out personalized holiday greeting cards with a nice family photo on them during this time of the year. My family’s never really put them out — not that we never wanted to, I think we’re just lazy. Mother, if you’re reading this, sorry I’m not sorry! You know it’s true. ūüėõ

Even though I’m a perpetually single dog mother, I don’t see why my relationship status should hinder me from putting out one of my own. So this year, after wanting to ever since Rory came into my life 4 years ago, I FINALLY made a holiday greeting card to send out to friends and family with just me and Rory!

But, as you know, I’m a fancy geek, so I couldn’t just make it a¬†“traditional” card with the Christmas tree and usual red & green color scheme. Nuh-uh, honey. As soon as I realized Rory’s not an albino ewok, but a mini wampa, I immediately searched for doggy wampa costumes and once I found one, I knew that the theme of my very first single-dog-mama holiday card would be “Happy HOTHiday!” Next year we’re probably gonna roll with “Merry Sithmas,” since we have matching Vader sweaters, but who knows? I might want to go with another fandom theme next year. But “Merry Sithmas” is obviously in the lead.

I’m going to be sending out my cards tomorrow, and I don’t want to share what they look like quite yet, but I’m really¬†excited about them! So I thought I’d share a couple of pictures from the informal photo shoot my mom did for me and Rory. ūüôā

Wookiee Wednesday: Kessel Run[way] Ready

Welcome to another Wookiee Wednesday! Ever since Force Friday, us Star Wars fangirls (and boys) have been bombarded with all kinds of superb¬†clothes and accessories from various different companies to fulfill our geeky fashion needs. To say it’s¬†been seriously overwhelming is an understatement. I am constantly having to tell myself to cool my jet-packs (heh) and put my wallet away. There’s just soooOoOoOoo MUCH to chose from! What’s a fangirl to do?!

I started getting a little overwhelmed when choosing which accessories and whatnot to feature, but then I decided to narrow it down on things from the lighter side of the Force. I’m always “dark side this, and dark side that,” so I think it’s time to restore some balance on the blog. ūüôā

1. Han Solo purse by Sent From Mars | 2. R2D2 necklace from HSN
3. Chewbacca raglan from JCPenney| 4. Wicket purse by Loungefly
5. BB-8 t-shirt by Fifth Sun | 6. R2-D2 heels by Irregular Choice

    1. I am a self professed bag hag and huge Han Solo fan, so when I saw this Han purse by Sent From Mars my fangirl heart exploded! The details are insane! I am so willing to get rid of all my basic black purses to make room for this one in my collection.
    2. Is this the droid I’ve been looking for? ME THINKS SO. After Her Universe announced that they would have some merch on HSN, I took a look online afterwards and saw that they have some gorgeous Star Wars jewelry, including this blingy R2 necklace. — insert heart eye emojis
    3. JC Penney is slayin’ it with their Star Wars apparel right now! I have a couple of tees that I picked up there, but this Chewie raglan was nowhere to be found in my size while I was shopping. For now, I shall just admire it from afar.
    4. Novelty purses are so much fun, so I’m so excited that Loungefly has been coming out with tons of cute ones as of late. When I saw this Wicket one pop up online a few weeks ago I nearly choked on my spit from gasping so violently at the site of it because¬†OMG LOOK AT HOW CUTE IT IS!!!!!
    5. Soooo, I actually own this BB-8 tee! I bought it from Fifth Sun after they released a bunch of new Force Awakens tees since they were having a sale. The movie hasn’t even come out yet and everyone already loves BB-8. But really, how could you not?
    6. I’m not a high heels kind of girl. If I’m going to some extra oomph in my step I prefer wedges because they’re more stable. BUT HOLY EFFIN’ SPACE BALLS. These shoes by Irregular Choice have R2 on them!!!! I’ve been a long admirer of the quirky unicorn Irregular Choice heels ModCloth always seems to have in stock, but these R2 ones? Stop it. JUST STOP. I love how they’re so gaudy, girly, and utterly geeky. Those are all my favorite things rolled into one item! Waaaaannnntttt.

Have you discovered and/or bought any awesome Star Wars goods recently? Or maybe have your eye on something? Tell me about them in the comments!cheers

Punch It, Chewie!

Aloha, my little ponies! Hawaii has been pretty damn amazing… except for the millions of mosquito bites I have acquired. Ugh! The mosquitos here can go to hell and die. Other than that, I’ve been having lots of fun with my family! Last weekend I got to attend my cousin Amanda’s wedding to her longtime boyfriend Nick. I’ve never cried or gotten emotional at a wedding, but something about their’s made me ruin my makeup a little bit. I’m so happy for the two of them since this wedding was a long time coming! I jokingly refer to Nick as the big brother I never wanted because he likes to annoy me on purpose and I him. Now all the pressure is on my sister’s boyfriend of nearly 13 years. She even caught the bouquet, so the pressure is even more real. Haha! Sorry, Ryan!

I originally was going to wear this really pretty dress from Heart of Haute with hydrangeas all over it with a black pair of ballet flats, but the weather here has been pouring rain¬†on and off AND it’s also been freakin’ hot and humid. I actually wore this outfit the day before exploring the North Shore and thought it might be better to wear, and it was. –Phew

And you might have noticed that I threw in some Star Wars accessories with this ensemble too. ‚ėļ

The teals¬†and¬†blues of the¬†Millennium¬†Falcon belt I got at Hot Topic matched the teal dress I got from the Old Navy outlet in Livermore, and floral things + sci-fi is mah thang, so pairing it with this cover up I originally got to wear poolside was a no-brainer. I didn’t even mean to pack my Chewbacca ring, but I found him in my carryon as I was unpacking at the hotel. If that’s not kismet, I don’t know what is. The Darth Vader purse by Loungefly was also going to be used with the outfit I intended to wear, but it works with this one too! It looks like it’s small, but it actually holds quite a few things! I was able to stuff my lipstick, chapstick, battery charger + chord, little wallet, my phone, and BB-8 Funko and Stitch Tsum Tsum into it. It’s easily become my new favorite accessory!

Now that I think about it, nearly everything I wore to the wedding was purchased at the outlet in Livermore just a few days before I flew to Hawaii. Hooray for last minute shopping!

I head back to California on Thursday, so for now I’m just going to enjoy the rest of my vacation.¬†More blog posts about Hawaii to come sometime after! But you can follow my Hawaiian Holiday on Instagram if you’d like to see what I’m up to. ‚ėļ

5 Fandom Friday: My Favorite Fandom Accessories

5 fandom 2

Happy Friday, my little ponies! I’m super stoked about this week’s 5 Fandom Friday as it’s fashion related. Woo! To say it was¬†pretty tough¬†just trying to pick five of my favorite fandom related accessories is an understatement — I have sooo many baubles and doo-dads to choose from, so it was a ridiculous. #firstworldgeekproblems

I mean, I didn’t call my blog Le Fancy Geek for nothin’!¬†Anyhow¬†here are the ones I decided to feature for this post:

1. Admiral Ackbar statement necklace by Rockets & Rainbows

I don’t know why, but I just love Admiral Ackbar! Is it his name? The fact that he’s a huge piece of calamari? Or the fact that it’s so fun to say his infamous “IT’S A TRAP” line? Perhaps it’s all these things. But what I do know is that when I first saw this Admiral Ackbar necklace (made out of an old Mirco Machines toy) in Jennifer Landa‘s Etsy shop,¬†Rockets & Rainbows, I knew I had to have it!

I also did an outfit post a couple years ago with it, you can check it out here.

2. Loki necklace by Trinket Slot

I made an¬†immediate beeline when I spotted this Loki necklace from across the way at Trinket Slot‘s booth at Anime Expo last year! I love how it allows me to subtly show off my allegiance¬†to Loki’s Army,¬† and also the fact the helmet has a heart in it.‚ô°

If you’d like one for yourself, you can get it¬†here.

3. Chewbacca ring

I am sooo in love with this ring! I remember seeing a post on Pinterest with a Stormtrooper, Boba Fett, and Vader ring too, but no indication as to where one could buy such epic finger trinkets. RUGH! But when I went to Portland last year, I visited a store (can’t remember what it’s called, sorry) and I saw the same exact rings!!! It took me awhile to figure out which one I should get, but ultimately¬†decided Chewbacca was the best choice. ¬†Plus I have a lot of Darkside swag anyway. Gotta keep balance in the Force, y’know?

4. Minnie Mouse ears

How could I not include an accessory from Disney a.k.a. my biggest fandom of all?! Mouse ears¬†are so much fun, I wish it was acceptable to wear them everywhere besides Disney parks, conventions, Halloween, etc. Like, can’t I just come to work and be taken seriously while wearing them?

5. Hufflepuff infinity scarf

When my sister told me she was crocheting scarves for Christmas last year, I got all excited and¬†said exclaimed, “I WANT A HUFFLE PUFF SCARF!!!” But she told me she already bought all the yarn she was going to use for everyone. Sigh. Come Christmas morning I found¬†that she was already a step ahead of me. She even made a little one for Rory! I’m pretty sure if he put the Sorting Hat on, he’d be placed in Hufflepuff too. ūüôā

What are your favorite fandom accessories? Lemme know in the comments!

Star Wars @ the Tech Museum

Last month for my birthday, my friends and I went to the Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination exhibit at San Jose’s Tech Museum! It was so fun seeing some of the props and costumes from the Star Wars saga. I feel like there could’ve been more things on display (no ewoks, tauntauns, Lando Calrissian, Boba Fett (he made an appearance there only recently), or Queen Amidala’s ornate ensemble from The Phantom Menace), but I still really loved seeing what was there, like Chewbacca! There was a sign that said he’d be leaving for the Smithsonian on January 16, so I’m really glad that I was able to see Chewy before he left. ūüôā And there was also a wampa, and jawas, a model of the Millenium Falcon, and Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper AND OTHER REALLY AMAZING AWESOME THINGS!

Here are some of the pictures I took while I was there:

This is the only Northern California stop for the Star Wars exhibit and its stay has been extended until the 23rd of March, so if you’re a huge Star Wars fan, you should definitely stop by! Who knows what else they might add to it!

Cheers,
Nina

Flying Solo

Oh, Valentine’s Day. Or Single’s Awareness Day to the unattached.

To the masses, it’s just a stupid holiday that candy confectioners, floral arrangement businesses, and greeting card companies came up with in order to rake in a few extra bucks to keep momentum up after the fall/winter holiday season.

For years, people have assured me that Valentine’s Day isn’t just a day to celebrate romantic love, but all kinds of love — familial love, friendship, whatever. The cynic in me wants to call bullshit on that because if you look at the merchandise, that’s all it’s really targeted for. But the Edgar Allan Poe tote and chocolate dipped Oreo my mom gave me (and the other presents she’s given me on past V-Days) and the stuffed unicorn I’m going to get from Jen later today says otherwise.

I remember listing Valentine’s Day as one of my favorite holidays as a youngling because I liked the fact that we dedicated an hour of the day at ¬†school to eat cookies and drink punch and pass out super adorable cards to classmates and get super adorable cards in return. But then it stopped happening. Suddenly, I became painfully aware that Valentine’s Day was for romantic couples. And at school we were given the option to buy Crush-o-Grams or some other sort of treat to send to friends during the day, and if your name didn’t get called by the delivery person, well, it was just a bit soul crushing. I always found myself bitter because I didn’t have anyone to call my Valentine, or just didn’t have anyone in general, and the only person who ever sent me a Crush-o-Gram in high school was my mom and she marked it as “From Jon Bon Jovi” because I was totally into 80s music my junior year of high school and I thought Jon Bon Jovi was pretty hot. “You couldn’t have at least put Orlando Bloom? He’s my age appropriate crush! And he’s cuter!” I said to my mom after receiving it.¬†It was a sweet gesture, but so embarrassing! I love her for it anyway.

Even though I had someone for two years to call my Valentine, and oh God was I ever excited to celebrate my first one as a non-single lady, I still thought the holiday was a bit stupid. Like many others have argued, I agree that it shouldn’t take one particular day of the year to make all these grand gestures to show the person you’re with how much you love them. But to be completely honest, I have to admit that I relished the fact that I wasn’t alone and could properly celebrate the day by social standards if I wanted to. You’d feel the same way if you spent 24 (or 25?) consecutive Valentine’s Days alone, wouldn’t you? And I thought I didn’t have to ever worry about being alone each time the 14th of February rolled around till the day I died. Silly me for being so confident in my last relationship.¬†I also grew up with a father that sent my mom a beautiful bouquet of flowers no matter what each year. Even if he was in the Philippines (which he was for quite a few Valentine’s Days), there’d be a bouquet waiting for my mom at work.¬†Oh, and this year he decided to put the flowers together himself (tulips instead of his usual go-to red roses). So yeah. Expectations. I haz them… thanks to the way my dad treats my mom and Disney movies. Stupid Disney movies.

And now I’m back to where I started. Flying Solo with no wookiee to keep me company in my cockpit. Today also marks exactly two months since my break-up, so I can’t help but feel a bit woebegone and angry on this day where romantic love is glorified and I’m still trying to cope with the fact that I don’t have it anymore, and probably won’t for quite some time.

George Takei posted this ¬†meme on his Facebook page with a caption that says: “Proof that you can be just fine alone today.”¬†I’ve done this 24 or 25 times alone before. I can do it again. And I’d like to think I’m Han Solo, so this cheered me up a wee bit.

Whether you’re taken or single, I hope the day treats you well.

A Fancy Geek Your Pooch Will Be

yoda dog ears petco comic con

Geeky pet owners rejoice! Petco debuted their special line of Star Wars threads and toys for pooches and kittens at Comic-Con a few weeks ago!

When I first got Rory ¬†a couple years ago I was really bummed ¬†by the lack of geeky dog apparel out there, so there are really no words for me to express how ecstatic I am over this crazy awesome line! And the Petco booth also gave out Yoda ears for pets as con exclusive freebies!!! They ran out when I went on Sunday, but my sister was able to grab a pair for Rory when she went on Thursday ūüėÄ

The collection hits stores on September 1 and will include an array of hoodies inspired by your favorite Star Wars characters (the Chewbacca and Boba Fett ones… shut up. Just. Shut. Up.), leashes and collars, fluffy dog beds shaped like Yoda and Darth Vader, chewy squeaky toys, and there’s also little mice dressed like characters for your kitty to play with!

One piece I can’t wait to get my hands on is the Darth Vader knitted nordic sweater. Rory is going to be the baddest ball of fluff on the block. Is it weird that I’m extremely happy that my dog and I will have matching knitted Vader sweaters¬†and that I can’t wait to take pictures of the two of us so I can turn them into holiday greeting cards? Actually, I don’t care if it’s weird. I’M TOO EXCITED TO CARE.

While I was perusing the booth, another con goer looked at me and said, “Oh man. I’m going to have to buy all this stuff for my dog.” Me too, dude.¬†Me. Too.

Do you plan on getting your pooch or kitten a little Star Wars trinket (or maybe one or two, or ALL OF IT)?

Cheers,
Nina
