Tick Tock, I’m a Clock

disneybound-cogsworth-disney-style

The fluidity of time is still something that never ceases to amaze me. It’s one of those things that gnaws at me when I can’t sleep at night — how is that it can feel so slow, yet move so fast? How is that my childhood, teen years, and 20s have come and gone in the blink of an eye? How am I where I am now?

Today marks Le Fancy Geek’s 6th blogaversary, and it really doesn’t feel like it’s been that long since I started this thing. But alas, here we are! When I think about who I was when I first started Le Fancy Geek compared to who I am now shows me just how much a person can change through the course of time — whether it be through my style choices, the things I fangirl about the most, and general things like my living situation, job, etc. Sometimes I feel like I’m stagnant, like I’m not growing or the circumstances I’m in aren’t changing, but if I really think about it, a lot of things are completely different. I can still be quite timid and shy, but I’m a lot bolder and sassier than I used to be; I push myself to step out of my comfort zone more. I’m no longer working as a tutor, a job that I’ve had for the last 6 years. Now I’m actually working in the field that I’m passionate about. My new job challenges me daily and is allowing me to grow both my skill set and bank account(!).

Since I’m obsessing over time, it seemed appropriate that today’s outfit post would be of my ensemble inspired by Cogsworth from Beauty & the Beast. 🙂 I got this super cute novelty purse by Danielle Nicole at Nordstrom after discovering a really old gift card I had still had money on it. SCORE! Naturally, I picked my closet apart trying to find anything that would make for a great Cogsworth Disneybound/casual cosplay!

I still clearly remember the night I watched the animated version back in 1991 with my older sister, aunt, and mom. During the part where the Beast holds Gaston over the edge of the castle I quietly said, “Drop him.” When the Beast didn’t do so, I said it again (as if he could hear me, haha), but louder. “DROP HIM!” The theater erupted in laughter. I looked at my aunt and asked, “Why’s everyone laughing? It’s not funny.” When I watched the live action adaptation with my mom and sister, my sister nudged me during that part — it’ll forever be an inside joke. 😛

My new job has kept me busy, and I’ve been too exhausted to maintain Le Fancy Geek, but I’m going to try and be better from here on out! This blog has allowed me to make so many new friends and has given me opportunities to work with brands that I’ve been a huge fan of, so I’m not ready to stop this blog just yet. Thank you to all who’ve been following along with me on my journey for the past 6 years. Here’s to many more! ♥

No Rescuer Required

I know I put up a Valentine’s Day themed outfit post last week, but I really like what I wore on the day itself, so I thought I’d share it on the blog too! The t-shirt I wore is from TeePublic and features a Star Wars x Disney mashup by James Hance of Penny from The Rescuers as Princess Leia. He’s one of my favorite geek artists of all time and he just seems like a really swell guy. This judgement solely comes from following him on Twitter and Facebook. I urge you to check out his artwork! Not only does he do great geek mashups, but creates some mind blowing portraits of fictional faves; he recently did a beautiful portrait of Princess Leia with flowers that I’m in love with. The header on his website is “Relentlessly Cheerful Art,” and if his work doesn’t put a smile on your face, something is legit wrong with you!

teepublic-shirt-star-wars-james-hance-disney

Like I mentioned in my Valentine’s Day post, I didn’t have any plans. But throughout the day I felt pretty zen… and then super sick because all I ate was chocolate covered strawberries, marshmallows, Girl Scout cookies, and cupcakes. That aside, I didn’t even cringe when I looked at that Facebook feature “On This Day” where it shows you all the things you ever posted on a particular day on Facebook. A photo album full of pictures from my first Valentine’s Day with my ex popped up, but rather than roll my eyes and wistfully look at the pics, I just kept scrolling to see what else I posted. And then I came across this gem:

“Okay, look. I had to ask myself a really hard question. Who do I love most? And the answer was so obvious. It was staring me in the face the whole time. The person I love most is me. I love me most. Look, if I could run across the beach into my own arms, I would.” – Jackie Burkhart

I posted that quote from That 70’s Show on Valentine’s Day 2011. I think I relate to it more now than I did then. In 2011, I was 25 and so desperate to find the kind of love that was only seen in romantic comedies and Disney movies. At that time I was in an on again/off again “situationship” with a guy I pined over for so long — 3 years to be exact. For 3 years it was very “will we or won’t we?!” Or maybe it ended by that time? I don’t remember, and I deleted the guy’s “break up” email a long time ago, so I can’t look it up in GMAIL for reference. I’m sure I posted that quote to prove a point. Like, “Yeah, I don’t need a man. I HAVE ME!” when really I was an emo sack of shit that just wanted to be loved (goddammit)! Today, I can say I’ve experienced the kind of love I always dreamed of as a little girl, but it came and went in what feels like less than 12 parsecs. There are days where I feel completely jaded by how unlucky I’ve been with love, however I don’t put all my energy into dwelling on it like I did when I was in my early 20s. Now, I’m learning to love myself more despite my flaws (and holy shit, do I have many).  There’s a million things I haven’t done, and men can wait! I will choose myself over any dude… besides Rory, obviously. Because every princess needs a furry sidekick! And if I’m going to go along with this whole princess schtick,  I’m going to look up to Leia because she’s the OG self rescuing princess. If my Scruffy Looking Nerf Herder happens to come along one day, so be it. Until then, I’m not sitting by metaphorical wishing well hoping he’ll find me.

Maybe I should wear this shirt every Valentine’s Day. One can’t help but be relentlessly cheerful with such cute art on their person! How’d you spend your Valentine’s Day? Or are you like “meh, whatever” about it? Let’s talk about it in the comments!

Roses Are Red, TIE Fighters Are Gray…

star-wars-style-pinup-loungefly

It’s Valentine’s Day and for once in the past three years I’m not bitter about it. Hooray for progress! I’m not doing anything to celebrate since this holiday is like whatever¯_(ツ)_/¯, but I did go out and kick it breakfast style with my friend Cailtin yesterday for a holiday that is superior by far: Galentine’s Day! But y’know, as much as I rag on Valentine’s Day like most other single people, it’s kind of hard to truly hate it because Valentine’s Day decorations are completely my aesthetic. This is something I’ve come to terms with. I love all the hearts and the pinks and reds and golds, the roses, the candy, the cute cards… UGH! I just can’t hate it. Everything is too damn cute and pretty. 😛

I didn’t wear this particular outfit today, but I thought it’d be cute to put together a retro geeky pinup look together to share on the blog for Valentine’s Day. Obviously, I had to go with a floral print skirt and Star Wars accessories! The hair flower is something my sister picked up for me a few months ago when she went to some tiki convention in San Diego. I’m obsessed with hair flowers — apparently at my tutoring gig, students refer to me as “the girl who always has a flower in her hair” — so my sister sent me some pics to see if I might want anything. How cute it is?! It’s a bit gaudy, but so fab! And I added a trifecta of Valentine’s Day-ish Star Wars pins to my red velvet top.

I Am One With the Floral, the Floral is With Me

A couple weeks ago my aunt randomly asked me, “Do you want to go to a LuLaRoe party?” My response was obviously an enthusiastic YES! If you’re unfamiliar with LuLaRoe, it’s a clothing company that’s pretty similar to Avon and Mary Kay in the sense that people can sign up and become sellers that work from home either full time or as a side gig. A lot of them set up Facebook groups and post their inventory so you can purchase whatever your heart desires… so long as no one beats you to claiming it! I first heard about the company through my sister as her co-worker sells LuLaRoe on the side. Girl has like 20+ leggings and I don’t know how many dresses or skirts by them! LuLaRoe’s claim to fame seems to be their fun patterned leggings which feel like butter. I own three pairs. Haha!

My aunt’s co-worker invited us to go to her daughter’s LuLaRoe party, so I went just to look. I had no intention of buying anything, but I obviously didn’t leave empty-handed! I got 3 Azure skirts, but when I tried them on I lifted it up over my bust to see if they’d look good as a dress. As you can see, it totally works! I paired this floral lavender one with my a bunch of Star Wars accessories because why not? I also recently ordered some awesome Star Wars enamel pins from BB-CRE.8, so I put them on my denim jacket. One of them is a bouquet of blue tulips coming out of the hilt of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, and the other is a speech bubble that says, “I Am One With the Force… The Force Is With Me” which is Chirrut Imwe’s mantra from Rogue One. That particular pin is really amazing because it glows in the dark (green, like the Force) and on the back it says, “Are you kidding me? I’m blind!” So many little easter eggs packed into one pin… I had to have it! I’ve actually been drooling over the Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader (not pictured) bouquet pins since December, and even placed an order back in January. But it didn’t go through and they sold out! When I saw that they had been restocked, I hit “add to cart” and “buy” in less than 12 parsecs.

I just realized I never gushed about Rogue One when I watched it back in December! I’ve heard a lot of people compare it to Force Awakens, but I don’t quite think that’s fair since Rogue One is a stand-alone film. However, I will say that I had a lot more fun watching Force Awakens because it was like revisiting old friends and seeing new ones, but Rogue One‘s story, to me, was much more compelling and original. And I can’t believe I haven’t seen it a bajillion times! I definitely want to head back to the theater and watch it at least one more time before it goes away. Also, Bodhi Rook and Cassian Andor are my new Star Wars baes. Shhh… don’t tell General Hux I’ve gone rogue against the Dark Side.

Quicksand

birthday-cupcakes

The first month of 2017 has come and gone, and to say it’s been a doozy would be a complete understatement. I celebrated my 31st birthday on the 12th last month, and though the day itself was okay — I went to work, tried to keep the fact that it was my birthday under the radar (despite the fact that I’m usually a complete attention whore when it comes to my birthday), but my boss found out anyway (thanks, Facebook) and surprised me with cupcakes, and I got a little too white girl wasted drunk during Happy Hour at work since my dinner plans were cancelled (oops) — but the next day I felt crippled with anxiety. It gnawed at my chest all day and continued throughout the weekend. I felt like a waste of space. I felt like everything I did wasn’t good enough. I felt so pathetic. And haven’t felt that way for quite some time.

I was staying at my cousin’s apartment in San Francisco (I work in the city 3 times a week), and her and her husband went away for the weekend, so I had the whole apartment to myself come Friday night. It felt nice to be alone and to have all of San Francisco at my disposal, but I’ve always been an anxious person. At 24, my doctor diagnosed me with anxiety disorder. So I’m always stressed, constantly worried, fearful of little things (like making a phone call), but somehow I’ve managed to keep it all at bay and feel relatively “normal.” It seemed like I was finally starting to get over the depressive funk I’ve been stuck in for the past 3 years. But I guess turning another year older and finding that I’m still not where I want to be in life creeped its way to the surface and ripped apart the protective layer of happiness I managed to create.

Sitting quietly on the couch of someone else’s home with nothing but my thoughts was a recipe for disaster. Ennui swept over as I sat in an apartment very much like the one I imagined myself living in when I was 21. My dream was to be a successful writer living in San Francisco with a tan French Bulldog named Jacque Cousteau, and that I was very well traveled, and was basically like Carrie Bradshaw minus the whole writing about my sex life for all to read bit. Hopefully in a happy long-term relationship, or happily single. That’s what I imagined. Then I dwelled on the reality of my actual situation — still living with my parents, still writing but not exactly the kind of stuff I thought I would, not as well traveled as I’d like to be, involuntarily celibate for the past 3 years… the good part though? I have a dog! But he wasn’t there with me. And then the loneliness sank in. As much as I love being an introvert and don’t like being around people, I like having them around sometimes. And even though I have no desire to be in a romantic relationship any time soon, I found myself longing for that kind of companionship. Then I downloaded Bumble (and have done absolutely nothing with it).

I found myself crying in the shower for no reason that weekend. I cried myself to sleep at night too.

I’m just frustrated all around. I’m frustrated with myself because I still can’t seem to move forward. I feel like I’m trying, but it’s not enough. I feel like I’m waist deep in quicksand, and for every inch I manage to claw my way to, I get sucked back in 5 more inches. I’m just stuck. I’m frustrated with the state of the country I live in because holy hell, what is even happening?! It’s like America has become a goddamn dystopia. The combination of that and where I’m at emotionally/mentally, well… it sucks. It just sucks. I’m so frustrated I can’t even think of a good way to phrase how sucky it all is!

Things could be worse. Believe me, I know. I get irritated when I find myself dwelling on things when I know there are people worse off than me. I have a job (2 actually), I have friends and family that love and support me, I have a roof over my head, I have a dog who lights up with joy when I come home. Even though I have all that, it doesn’t mean the negative feelings I have aren’t valid. It doesn’t mean I’m wrong for feeling the way that I feel. And if there’s one thing I learned about myself within the past 3 years, it’s this: I am strong. I am a fucking fighter. In all the times I cry, and curl up into a despondent ball of hopelessness, I’ve found that I always manage to pick myself right back up and keep going.

So here I go. Attempting to crawl out of the quicksand. Bring it, 2017.

Accio Geek Apparel: A Loot Wear Review

Last month’s Loot Wear was full of magical items from franchises like Doctor Strange, Kingdom Hearts, Adventure, but most importantly (at least to me anyway) Harry Potter! If you’re unfamiliar with Loot Wear, it’s a monthly geeky mystery apparel subscription service. There are 5 different subscriptions you can get, or you can pick a bundle to get multiple items!

Here’s a breakdown:

  • Wearble ($14.99)
  • Socks ($9.99)
  • Loot for Her ($14.99)
  • Tee ($8.99)
  • Undies ($9.99)

Bundle subscriptions are available too!

  • Socks & Wearable: 2 pairs of socks and 1 wearable ($20.99)
  • Risky Business: 1 tee, 1 pair of socks, and undies ($16.99)

Every month’s theme includes items from franchises that are related, so I was pretty damn excited when I saw that Loot Wear’s November wearble and socks subscriptions would include Harry Potter items! Here’s all the stuff that came with it:

  • Wearable: Harry Potter lounge pants
  • Loot Tees: Doctor Strange
  • Loot for Her: Kingdom Hearts knitted scarf
  • Socks: Harry Potter and Doctor Strange
  • Undies: Adventure Time feat. Earl of Lemongrab

Loot Tee:

I wasn’t too excited about the Doctor Strange movie despite the fact that I’m a self-proclaimed “Cumberbitch” because of the whole Asian whitewashing thing. I do want to look into the comics eventually though. With that prejudice aside, I thought the Doctor Strange tee was cleverly designed and I love the fact that it’s like an ugly Christmas sweater! I paired the tee with my navy polka dot skirt, a gold belt, and some red ballet flats. I would’ve worn my red cardigan with this, but it was nowhere to be found. Oh well!

Loot for Her:

A pair of Kingdom Hearts socks was included in a previous subscription with the same design as this scarf. Though I don’t play the game, I’ve gotten the most use out of this particular item besides the Harry Potter lounge pants because it’s super warm and cozy! I think the symbols are inconspicuous enough for me to get away with wearing it. And as you can see from the pics, I wear the scarf two different ways 🙂

Socks, Wearble, Undies:

The Harry Potter socks are hands down the best socks Loot Wear’s come out with. EVER. They are soooooooo cute!!!!! I can’t stand it! And I’ve been wearing the lounge pants non-stop (don’t worry, they’ve been washed twice already). They’re on the lightweight side, so I have to bundle up on blankets to keep me warm at night. But I still love ’em! Make sure you watch the unpacking video to get a better look at them and the Lemongrab undies.

December’s theme is “Revolution” and tomorrow (December 19) is the last day to subscribe to get it! Make sure to do so before 9pm PST!! Any of these subs would make the perfect Christmas present for the fangirl or fanboy in your life ♥

  • Socks: Guardians of the Galaxy, Mr. Robot
  • Wearable: Rick and Morty
  • Loot For Her: Spider-Gwen
  • Loot Tee: Invader Zim
  • Undies: Rick and Morty

I Know My Value

It’s almost been a month since the world turned upside down, and I’m still trying to process everything. Like… how the hell did this happen?! If you haven’t been living under a proverbial rock, surely you know what I’m talking about.

I struggle with considering myself an optimist (now more than ever) because despite my great need to have a strong moral compass, and desire to believe that there’s kindness and compassion in the world thanks to my heavy Disney diet as a child, I can’t help but feel frustrated and despondent knowing that everyday some form of hate is being spread. With the results of the election, I’ve noticed that people who have opposing views to mine are growing a hell of a lot more bolder in spreading that hate. Sure, others who are like-minded to my views posted many encouraging things on social media that basically said they support you if you’re female, black, LGBTQ+, latinx, or muslim. Well, I identify as female, but why aren’t asians as a whole included in this list? As a community, we’re just as angry, hurt, scared, and frustrated as any other community. Hollywood has already left me feeling quite marginalized; as much as I love Marvel, the backlash that came with Doctor Strange has me seething with rage. I know the director acknowledged the issues of whitewashing, but I found his excuses to be very weak. Story tellers, talented ones at least, are able to overcome such obstacles as writing ethnic characters that aren’t racially stereotypical. I could go on about the frustration I feel over the lack of asian representation in Hollywood, but I feel like that’s a whole other blog post.

Despite my recent frustrations with Marvel’s cinematic universe, they did give me and the rest of the geek community Peggy Carter. She’s been a beacon of light for us geek girls (and boys) by being a scrappy bad ass that takes shit from no one. This Agent Carter inspired dress from Her Universe almost feels like armor in a sense because I feel like I can kick ass and take names whenever I wear it (and it has pockets!).

Over the past month, I’ve been turning to different fandoms to find some form of comfort because escapism every now and then is needed in times like these. Whether it’s Poe Dameron saying “As long as there’s light, we’ve got a chance,” Albus Dumbledore saying “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one remembers to turn on the light,” or the Hamilton soundtrack in its entirety, they all fill me with a bit of hope and inspiration. But Peggy’s infamous “I know my value” line has been coming to the forefront of my mind a lot more lately. The quote in its entirety ends with “Anyone else’s opinion doesn’t matter.” I know that my life and those in my community are worth it just as much as anyone else’s, even if others don’t seem to think so.

You’ve Got Red on You: A Loot Wear Review

Last month’s “Horror” themed Loot Wear subscriptions came with terrifyingly cool swag, and the debut of a brand new subscription geared towards men: undies! Here’s a breakdown of what each subscription came with:

  • Wearable: Alien
  • Loot Tees: Shaun of the Dead
  • Loot for Her: Edward Scissorhands Raglan
  • Socks: The Nightmare Before Christmas & The Walking Dead
  • Undies: The Walking Dead

I tossed my Alien wearable and Walking Dead socks in my laundry basket since I forgot to take pictures of each before wearing them. Whoops! However, you can get a better view of them in my unpacking video (at the very top of this post). I did style both the Loot Tee and the Loot For Her tops, so you can take a looksie at my Loot Wear ensembles and also my thoughts on them and the Nightmare Before Christmas socks and Walking Dead undies. 😀

Loot Tee:

I’m not one for scary things, but Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorite movies! When I found out there was going to be a Shaun of the Dead t-shirt for October’s Loot Wear subscription, I totally fangirled 😀 While I was a pretty disappointed I was sent a unisex shirt instead of the women’s size like last time, I still really dig the tee. I love how it incorporates Shaun and Ed’s respective weapons for the zombie outbreak, and also the subtle vinyl record.

Loot For Her:

This raglan’s material feels so much softer and cozier than the Princess Bride or Archer ones they released previously for the wearble subscription. Unfortunately they sent me a size M when I’m a XL/XXL, but it still fit me! It definitley would’ve been a lot more comfortable had it been my proper size. Another thing I like about the raglan is the design. You can’t really tell in my outfit picture since my boobs warp the design a little (#BigBoobieProblems), but Edward’s hands are shaped like a heart. That along with the quote from the movie is cute and heartbreaking all at once!

Socks:

Like I mentioned before, I forgot to take a picture of my Walking Dead socks before wearing them, so they’re not pictured here. However, I will say that I love them! Every time there’s a Walking Dead item, I always say that I’m not into that franchise, but damn if Loot Wear doesn’t always come out with cool wearbles and accessories for them! The maroon socks feature whit silhouettes of weapons that I’m assuming the characters of the show use to fight against the walkers (is that what the zombies are called in that show?), including Lucille, Neegan’s barbed wire baseball bat. <– I only know that because everyone and their mother have posted stuff about him since the latest season premiered. Also Jeffrey Dean Morgan is the kind of fine you don’t spell correctly: fiioooone!

EDIT: OMG. I was so busy thinking about how fiooone Jeffrey Dean Morgan is, I forgot to talk about how much I loved the Oogie Boogie and Jack Skellington socks that the socks subscription came with! I love the design on the socks with Oogie Boogie hovering over and unbeknownst looking Jack. The design also has a bit of a black light poster feel to them. And how cute is Jack holding that heart?! I thought the was “Horror,” not Kawaii Macabre!

Undies:

As you can see in my unpacking video, I was pretty surprised to see Loot Wear also included these Walking Dead chonies for dudes. They’re boxer briefs and the material is really nice and soft. I tried them on over my opaque nylons and you know what? They’re actually perfect to wear underneath skirts or dresses to help keep your nylons in place! I told my friend about them and they said, “You can stick stuff in the slot too!” And I was like da fuq are you guys talking about? Then it dawned on me and I thought, 1. there isn’t a slot for that, and 2. WHY WOULD I STICK THINGS IN THERE? That’s what a bra is for!

I am extremely excited for the month of October’s Loot Wear items because the theme is “Magical” and will have items from Harry Potter, Doctor Strange, Kingdom Hearts, and Adventure Time!!! Here’s a breakdown of what franchises will be featured for each subscription:

  • Socks: Harry Potter and Doctor Strange
  • Wearable: Harry Potter
  • Loot For Her: Kingdom Hearts (it’s supposed to be a knitted item)
  • Loot Tee: Doctor Strange
  • Undies: Adventure Time

My Ultimate Loot Crate Dream Crate

The O.G. geeky subscription box service Loot Crate wants to know what kind of awesome gizmos and gadgets a-plenty their fans would put in their very own Dream Crate. When I learned about the project and was asked if  I’d be interested in putting something together, I obviously said, “YAAASSS!” This is something I’ve given a lot of thought to before I was even asked to write about it, but since they’ve already done “Fantasy” and “Magical” (my ideal themes), I had to figure out a different theme that would encompass franchises I’m a fan of that have a fairytale, fantasy, epic journey, or magical-like quality to them.

So, I came up with “Story Time” and it would include items from The Neverending Story, The Princess Bride, Once Upon a Time, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones.

loot-crate-dream-crate-le-fancy-geek-blogger

The Princess Bride: A copy of Cary Elwes’ “As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride”

With a theme like “Story Time,” it only makes sense to include an actual book! I think it’d be cool for it to include a copy of Cary Elwes’ book, and to make it extra special Loot Crate can design a different cover that’s exclusive to this particular crate. 🙂

Harry Potter: Hermione Funko Pop! figure

I love the Hermione Funko Pop! that comes in the Hogwarts Express edition because she’s holding books, but I don’t the train itself. Sooo, I think Loot Crate should team up with Funko to make one similar to it that’s exclusive, but make it so that the book is more intricate with details like a title and artwork. And it should come with a little Crookshanks because how cute would that be?!

Once Upon a Time: Belle’s Chip tea cup

I have a love/hate relationship with Once Upon a Time. There have been many times where I watch an episode and I’m like, “WHY DO I STILL WATCH THIS???” I’ve been with it from the very beginning; I’m too invested in Regina finding happines,  dammit! Anyway, I love Belle’s Chip tea cup and I associate drinking tea with “story time,” so this seemed like the perfect item to include from the franchise. Even if someone who doesn’t like Once Upon a Time got this crate, I’m sure they’d love the cup anyway and find it very useful.

Game of Thrones: Bookmarkers

Book markers will obviously be needed if there’s going to be an actual book in the crate. They don’t necessarily have to be this exact Game of Thrones book mark set, but I’d prefer something like it.

The Neverending Story: Falkor t-shirt

This movie was my jaaaam when I was a kid! And I feel like The Neverending Story doesn’t get a whole lot of love with geeky subscription boxes, and that’s why I decided to include it in my dream crate. I call Rory “Baby Falkor” since him and the luck dragon look so much alike, so of course my dream crate’s Neverending Story item would be a Falkor t-shirt! It doesn’t necessarily have to be this one that I found on Redbubble by Mandrie, but I’d like the design to have really cute artwork. Also, the Loot Pets box that coincides with this should definitely come with a matching t-shirt!

What do you think, my little ponies? Would you be stoked if you opened up a Loot Crate box and unearthed all these goodies? Tell me what your perfect Loot Crate box would include in the comments section!

Cheers,
Nina
