Nerdvember: Week Three

I nearly didn’t make it all 7 days for week three of Set To Stunning’s Nerdvember challenge/contest, but somehow I managed! Well… day 19 hardly counts, but whatever. I still wore something geeky and documented it. 😛 And you’ll notice I wore something Star Wars inspired for all but one day during week three!

Day 14: Darkside/Hoth

I got picked up from my Airbnb in Anaheim by my aunt, and just hung out at her place. This was the day before Season of the Force kicked off at Disneyland, so I packed my Utinni Bikini Hoth AT-AT dress because I needed something to mark the occasion! Oddly enough, that day was extremely cold. Not like Hoth cold, but cold enough to make me bust out with my parody of Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” — mine goes: it’s gettin’ Hoth in hurr (so Hoth!) / so put on some more clothes / I am gettin’ so cold / I’m gonna slice a tauntaun. 😀 I also paired my outfit with tons of Darkside accessories, including the Princess Leia Alex & Ani bracelet I picked up at the park and the Darth Vader brooch I made.

Day 15: First Order

I planned on wearing my First Order dress by Utinni Bikini weeks in advance for Season of the Force. Darkside swag, all day, err’day. Or, maybe not everyday, but MOST days. 😀

Day 17: Darth Vader

This day felt sooo long! I flew from San Diego to Sacramento and my dad picked me up to head home to Stockton. By the time I got home, I didn’t want to do a damn thing. But I did wear my favorite Vader pullover all day.

Day 18: R2-D2

I’ve been obsessing over this dress ever since I caught a glance of it on Her Universe’s Instagram page about a month ago. It’s too cute!! It’s only available at Disneyland, so I made it a point to track it down ASAP when I went to the park. I wore this for Wookiee Wednesday and when my friend Brianna passed by me she stopped and said, “Oh my God, I bought that dress at Disneyland too and I almost wore it today!” She even has the same cardigan as me, so we’re gonna plan a day to be super twins!

Day 19: Lazy Star Wars Pajama Day

I woke up with a headache, a sore throat, and a stuffy nose, so I called in sick and stayed home in my Star Wars jammies all day long.

Day 20: Firefly/Serenity

This was a more subtle geeky look since the only geeky thing I’m wearing is my Firefly necklace, by Quantum Mechanix and I also added my Serenity keychain on a purse, also by Quantum Mechanix. Shiny!

Day 21: Star Wars Baddies

This skirt is also by Her Universe and exclusive to Disney parks. It was also an impulse buy because I had no plans to buy it. I just wanted to get an R2 tank at Star Trader and then this skirt just lured me in! It’s really cool, because from afar it looks like a jungle print, but when you give it a closer look, it has silouhettes of Darth Vader, AT-ATs, Tie Fighters, Interceptors, Boba Fett, Jabba the Hutt, etc.

I can’t believe Nerdvember is almost over! So far it’s showed me that I have way more geeky clothes in my closet than I thought I did. 🙂

Wookiee Wednesday: Season of the Force (Part I)

This Monday I was lucky enough to go to Disneyland as they kicked off Season of the Force! I’m not sure how long it’ll be sticking around the park, but I hope it lasts for really long time! Disney has basically transformed Tomorrowland into Star Wars Land and I am LOVING IT!!! The Innoventions building has been redone as the Star Wars Launch Bay which houses some props from both the older films and The Force Awakens, along with a gift shop on the bottom level. Meet and greets with Darth Vader and Chewbacca are also housed there. I took a picture with Darth (obviously) since I prefer the Dark Side of the Force.  I’d love to meet Chewbacca during my next visit though because I wanna give him a big ‘ol hug! The upper level of Innoventions is now Superhero HQ which is where guests can now meet Thor and Spider-Man, and not Captain America because they replaced him with Spider-Man for who the frak knows what reason? #bitterfangirl

Anyhow, Disney also turned Space Mountain into Hyperspace Mountain, where it feels as if you’re riding along a band of Rebel X-Wing pilots amongst TIE Fighters and Star Destroyers, and Admiral Ackbar even yells, “IT’S A TRAP.” I had the dumbest smile plastered on my face the entire time I rode it for the first time, and then cried tears of happiness the second time I rode it. Who knew a roller coaster could evoke such emotions out of a person? I certainly wasn’t expecting to react like that. Disney, can you just keep Space Mountain as Hyperspace Mountain forever and ever? It’s SO MUCH better than regular Space Mountain. Star Tours also has a brand new scene with appearances by Finn and BB-8, and the theater in Tomorrowland also has a new show called “The Path of the Jedi.” There’s also new Star Wars themed food and Star Trader (my favorite store to shop at in the park), has tons of new Star Wars merch. Notably, new Her Universe swag… which was really dangerous for my bank account.

I’m still so overwhelmed by all the cool stuff that they have there now! I always find Disneyland to be truly magical around this time of year with all the Christmas decorations and the special holiday stuff going on, but with the new Star Wars film coming out in a month (29 days to be exact), Season of the Force felt especially magical! I saw Stormtroopers walking through the crowd, I got to friggin’ meet and interact with Darth Vader (he asked me if I had any plans from Rebel spies to take down the Empire, and when I said no he told me that he sensed that I was being truthful) and I got to feel like an X-Wing pilot. :: crying happy tears ::

Here are some pictures I took while I was there! For next week’s Wookiee Wednesday, I’ll be sharing a few more 🙂

I look a little too happy to be meeting Lord Vader, huh? 😛

Nerdvember: Week Two

Hey my little ponies! I managed to do all 7 days for week 2 of Set to Stunning‘s Nerdvember Instagram challenge/contest 😀 This week I nearly had a Marvel themed outfit for each day.

Day 8: Princess Leia

You can totally tell when I’m too lazy to use a tripod/don’t have anyone to take my outfit pic. Haha! Anyway, it was pretty windy/rainy throughout most of the day and I had no plans to go out, but Jen and I ended up going to Hot Topic. So I threw on this pullover with a felt Princess Leia nesting doll I made last year with my black circle skirt and my pink motorcycle jacket (obviously not pictured).

Day 9: Tony Stark

This is probably my favorite outfit of week 2! I paired my Her Universe Tony Stark jacket with a brown floral skirt. And I put my little Funko Pop! Iron Man and Captain America keychains on my purse because I felt weird being all #TeamIronMan when I’m #TeamCaptainAmerica ALL. THE. DAMN. WAY. And this day was also Jen’s birthday, so we ditched the gym and went shoe shopping in Modesto after work instead. 😛

Day 10: Sherlocked

After years of searching for a bowler hat, I finally found one at the H&M in Modesto! And I was having a funky hair day Wednesday morning, so I paired the hat with my “Bored” Gold Bubble Clothing dress and my go-to Sherlock accessories.

Day 11: Captain America

It was Veteran’s Day, so I had to wear something Captain America themed. Wednesday was my stay-home-and-work-on-things-for-the-Geeky-Faire-day, so I just wore jeggings and this Cap pullover from JCPenney.

Day 12: Spider-Man

I really wanted to wear my Ryan Gosling shirt since his birthday is November 12, but it was too cold to wear what I would’ve wanted to pair with it, so I went with this Spidey pullover I found at Wet Seal last year.

Day 13: Loki

This was such a LONG day! I went to the airport in Sacramento to catch a 7 am flight to Long Beach, got picked up and dropped off to my AirBnb in Anaheim, dropped my bags off since check-in wasn’t until 3, and spent hella time at Disneyland by myself. I was hoping that Thor would be out taking pics in Tomorrowland which is why I wore my Loki dress by Her Universe, but both him and Cap are gone and Tomorrowland is basically Star Wars Land right now. Totally not complaining about that though. Thor is coming back on Monday as they re-open the Innoventions building in Tomorrowland, but Cap is being replaced by Spider-Man. Now that, I am TOTALLY complaining about. :: insert angry emoji face ::

Day 14: Cap & Peggy

I woke up in the wee hours of the morning to do the Captain America 10k (like I mentioned in a blog post earlier today), and later headed to Disneyland wearing my Her Universe Agent Carter shirt and the new Captain America necklace I made along with a Cap brooch Jen made. They’ll both be available at the Geeky Faire at Whimsic Alley next month!

Captain America 10k

Yesterday morning I did the Captain America 10k at Disneyland. I’m so proud of myself for finishing; I finished in 1 hour and 35 minutes according to the MapMyRun app! I didn’t even train properly (because I’m horrible), so the fact that I was able to finish in the amount of time that I did is a great feat for me. Last week I wanted to see how long it would take me to do 6 miles, but I only made it to 2 miles (in 30 min) because I over hydrated and had pee like somethin’ fierce, so I went back to my car as fast as I could. But since I managed to keep a pace of 15 min per mile, I figured I’d be okay. In grade school and high school I was always that person during P.E. that constantly tried to find a way out of doing any activities, and I especially hated doing the mile. I was always one of the very last to finish, and it was so embarrassing because while I was out there struggling, everyone else in my class was done and watching me go at a turtle’s pace. It would’ve helped if the teacher taught us to keep a steady pace and not go full throttle from the get go, y’know? Jogging and power walking is where it’s at.

But you know that one scene in The Avengers where Loki totally gets Hulk smashed? I currently feel that way because HOLY CRAP, my body is in so much pain! I woke up this morning like:

My back in particular hurts like hell, but I felt really good after the 10k yesterday! My adrenaline was up and I was so happy that I didn’t pass out in the middle of it. And then an hour later I got a headache from not being hydrated enough. That didn’t stop me from going to Disneyland later that day to celebrate though! And I got to hang out with Diana of Our City Lights, so yesterday was a good day. 🙂

Nerdvember: Week One

Hey my little ponies! The ladies over at Set to Stunning are holding their second annual Nerdvember contest over on Instagram, and I decided to participate this year. The gist of it is is that participants are supposed to wear a geek inspired outfit — it can be a casual cosplay or an outfit with geek clothing/accessories — and post it on their Instagram account. Towards the end they’re going to pick a bunch of winners and give out fun prizes! I thought it would be a fun challenge, plus my blog’s emphasis is geek fashion, so it only made sense. 😀

Check out their post to find out more about Nerdvember here.

Every Sunday I’m going to share my outfits of the week on the blog with a little blurb about each one. So let’s begin!

Day 1: R2-D2

I remember thinking, “Oh, Nerdvember is gonna start soon!” during the last few days of October. And then all of a sudden it was November and I didn’t even realize it until the middle of the day. So I just took a selfie of me wearing my We Love Fine R2-D2 pullover and my Han Solo necklace with a denim vest. Not pictured is my pink, baby blue, and navy floral skirt. Oh well!

Day 2: Winnie the Pooh

It was a blustery day and a little rainy, so I thought it was the perfect time to bust out my Pooh Bear pullover. At first I was wearing jeggings, but felt so weird wearing them, so when I went home during my lunch break I changed into this long red circle skirt. 😛

Day 3: More R2-D2!

I wore my R2 pullover again and went all out with the matching accessories!

Day 4: Wookiee Wednesday

Like I mentioned before, on Wednesdays I always wear a Star Wars themed outfit no matter what. I paired my Chewbacca raglan top with this pink and black floral skirt from H&M and this light pink cardigan, because Chewbacca and flowers are a winning combination.

Day 5: Soot Sprites

This was a super lazy day and it was cold as f*ck that morning! But I paired my soot sprites dress with some thick black nylons, ankle boots, a zip-up hoodie, and my faux leather motorcycle jacket.

Day 6: Batman/Gotham

Another lazy day! I came across my Detective Jim Gordon necklace while cleaning my room and decided to make an outfit around it. I paired the necklace with a Batman necklace my friend Amanda got me for my birthday, my Batman hairbow, sparkly ring, and also had Rory wear his Batman t-shirt. 🙂

Day 7: Harry Potter

Yesterday just so happened to be National Book Lovers Day, so I nixed the Firefly outfit I was originally going to wear and put together this Harry Potter outfit! It was cold and I wanted to wear the Hufflepuff infinity scarf my sister made for me last year, but it is nowhere to be found! So there goes that stereotype of Hufflepuffs being particularly good finders. 😛

I’m excited to come up with some outfits for this coming week because I’m heading down to Anaheim for the Captain America 10k! I just got my top for the race last night, I just need to find some navy blue sweats which are surprisingly hard to find. Everything is black or grey! WTF is that all about? But anyhow…

Are you also participating in Nerdvember too? If you’re not, it’s not too late to start! You can also follow me on Instagram to see what I’m up to here: @lefancygeek 🙂

The Biblio Files: Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song

We all have celebrities that we wish could be our bffs. Don’t even lie! You know you do. Sara Bareilles is one of mine because she’s really goofy and is very fluent in speaking sailor like me (meaning we like to swear all the fucking time), so I think we’d get along fine. Plus she listed Miss Saigon as a musical she liked listening to in her memoir Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song, and that soundtrack was my jaaaam in 5th grade! I actually did a Dubsmash of one of the songs not too long ago either (watch me make a fool of myself here). Looking back on it, it really shouldn’t have been because it’s about a young prostitute who falls in love with a G.I. during the Vietnam War and Jonathan Price plays a pimp called The Engineer, and in the opening number it’s basically about how all the men are thirsty as fuck and how there’s a bevy sexy Vietnamese hookers they can get with. But I digress.

I was so excited to hear that Sara Bareilles was coming out with a memoir because I love her music SO MUCH. It took awhile for it to come out, but it just came out last month! Sara is one of those artists who gives me crazy “Killing Me Softly” vibes because it basically feels like she’s telling my whole life with her words (haaa… see what I did there?). Her first album Little Voice came out a few months after me and my first boyfriend broke up, and it consoled me while I wallowed away in self pity. During that time, my appreciation for music grew ten-fold as I finally felt like I connected to certain songs on a whole new level. Sara’s music really spoke to me at that time, and it still does. She was there for me again with her second album Kaleidoscope Heart when I was frustrated with being an undergrad with no sense of direction, and how I was trying to get over some stupid guy I knew wasn’t right for me. “Let the Rain,” “Uncharted,” and “Gonna Get Over You” were on constant repeat. “Let the Rain” and “Uncharted” are still applicable to this chapter in my life.

If I were to create a soundtrack to my life, 50% of the songs would probably be hers… or 95% if I didn’t feel the need to include other artists for the sake of diversity.

Reading her book felt very much like having a long heart felt conversation with a good friend, like the kind where you sit and listen while the other party confides in you. She writes about how she was teased for being “chubby” in elementary school and how it took a toll on her self confidence. While reading it, it made me recall old emotional wounds that were bestowed from the bullying I endured during my formative years. Sara also talks about her issues with anxiety and times when she constantly worried and was filled with self doubt. Even in essay form, I felt overwhelmed with emotion by her words. As silly as it sounds, I felt more of connection to her because while her songs tell a story and emote a certain feeling, essays feel so much more vulnerable to me, and she put herself out there in the 8 essays that this book is made of. In the introduction, she explains how it took her over 2 years to complete this book because “It feels infinitely more vulnerable to speak about life without the metaphor and mask of music or my singing voice. I had to take a look at who I am without those things.” Each essay is titled after some of her songs, and they either tell a story about how the song came to be, or something that happened in her life that is related to it.

If you’re a fan of Sara’s music, I highly recommend that you read this book if you haven’t already. 🙂

Cthulhu Calling

Some friends have showered me with compliments about how photogenic I am and have been told a few times that I should model professionally. While I find it super sweet and flattering, that just makes me just want to wave my hand dismissively whilst saying, “Me? Model? Pssssshhhh.” Growing up, I never felt pretty because I was always made fun of for the way I looked — especially because I was chubby (and obviously still am). I remember in second grade I had a crush on a boy and I was sitting next to him during lunch. My BFF at the time kept saying, “I know who Nina likes! I know who Nina likes!” And even though I insisted that she shut up, she went ahead and let it slip, and the boy let me know he did not feel the same way by dropping his eating utensils and scooting the hell away from me while saying, “Uggggh! Ugggh!” 😦

I could list more harrowing experiences from my youth that contributed to my low self-esteem, but I won’t.

Anyway, a few months ago I responded to a California open-call Sourpuss Clothing put out on Instagram to do a photoshoot for new pieces from their Fall collection. I figured, “why not?” If my friends think I have what it takes, then I should go for it. By the time they got my email they said that they had already picked out their models, BUT they liked my blog a lot and wanted to send me some of the dresses that they photographed for the shoot!  So here I am wearing one of their “Love Crafty” Cthulhu dresses they sent. 😀 I have yet to read any Cthulhu stories that H.P. Lovecraft wrote, but they’re on my infinitely long list of things to read.

Thanks for the dresses, Sourpuss! And no thank you to the boy(s) who made me feel gross and ugly. 😛
