La Valse d’Amélie

Bonjour mon petit poneys! I’m pretty sure that’s how you say “hello my little ponies” in French, but I could be wrong*. Over the weekend I was lucky enough to see the Amélie musical at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and it was all kinds of magical. It’s based on the 2001 French film of the same name which I adore completely. Amélie is definitely one of my Top 10 favorite movies and the soundtrack with Yann Tiersen’s score is the beeesssst. Amélie, both the movie and musical, is about a shy young woman with an overactive imagination living in Montmarte who begins a quest to anonymously bring joy to others by returning long lost treasures from childhood’s past or playing cupid to make their lives better, all the while struggling with her own insecurities.

So when I first heard that a musical was in the works I was both excited and skeptical. Excited because I love musicals and the movie, and skeptical because the music is one of the best parts of the movie, so how can they have a musical with original music that doesn’t involve Yann Tiersen?!

All doubt flew out the window though because, like I said, this musical was magical. MAGICAL I SAY! It still had the same spirit as the film, and I thought it translated well to the stage. Samantha Barks, who played Eponine in the film adaptation of Les Miserables, was perfection and Adam Chanler-Berat, who played Nino, had an impressive set of pipes. The whole cast was perfection, really. Berkeley Rep also showed American Idiot before it made its Broadway debut, so I’m really hoping that the Amélie musical follows in the same footsteps because it really deserves all the recognition. And I also really need the soundtrack ASAP. I’m not sure what the song was called, but it was when Nino is just right outside of Amélie’s apartment door asking if he can come in, and she’s basically saying no, but not to leave because she likes him where he is because she’s too scared to let him in — physically into her apartment and emotionally into her little bubble (there were a lot of moments that were too applicable to my own life). But uuuuggghhh… SO GOOD.

le sigh

You know me, I never miss an opportunity to dress in theme wherever I go! I noticed that on the artwork for the show, Amélie is wearing a flowing red skirt and black and white striped top. Those items just so happen to be sitting in my closet too, so I decided to wear it to the show! I also paired it with an amour-o-meter necklace I got at the Lodi Street Faire a few years ago. On one side of the necklace it has different levels of love in French, and on the other in English. I also wore my bunny earrings because in the movie, a young Amélie takes a photo of clouds shaped like a bunny (and there were also bunnies on the wallpaper of the stage at the show… coincidence?). The hair flower clip isn’t very French, but I thought the red and yellow and green color palette matched the film’s original poster.  A few people noticed I dressed like Amélie and complimented my outfit. After the show, Caitlin, myself, and her friend Megan walked over to the theatre’s bar and a woman said, “Great job tonight!” to us because she thought we were in the show. Haha! I’m assuming she had a seat on the upper level because none of us look like any of the actors in the cast, but it was still nice to be mistaken for the talent. 😀

Berkeley Rep has extended Amélie’s run until October 18, so if you find yourself anywhere near the Bay Area and you love Amélie, you MUST go! It’s totally worth it all the monies!

Aulani: a Tropical Wonderland

Going though all the snapshots I took while in Hawaii, I realized that I failed to take pictures of my hotel room. EPIC FAIL because that place was sooo nice. Auntie Nelly booked a villa for us that could fit a total of 9 people, but really there were only 6 of us: Auntie Nelly, myself, my sister, her boyfriend, my cousin Brian and his wife. Originally, I had booked us (myself, Auntie Nelly, sister, and Ryan) to stay at the Courtyard Marriott, but Auntie was like, “Babe, there’s no pool. It’s not a resort! I want to be able to relax on my vacation.” She mentioned how she wanted to stay at Aulani for at least 2 or 3 days, and my sister and I were foaming at the mouth about it. We knew that we at least wanted to book a spa appointment and go to a character breakfast if we weren’t going to stay there.

But then bippity-boppity-boo, we were suddenly booked to stay at Aulani for a whole week!!! I couldn’t stop smiling and my sister and I kept texting back and forth about how excited we were! Real talk, Auntie Nelly is my fairy godmother. I wouldn’t have more than half of the things I own, or be able to experience more than half of the things I do without her guidance and support. And my love of Disney comes from Auntie Nelly too. I am so beyond grateful for her (#blesses). I aspire to be an independent baller like her one day, but I’m still trying to figure out how to do that.

Anyhow… upon arrival to Aulani we were greeted with a warm “Aloha” and given leis. Not fake flower ones that you can pick up at any ‘ol gift shop on the island, but a legit one made out of real orchids. I later learned that men were given black kukui nut leis. Fancy schmancy stuff, but I expect no less from Disney. They’re always on their A-game!

Our room was MASSIVE. Here’s a layout of what it looked like:

aulani-two-bedroom-dedicated

I shared the master suite with Auntie Nelly and the bed was SO huge that the middle section of it always looked immaculate and untouched every morning. We also had a shower with an enormous shower head that just rains on you, and huge bathtub with jets!! I was determined to find a Lush store to buy a bubble bar to make use of the bathtub. We also had a nice kitchen and a washer and dryer. It was like living in a super swanky condo for a whole week.

Aulani has a fantastic pool area with a lazy river, a coral reef snorkeling area, pools designated for guests 18+, and a private beach where you can paddle board. I only went to the lazy river and beach, but Auntie Nelly rented a cabana for a day and a bunch of my family just hung out there. There’s also a few food places around the pool area including a place where you can get Dole Whip for $4. For one thing, that’s the price of a churro at Disneyland, but the kicker is that you get a cup and you can fill it up with as much Dole Whip as your heart desires. AND they have a swirl option so you can have a Dole Whip creamsicle.

WHY ISN’T THIS AT DISNEYLAND?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Aulani also has a gym that’s open 24/7. I only got to use it twice, but I mean… twice is pretty good considering that I was on vacation. And their spa, Laniwai, was probably my favorite part of the resort! They have you show up an hour before your appointment so you can enjoy the amenities such as their outdoor hot tubs (there’s one specifically for women, one that has jets, and one that’s just just a small pool filled with water at 105°), multiple shower heads (that poor hot water all over you), and a little pool filled water at 45°… apparently that’s good for circulation and recommended to take a dip in before a massage. I just had a facial done because I’m too ticklish for a full body massage.

The facial was FANTASTIC. The woman was like, “If you put your hair down, I can massage your scalp” and I like, “Awwww yiisssss, mother flippin’ scalp massage!” I didn’t say that out loud, but I think my noggin is the only place where I enjoy getting massaged. She also massaged my shoulders which felt nice too, so I guess I don’t mind that either. For the facial, she asked if I had any concerns with my skin and I mentioned the pesky blackheads on my nose. So she shined a bright light on my face to examine it and proceeded to do an extraction. Have any of you ever had an extraction done? If you haven’t, it feels like someone is digging their fingernail into your skin really, really, hard. That was the least relaxing bit, but I loved everything else about it. Like, getting your face and chest wrapped in a hot towel felt soooo good and my face felt so fresh and so clean. Afterwards, I just hung around until the place closed to get more use of the amenities, like the steam room and sauna. Hanging out in a steam room with a cold towel on your face is something I highly recommend.

I WANT TO GO BACK. Stick around the blog, because I’m not done talking about Hawaii yet!

You’ve Got Me in Stitches

I can’t believe how quickly my Hawaiian holiday passed by. And now it’s Monday, which means it’s back to reality. All together now: BLUUUUUGGHHH.

Despite the mosquitos and the endless tummy aches from all the sweets I ate, I really didn’t want my vacation to end. Staying at Disney’s Aulani resort was probably the most luxe experience I’ve had to date! I’ll talk more about that later though. Last Monday, a bunch of my family members got to go to Aulani’s character breakfast at Makahiki! It’s similar to Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel which I went to back in January. We got to take pictures with Mickey, and Goofy and Minnie walked around the restaurant to take pictures with diners. I was hoping Stitch would be there since my sister Disneybounded as Lilo’s doll Scrump and I wore my Stitch ears and Hawaiian Stitch dress that I got at Hot Topic earlier this year specifically for this trip! We did run into him at the wooden Stitch statue though and he was so surprised to see my Stitch ears and started playing with them. But we didn’t get to take pictures with him because a cast member was escorting him to go somewhere else.

heavy sigh

Uuuuggghh… I wanna go back! It’s seriously so fantastic and magical over there. And the food at the breakfast… oh my gaaaawwwwd. I love Disneyland food, so naturally the food at the breakfast buffet was all kinds of deloycious! They had Stitch waffles, pulled pork, miso soup, tons of pastries with tropical fruits… I seriously considered smuggling some guava pastries into my purse because they were that good.

I’ll be sharing more of my adventures from my Hawaiian Holiday, so stay tuned!

Punch It, Chewie!

Aloha, my little ponies! Hawaii has been pretty damn amazing… except for the millions of mosquito bites I have acquired. Ugh! The mosquitos here can go to hell and die. Other than that, I’ve been having lots of fun with my family! Last weekend I got to attend my cousin Amanda’s wedding to her longtime boyfriend Nick. I’ve never cried or gotten emotional at a wedding, but something about their’s made me ruin my makeup a little bit. I’m so happy for the two of them since this wedding was a long time coming! I jokingly refer to Nick as the big brother I never wanted because he likes to annoy me on purpose and I him. Now all the pressure is on my sister’s boyfriend of nearly 13 years. She even caught the bouquet, so the pressure is even more real. Haha! Sorry, Ryan!

I originally was going to wear this really pretty dress from Heart of Haute with hydrangeas all over it with a black pair of ballet flats, but the weather here has been pouring rain on and off AND it’s also been freakin’ hot and humid. I actually wore this outfit the day before exploring the North Shore and thought it might be better to wear, and it was. –Phew

And you might have noticed that I threw in some Star Wars accessories with this ensemble too. ☺

The teals and blues of the Millennium Falcon belt I got at Hot Topic matched the teal dress I got from the Old Navy outlet in Livermore, and floral things + sci-fi is mah thang, so pairing it with this cover up I originally got to wear poolside was a no-brainer. I didn’t even mean to pack my Chewbacca ring, but I found him in my carryon as I was unpacking at the hotel. If that’s not kismet, I don’t know what is. The Darth Vader purse by Loungefly was also going to be used with the outfit I intended to wear, but it works with this one too! It looks like it’s small, but it actually holds quite a few things! I was able to stuff my lipstick, chapstick, battery charger + chord, little wallet, my phone, and BB-8 Funko and Stitch Tsum Tsum into it. It’s easily become my new favorite accessory!

Now that I think about it, nearly everything I wore to the wedding was purchased at the outlet in Livermore just a few days before I flew to Hawaii. Hooray for last minute shopping!

I head back to California on Thursday, so for now I’m just going to enjoy the rest of my vacation. More blog posts about Hawaii to come sometime after! But you can follow my Hawaiian Holiday on Instagram if you’d like to see what I’m up to. ☺

Under da Sea

The title of this blog post is somewhat misleading because I am completely the opposite of being under the sea. Right now, I’m up in the air on my way to Hawaii! Or maybe I’ve already landed. I don’t know. Hawaii is 3 hours ahead of my usual time, and I suck at even the most basic of math problems so trying to figure out where exactly I am at this very moment is giving me a headache. Anyhow, I’m really excited since I haven’t been to Hawaii since I was 15. My cousin is getting married this weekend on Oahu, but I’ll be staying there for a whole week. Weeee!!!

Tropical locations aren’t completely my thing (yes, I know I’m weird), but we’re staying at Aulani! Disney magic all day, every day!!! Y’know what I’m sayin’? I am going to be eating ALL THE DOLE WHIP.

Since today is Thursday, I decided to post a little throwback outfit to something I wore to Disney’s California Adventure last month. My dress has silhouettes of Ariel all over it and I just added my crinoline to give it some extra oomph. Now that I think about it, it probably would’ve been better if I wore a lavender cardigan and my orange-y/yellow flower clip to emulate Ariel’s color palette more. But oh well! I like the way this ensemble turned out, and I think it’s pretty clear that it’s an Ariel Disneybound outfit, right?

I also packed this outfit for Hawaii sans the crinoline —  I heard that it’s kinda rainy and hot (uuggghh) so I think I would be insanely uncomfortable if I walked around wearing it. Don’t be surprised if you see it on the blog again!

I’m bringing my laptop with me since I still have to work on things for Wear Your Voice Mag, but I’m not sure if I’ll be updating the blog throughout the week. I’mma be on vacation afterall! You can count on me to upload tons of pictures on Instagram though. If you don’t follow me on there yet, you can find me via @lefancygeek. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!

Force Friday Haul

Force Friday has come and gone, and now the countdown for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has entered the double digits! 99 MORE DAYS UNTIL WE GET OUR MINDS METAPHORICALLY BLOWN LIKE ALDERAAN… errr, I mean… too soon?

My Force Friday was crazy busy. I’ve never done anything like this before, so I was really excited!! At first I didn’t think I was going to go, but I casually mentioned it to Jen, not even trying to ask her if she wanted to go, and then she asked, “Which Target do you want to go to?” #bestestbff

Jen and I went to the Target in Elk Grove around 10 pm-ish or so since the one in Stockton wasn’t holding a midnight release for new merch. My main goal was to get anything Captain Phasma and BB-8. Obviously, I know nothing about the two except for the fact that Captain Phasma is a mother flippin’ FEMALE Stormtrooper played by the goddess that is Gwendoline Christie and I feel like those two things alone make her fierce as hell. And BB-8 is stupid adorable. Why wouldn’t I want anything with his mug on it?

Target was pretty organized with its midnight Force Friday event. They told all customers that they could only take one of each item, that way everyone had a chance to buy something — although I didn’t get any of the little action figures or Black Series figures that I wanted. I saw Funko Pops! across the way, but there were 3 huge bikes and a display obstructing my path, but I managed to get through and grab the second to the last Captain Phasma. PHEW! With every purchase customers were given a re-usable tote. I got a BB-8 one!

They were also giving away 3 big ass Chewbacca plushies that you could totally spoon. I was really irritated with the last man who won because you could totally tell he wasn’t a fan. He was probably just there to buy the toys and make a profit off of them on EVILbay eBay. He wasn’t excited AT ALL to have won. I mean, he could’ve at least pretended! — insert angry emoji with steam coming out of the nose

We also went to the Disney Store in Modesto when it opened at 8am so we could get the free pin with purchase! There was another dude there that had no chill whatsoever. He was carrying a big pile of the Elite die cast exclusives and then I saw him accidentally knock over a little girl, and didn’t even apologize! WTF, man? Anyway, we headed to the Target over there to get breakfast and check to see if they had the Star Wars Cover Girl make-up before heading to San Francisco (Jen started school that day, so no, we didn’t just go for Force Friday) and to check out any of the other merchandise they might have left over.

I ended up having buyer’s remorse over the graham crackers

Things I got:

  • Captain Phasma Funko Pop! vinyl
  • BB-8 Funko Pop! vinyl
  • Rey Funko Pop! vinyl
  • Captain Phasma die cast Disney Store exclusive
  • Rey & BB-8 die cast Disney Store exclusive
  • Darth Vader pullover by Fifth Sun
  • Disney Store re-usable bag
  • Disney Store exclusive Force Friday pin
  • Star Wars the Force Awakens poster (not pictured)
  • Stormtrooper mug (didn’t actually buy it on Force Friday, but whatever)
  • Red Light Saber keychain (not pictured)

I was super bummed about not finding a BB-8 Funko, but then I had the brilliant idea to call Barnes & Noble and ask to put 2 on hold — one for me and one for my sister. We got there 15 minutes before closing only to find that they didn’t put them on hold for me AT ALL. Apparently whoever was supposed to put them on hold didn’t print out a paper with my name and number on it, or at least write my info on a sticky note and place it on the items that were supposed to go on hold. I used to work there and placed things on hold for customers quite often. I know how things are supposed to go, so I was livid. Thankfully, there were 2 left on the display (the ones that were supposed to be for me). I really didn’t want to be that customer to go apeshit on an employee, but… y’know. Put things on hold properly, man!

And before Jen went to school we stopped by the Disney Store in downtown San Francisco and they were still giving away The Force Awakens posters! I also bought a little red Light Saber keychain to put on my purse because why not? ☺

Overall, the Force seemed to be quite strong with me on Force Friday. Did any of you participate in Force Friday? What kind of stuff did you get (or not get)? Lemme know in the comments!

cheers

I Sense a Disturbance in My Wallet

Happy Force Friday to all my little tauntauns!!! I know I usually call you all my little ponies, but for Star Wars related things I will refer to you as my little tauntauns. ☺

It’s not quite Force Friday in California yet, but I know it’s happening for some of you already! I AM SO EXCITED FOR ALL THE NEW MERCH. Jen and I are heading over to Target in either Elk Grove or Modesto in hopes of picking up a few pieces from the new Cover Girl Star Wars collection (I mainly just want a couple lipsticks), and I also want a BB-8 and Captain Phasma action figure. If there’s any General Hux stuff I will want that too because Domhnall Gleeson. ♡♥♡

fingers crosses

I’m really anxious to see what Her Universe and Hot Topic come out with, but at the same time I’ve been sensing a great disturbance in my wallet. Uurrrrgggghhh. I can’t go spending all my monies on Star Wars stuff, especially since I’m going to be in Hawaii from the 10th t0 the 17th! Oh, and Fifth Sun (who is sponsoring a giveaway for 2 of you guys to win a geeky tank which ends tomorrow @ 11:59pm PST BTW) is having a labor day sale AND they’re coming out with new Star Wars tees and tanks. We Love Fine and Lounge Fly also showed a few new things they’re releasing including a cowl neck Sith dress (my sister got the Jedi one at SDCC and it’s super cute!), and BB-8 and Captain Phasma bowler bags. Whhhhhyyyy?!

crying because I can’t get ALL THE THINGS

Anyhow, in honor of Force Friday here’s a Darth Vader inspired outfit I threw together! On Wednesdays my friend Brianna and I decided to start wearing Star Wars themed outfits and are calling it “Wookiee Wednesday.” We used to do it on Tuesdays, but since we don’t see each other at work on Tuesdays anymore we had to settle for a different day. Neither of us discussed nor reminded each other to wear a Star Wars outfit yesterday and low and behold, we both ended up wearing Darth Vader tops (technically my top is a dress, but whatever), cardigans, flared black skirts, and a braided metallic leather belt. Like… WTF? When I walked into work and saw her outfit I just looked at her and said, “Are you f*cking serious?” Her and I come to work dressing in similar outfits 95.5% of the time, it’s not even funny. It’s scary. We’re 85% sure that an experiment was done on babies born in the late ’80s that somehow made their brainwaves in sync like Lance Bass and Joey Fatone.

I hope you all have a magical Force Friday and that you get all the cool stuff that you want! Speaking of which, what’s on your must-have list? Geek out with me and tell me in the comments section!
