Last Saturday I headed to the Doctor Who Fan Meet-Up in San Diego! I was daunted by the fact that I would be going solo (my sister and her boyfriend aren’t into Doctor Who and none of my other friends who like Who were there) as I am terribly shy in many social situations. So why did I go? Well, at last year’s Who meet-up, Matt Smith, Karen, Gillan, and Arthur Darvill randomly showed up and I figured the same case would go for this year. I had already missed the Nerd HQ ticket sales for the Doctor Who panel, and I didn’t feel like camping outside of Hall H to get into their Sunday panel, thus I figured going to this shindig would definitely increase my chance of getting to see my favorite Doctor in person, and possibly even meet him! The latter I didn’t do, but the former I did! But more on that in a bit. BBC set up a sweet little party for us Whovians and provided us with sliders and cupcakes adorned with the TARDIS. And thank goodness, because I was waiting in line for two hours and was STARVING. So yay for cuppy cakes and sliders! There were a couple Cybermen and an Ood walking around as well which was totally amazing! And there were lots of great cosplays going on as well. I think the best one I saw was a freakin’ TARDIS [picture below] — it lit up and everything!
There was a cosplay theater contest where a couple of cosplayers got onstage and did a little scene from the show and Mark Gatiss and Filch David Bradley came out as celebrity judges! My inner teeny-bopper kicked into gear as I attempted to work my way to the other side of the second level after I saw them head upstairs in hopes to take a better picture of (and maybe even meet) them. It was way too crowded though. Did I mention that the line for the meet-up was like two or three blocks long? Needless to say the place was packed!
So while I was working on my second slider, I heard a familiar voice say “hello” and then all hell broke loose. Suddenly it felt like it was 1999 — the year I went to my first *NSYNC concert — fangirls wailed and I immediately made a beeline downstairs to head to the back of the club to get a better look because I KNEW it was Matt Smith! Him, Jenna Coleman, and Steven Moffat were onstage and stayed there for about 10 minutes. They said thanks for coming and all that good stuff. Like I said, my inner teeny-bopper was alive and kicking so my thought process was, “OH MY GOD I’M BREATHING THE SAME AIR AS THEM.” Oh, and Jenna Coleman is ridiculously gorgeous in person. It’s really not fair how beautiful she is. I kept telling Tim over the phone how stupid pretty she was in person!
So, that was my little bit of Who during Comic-Con! Were you there too?
Cheers,
Nina

It was most definitely awesome! I would’ve had a lot more fun if I was actually there with friends though.

I’m presently undertaking the ultimate Doctor Who marathon in which I watch every episode broadcast, in chronological order, and then blog about it. You can check out my blog at http://doctorwhomindrobber.wordpress.com/
