All the Pretty Horses

outfit details – dress + belt: Xhileration (buy dress here) // boots: Charles Albert // watch: Timex x Disney // glasses: Brooks Brothers (buy here) // necklace: Authored Adornments (buy here)

Yesterday was a bit of a rarity as I had the ENTIRE day off! Rather than sleeping in and bumming it up at home, I hit the road bright and early to visit Tim at his new casa (which is an hour and 20 minutes away from me)!! We hadn’t seen each other in what feels like months, rather than weeks, since our free time never matches up to allow either one of us to make the drive to visit the other, so yesterday was completely amazing and much needed! 😀

Tim told me there were tons of country roads with lots of places that would look cool for an outfit post, so I dressed for the occasion with my black and white horse dress from Target (damn you, Target and all your adorable clothes). While driving down the road we tried to find horses to be in the background, but all we saw were cows. Also, to change things up I wore my Brooks Brothers glasses that have been M.I.A. since October! I found them a few days ago when I was setting my bed up on bed lifters. And my necklace is from Authored Adornments. Does it look familiar? I had it on my wish list last Christmas (seen here), and I decided to take matters into my own hands and buy it for myself! It contains a line from John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars which says, “I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.” Swoon.

BTW, Krysten of Authored Adornments has shared a code for me and all my lovely readers to use to get 10% off an order! Just use the code BOOKSHOP.

Tim and I did the usual stuff we do when we’re together — eat (we went to Jimboys for lunch and Smashburger for dinner), go to Target (it’s the go-to thing for when we wanna go out but don’t know what to do), do an outfit photo shoot for my blog, watch TV shows and YouTube videos (I brought season 1 of Chuck with me in hopes that I could convert him into a fan), talk about random stuffs, nap, and cuddle. ❤

Sorry I’m not sorry for the partial mushiness of this post. I  love my boyfriend a helluva f*ckin’ lot x infinity & beyond then some, and I’m really proud of us for making this whole long distance bidness work. And that’s all I shall say about that since I gotta keep some things private, y’know? 😉

Cheers,
Nina

Wishful Wednesdays: #1

Constantly being on the interwebz for blog purposes also leads me to do some hardcore “window shopping” and I always find myself pinning things to Pinterest and Favery to take note of the items I desire most. I thought, “why not have a series of things I covet?” Thus, Wishful Wednesdays! I know, not the most clever title. This might be an every other week kind of a series. Or just when I happen to want tons of things all at once. Or something like that. Anywho, on with the stuff!

1. Kurt Halsey x Art Star Philly “Dear Friend” necklace

I have an affinity for deer and I love the art of Kurt Halsey (he just might be the next artist I feature on Curator’s Corner :)), so it’s only natural for me to pine over this necklace, right? Art Star Philly had an Instagram giveaway for two of them but I missed it! That’s what I get for being out of the loop. *wah wah wah*

2. 127 Flowers Dress from ModCloth

If you look in my closet, you’ll see that 90% of my dresses are floral print. This mint dress with pink and peach roses is perfect for spring and I’m contemplating on whether I should save up a few paychecks so I can get it for my cousin’s wedding next month. This is appropriate for a wedding… I think? It’s going to be in SoCal and I do believe the ceremony is going to be outdoors. Maybe it’s more of a tea party dress though. I guess that means I’m going to have to throw a tea party and that will justify my pending purchase of this dress. Yeah? Yeah. I knew you’d agree. 😉

3. Unicorn sweater by Skip ‘N Whistle

Skip ‘N Whistle has some of the most clever duds. My family wore coordinating tacky Christmas sweaters by them during the holiday season (seen here) and we easily won the Best Dressed Family On Christmas award. I made that award up, but we won, so don’t even try to argue with me! This lightweight sweater features a vintage looking unicorn design that looks like it should be plastered on velvet and placed in an ornate gold frame. Right?! I have a penchant for the delightfully tacky. And luckily for us, this piece of art is wearable and not on velvet (I’ll wear a velvet dress, but not a sweater. The line’s gotta be drawn somewhere)!

4. Cat Eye frames from the Derek Cardigan Grammar Collection

You can’t really tell from the picture, but these glasses have a colon on one side and a semicolon on the other. HOW EFFING PERFECT IS THAT??? When I first saw the Derek Cardigan Grammar Collection I fangirled so hard and have been drooling over these glasses for months. I have a pair of wayfarers from their regular line that have mathmatical symbols, and I loathe that subject, but those glasses were too awesome, so I set my hatred for all things math aside.  Of course seeing a pair of glasses with symbols that I give a sh!t about is ridiculously exciting! For new readers, I majored in Creative Writing. Just thought I’d throw that out there in case you’re wondering why I’m so damn passionate about colons and semicolons. : ; ; : ; ; : ; ; : : ; : ; <– semicolon and colon par-tay! Honestly though, I’m a bigger fan of the double dash when I write — that’s just my preference. BTW – coastal.com is having a sale on their designer glasses and the Grammar Collection is available there! Use the code EXTRA50 to get half off of your glasses. But HURRY, you have until April 30!

5. Thranduil v-neck shirt by Cloud & Victory

I came across Cloud & Victory after they started following me on Tumblr awhile ago. They have the wittiest t-shirts with ballerinas, and characters from The Hobbit, Downton Abbey, and Game of Thrones. Since the image is so tiny, you can’t really see all the amazingness of their Thranduil shirt. My apologies. But it has Lee Pace as the racist elf king wearing a fine pair of pink stunna shades, a lavender Birkin draped in the crook of his arm, and it says “Get In Loser, We’re Going Shopping.” The Hobbit x Mean Girls. LOVE IT!  Which reminds me, it’s Wednesday. That means I should wear pink, otherwise I can’t sit at the table with the cool kids. D:

6. Melie Bianco “Nina” bag

Not gonna lie. My main reason for lusting over this faux ostrich Melie Bianco bag is because it’s called “Nina.” No, it’s not named after me, but for someone whose name isn’t very common and can’t be found on souvenir name keychains (what the hell, Disneyland? Y U NO have my name anymore?!), it’s a really exciting thing to see an adorable product that bears the same name as you! And it has a little bow, and as we all know bows are cool. Specifically bow ties, but whatever.

What items are you guys wishing for?

Cheers,
Nina

LeSportsac: It’s a Small World Bag Review

I’ve been holding out on some exciting news from you guys, but I’m ready to share it!

A couple of weeks ago the fine folks of LeSportsac contacted me and asked me if I could write a review AND host a giveaway on my blog for their spring line of It’s a Small World bags! When I first found out about this collaboration last year I flipped out because I’ve been a longtime fan of both Disney and LeSportsac (the very first expensive bag I bought myself was from their collaboration with Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. line and my LeSportsac collection snow balled from there!), plus It’s a Small World has always been one of my favorite attractions at Disneyland since I was a little girl. So when I was approached by them to review a couple of bags for this particular line I did a little happy dance around my room! 😀

I’ll be giving more details about the giveaway tomorrow (and one of them will be filled with a bunch of special goodies in honor of my upcoming 2 year blogaversary!), but for now here’s my review of a couple of their super cute bags!

The Classic Hobo is not too big and not too small — it’s just right. <– that was so Goldilocks of me. Anyhow, I was able to stick my wallet, make-up bag, planner, a pack of gum, hand sanitizer, and a Cliff Bar, and there was still a bit of room to spare for a few other little things. This is the perfect kind of bag to take on the go — whether you’re hanging out with some friends, going to a concert, running errands, or heading to work. And I love the fact that you can adjust the strap, so you can wear it as a crossbody bag or over the shoulder.

The print of the bag is called “Share Your Dreams” and it features a bunch of little embroidered iconic landmarks from different nations and a charm that has the face from the tower of the attraction. I’m a HUGE fan of Mary Blair, the artist who designed It’s a Small World, and I think that LeSportsac did a lovely job at paying homage to her incredibly adorable iconic designs. It also came with a little pouch that can double as a little makeup bag (but I forgot to take a picture of it. D’oh)!

The other bag I really liked was the Carryall Tote. And true to its name, it really can carry all!

I was able to fit all the items I listed above in the Classic Hobo, along with my bulky Canon SX50 and iPad, and there was definitely room for even more! This tote is ideal for the kind of girl that likes to carry tons of things with her. It can also fit my 13 inch laptop, a water bottle, etc. I think this is the kind of bag I’d take along with me for travel purposes or if I find myself leaving the house to work on my blog elsewhere, that way I can take my camera and laptop with me. It’s also PERFECT for a trip to Disneyland! It’ll hold all the bare necesseties (I’m sorry, that was cheesy) and you can even fit snackies and little souvenirs in case you go shopping in between going on rides and eating Pineapple Dole Whips.

Stay tuned to find out how you can win your very own It’s a Small World purse on tomorrow’s post!

Cheers,
Nina

11 Questions, 11 Answers

Hey all! Kristin at My Life as a Teacup tagged me to answer 11 questions a loooooong time ago, so since I actually have time to sit and breathe I thought now would be the perfect time to FINALLY answer her questions 🙂

Kristin’s Questions:

1. If you were given a one-way plane ticket, where would you go?:
I want to say Paris just because… y’know it’s Paris AND they have a super fancy Disneyland there, but I think I’d want a one-way ticket to Portland, OR. I haven’t been there since I was in diapers, but soooooo many people have told me that I’d totally love it there and from what I’ve heard I think I would. 🙂

2. What’s the first thing you do once you wake up in the morning?:
I check my emails and Instagram feed on my phone. x__x

3. If you could go back to live in any time period or era, which would you choose?:
I’m totally content with living in the 21st century with all our advanced technologies and plumbing systems and the fact that most of the population are tolerant towards interracial relationships (people would be looking at me funny in the 60s with my white beau, can you imagine?!). But if I could travel back via the TARDIS I’d love the visit the late 70s/early 80s and watch a Queen concert. Freddie Mercury FOREVER! I’d also love to see The Police ❤

4. Who’s your literary character crush?
I liked Edward Cullen for a minute, but then I realized he’s a super creepy possessive stalker douchebag that would be terrible at spooning on account of the fact that his body is supposed to be as hard as marble. Seriously WTF, Bella? I had a bit of a thing for Robert Langdon from Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code since I pictured him as an Indiana Jones type, but then Tom Hanks kind of ruined it for me. Sorry, Hanx. I love you! You are my favorite actor, but you just weren’t what I pictured for my dreamy professor! But as far as fictional characters in the realm of TV and movies go, I love me some Ned the Pie Maker from Pushing Daisies. He’s adorable, sweet, and he can bake pies for you. What. Is. Up.

5. What is one challenge that initially terrified you, but you persevered through to overcome?
I landed my very first retail gig about a month ago, and for the sake of anonymity and not getting in trouble with the company I won’t say what store I work at, but the thought of being a cashier has ALWAYS freaked me out. By now I’ve been at the register so many times and I’m pretty used to it. There are moments where I have brain farts with counting change and then I feel terrible about it, but it’s really not as horrible as I thought it would be. Plus some customers have told me I’m a good salesperson, so YAY!

6. Tell me a story about the most cherished of your senses (a particular memory tied to the scent of baking gingerbread, a sound that strikes fear into your heart, be creative!)

I don’t think I have an exact memory of a certain sense, but I do find the smell of chlorine quite pleasant. It can be an obnoxious scent at times, but it reminds me of all the times I spent swimming in the pool as a kid and it also reminds me of Disneyland! It’s just a scent that I connect with good times from days gone by.

7. What is one movie/show/book/video game that you’re looking forward to seeing/reading/playing in 2013?
Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary special!!! I can’t wait to see how Rose Tyler and the 10th Doctor will be incorporated. David Tennant was a fantastic Doctor, so it’s definitely going to be a treat for all Whovians to see him don his striped suit and white Chucks once more 🙂

8. Favorite pancake flavor? (I’m partial to blueberry!)
I’m more of a waffle person, they’re like pancakes but with more depth (literally!). Belgian waffles with strawberries and whipped cream has been a tried and true favorite since I was a kid!

9. What is the last book you read?
I honestly can’t even remember — possibly An Abundance of Katherines or The Catcher in the Rye (which was eons ago a.k.a. sometime last year). I’ve started a few books, but have yet to pick them back up. My mind keeps wandering whenever I attempt to read. I don’t know why it’s so hard for me to focus now, and I REALLY hate it! Perhaps I should look into audiobooks…?

10. Who would you choose to play you in a movie of your life?
I don’t know what actress looks like me. My friend Shanice said she’d cast Lindsay Price to play me in a movie. But maybe America Ferrera? The make-up people would have to do her eye makeup to make her look Asian though. And Tom Hiddleston would play my boyfriend because my boyfriend quasi resembles him. 😀

11. If you had to choose a single word to serve as a focus or goal for 2013, which would it be?
“Forward,” because I need to keep moving in that direction.

My questions:

  1. Who is your favorite Disney princess and why? We all have one, so don’t dare say you don’t!
  2. What song must you play at full blast and sing along to in the car?
  3. What’s your poison? (I stick to water for the most part, but I do love me some Root Beer)
  4. What’s your favorite kind of dessert?
  5. If Ben & Jerry made a namesake ice cream for you like 30 Rock‘s Liz Lemon, what ingredients would you want them to include in it?
  6. If you knew you were dying tomorrow what would be your last meal? (I’m so hungry, can you tell by my questions?)
  7. What is your most prized possession?
  8. What are you currently obsessed with? (movie, tv show, book, music etc)
  9. What movie can you recite word for word (or at least 85% of)?
  10. Are there any fashion trends you fell victim to that you immensely regret? (I rocked a vinyl mini backpack and short sleeve velvet turtlenecks, but it was the 90s and I was 10 so I guess it’s okay…?)
  11. Say we’re living in the realm of Harry Potter and you are a witch — what would your patronus be and why? If you’re not into Harry Potter (but seriously, why wouldn’t you be?!) what/who would your spirit animal be and why?

I tag:

Cheers,
Nina

Curator’s Corner #3: Freddy Scribbles

I stumbled upon the art of Autumm Fredrickson, who goes by the moniker Freddy Scribbles, at Stockton Con last December. I was on the upper level looking below and saw someone flipping though her portfolio and was immediately drawn to the most adorable little print of Loki and I had to have it! It’s currently hanging above my bed 🙂 Freddy Scribbles art consists of many beloved characters from nerd culture — not only does she have the cutest Loki print, but she has all of the Avengers (even Nick Fury and Phil Coulson)! She also makes plushies called Cubies (kyoo-bees) and currently has The Hulk, Thor, Harley Quinn, and some Avengers keychains available in her store (pictured below).

I hope you all enjoy the art of Freddy Scribbles! Be prepared to say “awww!” 😀

Iron Man
Hawkeye and Black Widow
Captain America
Thor and Loki
The Hulk
Phil Coulson and Nick Fury
Hulk and Thor Cubies
White Phoenix
Vanellope Von Schweetz
Death and Delirium from Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman”

outfit details – cardigan: Forever 21 // Gryffindor patch: from Comic Con (buy similar here) // shirt: Teefury (buy similar here) // belt: Merona // skirt: Xhileration // ring: from Target // gold bow: H&M // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here) // shoes: Blowfish

I can’t help but feel like a bit of a phony when I wear my Gryffindor cardigan since I was sorted into Hufflepuff  on Pottermore (whut whuuut!), but in my defense my sister bought the patch for me when she went to Comic Con for the first time (that was 10 years ago!), and then I sewed it onto my cardigan so I could dress up like a Hogwarts schoolgirl for the last Harry Potter movie (see here) — all that happened waaay before Pottermore! Besides, it totally goes with my hella awesome Hermione Granger shirt that I just bought from Teefury!!!

If the design looks familiar, it’s by Megan Lara who I featured in my Curator’s Corner series not too long ago. Oh, and her Luna Lovegood design is currently available on Teefury as well. Oh my glob, just take all monies, Megan (and Teefury)!

I’m so glad Friday’s payday. ACCIO MONIES!

Bidness Casual

outfit details dress: BCX (buy here) // cardigan: Gap // necklace: Once Upon a Smorgasbord (similar here) // watch: Timex x Disney // bracelet: Coach // belt: made by me in 7th grade! // shoes: Big Buddha // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here)

Now that I’m working in a retail environment where employees are supposed to be dressed in “business casual” attire, I’m finding myself struggling to find outfits to wear to work! I have tons of dresses, but y’know me — I like fun dresses and a lot of them have short hemlines that are more appropriate for the likes of H&M or Forever 21 (or maybe just my outfit posts?). Last week I nearly wore this outfit to work, but I brought a pair of black nylons and my Dirty Laundry boots to change into at Tim’s house just in case!

This blue BCX dress I got for Dapper Day at Disneyland (seen here) has become an instant favorite of mine since I’m finding that it’s sooo versatile and ideal for remixing! I’ve worn it at least five other times since Disneyland, so don’t be surprised if you see it pop up every now and then on any future outfit posts. 🙂

The belt I’m wearing is actually something I made in a leather working class I took as an elective course in 7th grade… which was 15 years ago (HOLY CRAP)! I’ll admit, my sister took that same class a couple years before me and made a black belt with stars and crescent moons and I totally bit her style when I made mine. If I were to take that class again, I’d probably make a belt with unicorns and flowers on it!

So I know I mentioned that I wore this outfit to work and that I’m supposed to wear “business casual” clothes, and clearly I’m kind of pushing it with my accessories — like who wears a chunky My Little Pony necklace to work? I don’t want to look like some boring sales clerk though! Until one of my managers say something, I’m gonna keep it “bidness casual” with flair!

Cheers,
Nina

Curator’s Corner #2: Nan Lawson

I don’t quite remember how I came across the art of Nan Lawson (I think it might’ve been a random Etsy find), but I just remember immediately falling in love with it! She’s very well known for her super quirky/nerdy art style and pop culture pieces from the likes of Harry Potter, Star Wars, Downton Abbey (I used her Lady Mary shirt in my Thoroughly Modern Mary post awhile ago), The Avengers, Doctor Who, Wes Anderson, etc. The Academy Awards also commissioned her earlier this year to create some pieces for their website of iconic cinematic couples for Valentine’s Day that people could send as virtual greetings (The Sound of Music and Gone With the Wind are pictured below). Nan’s work has also appeared in Timeout New York, Zooey Magazine, GadChick, and art galleries such as Gallery 1988.

I hope you all enjoy her work just as much as I do! Be sure to check out where to follow her on the interwebs and buy her prints, t-shirts, and other thing-a-ma-bobs at the end of the post. 🙂

The Snow Show

outfit details – skirt + hairbow: H&M // blazer: Living Doll (Crossroads Trading Co. find) // dress: BeBop // belt: Xhileration // boots: Steve Madden // necklace: Once Upon a Smorgasbord (buy similar here) // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here)

Since Tim and I both had Monday off, we headed to the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco to check out the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The Creation of a Classic exhibit. The show consisted of original concept art from the film and I’m such a nerd for that kind of stuff! Well, I’m a nerd for pretty much anything Disney, but I digress. Concept art from Disney movies are absolutely stunning, so it was an amazing experience to be able to see some of these sketches up close and personal. The details on some of them are incredible — if you look close enough you can see each pencil stroke the artist did and see just how hard they pressed their pencil against the paper.

I also got to learn a few things about the film that I never even knew about (and I know a lot about Disney)! Though Snow White is a beloved classic family film, Walt Disney originally intended that the movie be for adults. He told a journalist, “Before seven or eight, a child shouldn’t be in a theater at all. But I didn’t make the picture for children. I made it for adults — for the child that exists in all adults.”

Upon learning that Snow White was originally created for adults, I now understand why it scared me sh!tless as a child! I still like to refer to Snow White as my favorite “scary movie” or “horror film.” Hell, even the ride at Disneyland scares me! In my defense, it is called Snow White’s Scary Adventure, so… yeah. I think the Evil Queen is absolutely terrifying. Her transformation scene still gives me the heebie-jeebies, and during the exhibit I learned that artists studied the the transformation of Dr. Jekyll in order to truly get the Evil Queen’s done just right.

And of course, I had to dress accordingly to our trip to the museum by wearing the Snow White necklace I made featuring concept art by Gustaf Tenggren, whose art was shown and used on the banners and posters to promote the exhibit (up-close shot of necklace pictured below). I still have a similar one available in my Etsy store 🙂

If you find yourself in San Francisco before the 14th this month, definitely make a trip down to the museum. The show is insanely gorgeous, so definitely check it out if you can!

Cheers,
Nina
