the reel world

It’s Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 eve! While I’m extremely excited that the final movie is coming out, I’m also sad because there’s nothing else to look forward to. No more books. No more movies. Pottermore is coming out at the end of the year, but it’s not the same! The end of an era is nigh. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I’m not going to the midnight show, but Jen, Shanice, and I are trekking to San Francisco to watch it at 3:30 am in IMAX 3D. Last year, when Jen and I still lived in the bay, were planning on going to the midnight show for the last HP movie, but they sold out. The next available one was at 3:30 am, so we went and it wasn’t all crazy. There were still lots of people, but they weren’t all rowdy and whatnot. So we’re doing it again!

Since this is the last hurrah, I’m dressing up like a Hogwarts student! Gryffindor to be exact. I’ll be throwing on a button-up shirt and tie later. And since I don’t have a wand, I’m just going to bring my Sonic Screwdriver (I’ll be a Timelord wizard!). Note my scarf — Jen knitted it for me! ๐Ÿ™‚

Last night I spent what seemed like an hour and a half sewing this Gryffindor patch onto my cardigan. My sister bought it for me 8 years ago at Comic Con. I’ve always meant to put it on a cardigan or blazer. Finally did so last night, and I have to say, it was a bitch. The patch is really thick, so it was hard weaving the needle in and out.

It’s 8:08 pm PST. Time for me to take a power nap before I leave for the movie!

PS: This will be me at 3:30 am…

Jen and I went to Japantown yesterday! I actually declined the invite at first because there were some things that I needed to do around the house. But then I had an emo moment and thought, “Damn, I should’ve just gone!” And then Jen called me again and asked if I was sure that I didn’t want to go, so I said, “Let me fix my hair.”And to let my parents know. Even though I’m well in my 20s, mid-20s even,ย  I still have to let my parents know where I go. That’s the price you pay when you live rent-free with your family.

I damn near forgot just how cold it is in San Francisco during the summer. I remember when I lived in Daly City, I thought the constant fogginess was amazing as I hate hot weather. But towards the end of my time in the bay area, I got a bad case of seasonal depression from lack of sunshine.

Once we got there, we were greeted with misty air which was a nice change from the central valley heat. I don’t think I can deal with that kind of weather everyday ever again though.

Anyway, I grabbed a couple of silk headbands with bows at Daiso for just $1.50 each. I haven’t taken pictures of them yet, but you’ll most likely see me wearing one of them in a post in the near future. I like to think of Daiso as a Japanese Target: they have EVERYTHING — fashion accessories, stationary, housewares, cosmetics, craft goods, snacks, etc.

I also found a cupcake place inside the Kintetsu mall called Cako Bakery. The cupcakes were really pricey ($3.50 each!), but I saw that they had a Strawberry Cheesecake one and I couldn’t resist.

I even found some Doctor Who toys inside a toy store I always frequent whenever I go to J-Town (the name of it escapes me though)! The first thing I saw was this 12 inch Clockwork Man figure, from the episode “The Girl in the Fireplace” which is one of my favorite episodes. They toys were freakishly pricey though — the Sonic Screwdriver I got on Amazon for $20 was being sold for $30, and the 11th Doctor’s screwdriver was being sold for $40. I found that Amazon not too long ago for $14.99. Even though I got really excited for spotting Who merchandise, I figured I’d wait till I go to Comic Con next week to go ape shit.

All in all, it was a good day. I’ll leave you with my “seasonal depression” face. Haha!

R.I.P. Rilo Kiley

I just found out that Rilo Kiley, MY MOST FAVORITE BAND EVER, broke up through an article on Rolling Stone. My heart hurts. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

The lead vocalist, Jenny Lewis, has been my fashion hero since my sister’s boyfriend first introduced the band to me 7 years ago. She’s the reason why I have bangs! “Silver Lining” from their last album Under the Black Light is my phone’s ringtone too.

Here are some of my favorite Rilo Kiley tunes:

“Portions for Foxes”

“Science vs. Romance”

“Paint’s Peeling”

“Silver Lining”

IT’S A TRAP! (not really)

It’s sad how delicious food from McDonalds tastes when you’re extremely hungry. This was the case yesterday after mine and Jen’s shift at SPD. Since we knew we were heading to Sacramento right after, we decided to feed our groaning bellies before the hour and half trip. I like to avoid eating at McDonalds. No matter how delicious the french fries and ice cream cones are, I feel like a pile of canine fecal matter after I consume anything from there. Blugh.

BUT, they had some pretty sweet Star Wars toys to accompany the Happy Meals! They also have Strawberry Shortcake, but I’m not a fan of the revamped version. She was so much cuter in the 80s/90s! I’m not ashamed to get kids meals — they come in small portions AND you get a toy. ๐Ÿ˜›

Anyway, we both got Yoda toys (I ended up giving mine to my mom), but then we noticed that they had given us an extra Strawberry Shortcake toy too. SCORE!ย Before Jen dropped me off at home, we stopped by another McDonalds to see if they had the little Lightsabers. She ended up going to another one and got a purple Lightsaber. o___0

I kinda thought Star Wars things were common knowledge — even if you don’t watch the films, you know the main gist of things like characters, and what Lightsabers are, etc. Last night I learned that this is not so as I heard a few employees refer to Lightsabers as “swords” and “sticks” and someone called Yoda “the green man.” I was just standing there like, “WTF? Really?”

Some people just don’t embrace their nerdiness the force.

Green, Hamm & Eggs

Yesterday I went back to SPD for the first time in a month! Something always came up, so Jen and I would have to cancel our shifts — sickness, vacation, major holidays, etc. Who knew so many holidays fell on Mondays too? We ended up working on the “Lost Books” project; it’s where we’re given a list of books in each section and we take out the ones that aren’t supposed to be there. It’s rare that you actually find any misplaced books, but I ended up spending 4 hours reorganizing tons of shelves!

Afterwards, Jen wanted to take some pictures on her fancy Pentax camera with the new filter she bought, so I took my little Rex out for a shoot. And yes, sometimes I do carry a toy in my purse. I used to do it more frequently as I liked using toys to document the places I go. I’m trying to get back into the habit, no matter how odd it may be.

I got these really cute vinyl Disney toys by Funko over the weekend when I went to Sacramento, and I told Jen about it — so she asked if we could go to Sac so she could buy Buzz Lightyear. Despite the fact that there was a Disney Store across the bridge in San Francisco, she said she didn’t want to go there (SF rush hour… eww). So off to Sac we went!

This Hamm piggy bank matched my outfit. ๐Ÿ˜€

I didn’t think I’d be indulging in my inner child sooooo much yesterday. When I got dressed in the morning, Iย  knew I wanted to wear jeans and a tee, but somehow ended up looking like a put together 8-year-old. I bought my shirt at the gift store outside of the Toy Story ride when I went to the Disney’s California Adventure. When Toy Story 3 came out last year, I was soooo excited that there was going to be aย  little unicorn! When I saw the shirt with Buttercup on it, I knew I had to have it.

Jen and I now have BFF toys! She said, “It’s perfect how my favorite is Buzz and yours is Woody: you complain a lot and I’m annoying!” It’s kind of true too. x__X

My Friday was a lot more productive than usual — I had a driving lesson with my mom’s friend, Sarem (I don’t like driving, it freaks me out, but I’m trying to get used to it as a means of necessity), then I went shopping with Shanice for a bit before she had to go to work, and then I went thrifting with my mom and her homies. She sent me a text saying to call her when I was done shopping with Shanice and then she’d take me “thrusting.” Oh, the joy that is auto correct. I will now refer to thrifting as thrusting. o___0

I managed to find a nice pair of brand new cowboy boots for $29 at Superior Thrift (the bestest thrift store in the Central Valley). And they conveniently went with my outfit! After I bought them, I immediately changed into them since the ones I was originally wearing were starting to hurt my feet. It’s really hard to find boots that fit over my calves, let alone fancy cowboy boots, so when I do find a pair that fit, I take it as a sign from the fashion gods that I must purchase them. That sounds logical, doesn’t it? I also found a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shirt for 99 cents. Whoop!

My Cupcake Adventure

While I was on vacation, my friend Jen sent me a link to a shop called Cupcake Craving in Davis, CA, a town about 45 minutes away from where I live. She called me a few times when I got back to see if I wanted to go check it out, but I was swamped with family stuff. But earlier today when I was about to go for a swim in my backyard, she called to see if I was up for a cupcake adventure. I didn’t really have any plans besides cleaning and posting things on eBay, so I said I’d go. Plus I would’ve felt bad if I said “no” again!

So, why would we travel so far away for cupcakes, you may be wondering? Well, they’re gourmet cupcakes, so why not? Jen seemed really keen on checking this place out, and I am not one to refuse a cupcake quest invitation (I only delay them by being busy with other things).

I was pretty overwhelmed with the selection they had. And they also had ice cream and milkshakes! But I stuck with my original plan: buy 2 cupcakes — a fruity one and a chocolatey one. I settled on the Strawberry Dream and Monkey Mania (pictured in the back row in the photo below), and I bought my mom Red Velvet and Dulce Deleche because I’m awesome like that. ๐Ÿ™‚

Monkey Mania was pretty effing tasty — it’s banana cake with caramel filling and cream cheese frosting, topped with a chocolate monkey.

The Strawberry dream was ridiculously pink. Like, 80s Barbie neon pink. It was quite yummy though. ๐Ÿ˜€

There are some other flavors that I’d like to try, but Tim told me I need to check out another cupcake place in Davis called Let Them Eat Cake. AH! Too many places to go. I told Jen we should also go to Teacake Bake Shop in Emeryville after our shift at SPD next week. Not only do they have delicious cupcakes, but cookies as well. I suggest the Chocolate Chunk Hazelnut cookie. SO GOOD.

I really need to watch it though. I’ve lost a lot of weight this year, and at the rate I’ve been going at with Disneyland and my grandpa’s party, I’ve been eating sweets nonstop. My body is in a bit of shock — it’s like, “WTF are you doing to me?! What is this crap?”

Sorry, body! Perhaps I should get some fruit tomorrow… or just eat more chocolate covered raisins.

I’ve been trying to calm down on purchasing toys since most of the ones I end up buying become clutter, and I’ve been doing pretty well… until I went to Disneyland last week. AH!

Disney came out with this adorable line of plushies called Pook-a-Looz about 2 years ago that kind of resemble Uglydolls. I bought Minnie Mouse last year at the Disney Store, and when I went to Disneyland they were on sale for 40% off. At first I was like, “Oh cool!” and quickly dismissed purchasing one, but then I saw Sulley from Monsters Inc.! I couldn’t pass him up, plus he made for an amazing pillow on the 7 hour car ride back home. ๐Ÿ™‚

My grandpa, who I call Papang (it means Daddy in Tagalog), turned 94 on June 29! Yesterday we had a big ‘ol celebration for him with tons of family. That side of my family is pretty damn huge, and even though not everyone was able to make it this year, there were still a lot of people! So basically, I haven’t had much time to rest after my Disneyland trip. I even spent 2 nights at the hotel we had the party in. And the day of the party, I spent a lot of time running errands with my sister, our cousin Amanda, and their boyfriends. Needless to say, I am รผber EXHAUSTED.

Ever since Papang turned 90, we’ve been having these grand parties for him and they also act as our family reunion. I think my favorite one was when he turned 92 in Las Vegas. Oh, the stories I could tell… but won’t do so on this blog. ๐Ÿ˜‰

This year we did it in Stockton again so Papang wouldn’t have to travel far, but this time at the Residence Inn. We’ve done it at Mallard’s (which is now closed) and the Scottish Rite Temple (which was just terrible) — out of the 3 times we’ve done it in Stockton, I think this was best location we’ve had it at. It was nice and roomy, we had the courtyard to ourselves, everyone stayed at the hotel so we were able to hang out before and after the party. Good times all around!

Here’s a picture of Papang with all the grandchildren –5 of them are missing though. He has 8 children, 18 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren (with another one on the way!), and 1 great great grandchild. So… like I said before, my family is HUGE.

I’m just glad that I’m fortunate enough to have a strong, healthy, generous father-figure like him in my life and also be able to say that he had a helping hand in raising me as I’ve lived with him since I was a newborn (sans my 2 years away in the bay area).

I’d also like to note, at 94, Papang still goes bowling twice a week and his average score is 175. Yeeeeaaaah!!!

I love you, Papang! ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m still alive!

Sorry I’ve been M.I.A. for the past week or so. Since my last post, I had been busy with work and packing for my Disneyland vacation! I just got back and I am E X H A U S T E D. I had fun, but my feet are ridiculously sore from all the walking I did for the past 4 days. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I’ll be posting some Disneyland stuff later on, but for now, here’s a picture of me with Mickey Mouse!!!
