Five Fandom Friday: Geeky Clothing Items I Need in My Closet Immediately

Screen-Shot-2014-09-25-at-7.48.24-AM

Megan of The Nerdy Girlie and Kristin of Super Space Chick started a really great series called Fandom Friday where they, and other geeky bloggers, list 5 things they’re geeky for. This Friday’s theme is fashion! I love all the fandoms I’m part of (derp) and I always draw fashion inspiration from all of them, so this feels like a good day to jump on the 5 Fandom Friday wagon 🙂

Pumpkin Coach Sweater by Cakeworthy x Disneybound

I love how Cakeworthy took the old Coach logo and put a Disney twist on it with Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage. And the subtle touches they did with what year it was established (1950, as in the the year Cinderella was released) and that they’re form “A land far, far away” is just so clever.

The Hiddleston bow by Dulce Calaveritas

Tom Hiddleston counts as a fandom, right? Duh, of course he does! So I totally feel justified in putting this adorable hair bow by Dulce Calaveritas on this list! As you can see it features Mr. Hiddleston’s handsome mug all over it. If you check out her shop, she also has a Benedict Cumberbatch bow and tons of other fun designs!

Doctor Who “Goodbye Raggedy Man” tank by Her Universe

The 11th Doctor holds a special place in my heart and I think this tank by Her Universe is such a fun a piece with it’s water color doodle print. I remember seeing it on Doctor Who’s Facebook page after the last day of San Diego Comic-Con and was sooo bummed that I didn’t get to buy it while I was there. If I made time to walk by the BBC America booth I would’ve gotten it in a heartbeat! At least I know it’s there on the internet when I have the monies to finally buy it! I think it would look so cute with an eggplant cardigan, skinny jeans, and some boots. 🙂

Star Wars x Vans Shoes

I’ve been drooling over these Journeys exclusive Star Wars shoes by Vans since they came out during the summer. They’re my favorite of the ones that have been released… I think that may be because Han Solo’s on them though. But let’s be honest: he’s the sh!t and super dreamy!

Sherlock “Bored” A-line Dress by Gold Bubble

This skater dress features Sherlock’s wallpaper complete with the spray painted happy face. How could I not add this onto my list of geeky clothing items I need?! I actually got to see this dress in person on none other than Victoria Schmidt a.k.a. Scruffy Rebel at Stockton-Con back in August and it’s too… what do the Brits say? Brilliant! It’s too bloody brilliant! The attention to detail on it is great because it has this faint blue line that goes throughout it just like the wallpaper on BBC’s Sherlock.

What’s on your geeky clothing wish list?

Cheers,
Nina

A Study in Floral Prints

outfit details – dress: American Rag // blazer: Merona // glasses: Derek Cardigan // belt: ?? // shoes: Bass // purse: Coach // Sherlock necklace: Le Fancy Geek Boutique (buy here)

So, what have I been up to lately? Besides incessantly scrolling through indeed.com for job listings, I’m completely caught up with Sherlock despite the fact that it only premiered in the US last Sunday (huzzah for the interwebz! And ERMERGERD Benedict Cumberbatch ♡ Yowza). I’ve been in Sherlock mode for over a month — I re-watched series 1 & 2 after I scored both of them on DVD for under $19 thanks to the British TV sale Barnes & Noble had! But my attention is slightly shifting towards Downton Abbey since it just started here recently as well. I yelled at the TV (mainly at Mary and whatshisface) while watching the latest episode and I’m aching to know what’s going to happen next, but I’ve decided I’m not going to seek out the rest of the fourth series on the internet because if I do I will be immobile for hours and I won’t get anything done at all , and that’s obviously not kosher.

I’m starting to get back into reading for funsies and also to study the way other writers write since I’m stumped with my own writing (style, story structure, dialog, etc). Right now I’m in the middle of Vendela Vida’s novel And Now You Can Go. As I read it, it feels very invasive; as if I’m intruding on the narrator’s innermost thoughts. And I love it for that. I’ll do a little write up about the book once I’m done with it completely. If the author’s name sounds familiar, she co-wrote the screenplay for one of my favorite movies, Away We Go, with Dave Eggers.

A few days ago I dug through a box full of old school assignments and found a rough draft for one of the short stories I started working on during my last semester of school. There were also some pages of feedback from my fellow classmates. I drew inspiration from “Rabbit Fur Coat” by Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins — the story is about a daughter’s lack of a relationship with her dysfunctional mother who is utterly obsessed with her rabbit fur coat. Reading it for the first time in years, I thought, “Hey, this isn’t bad. This is actually decent.” And then I wonder why I ever stopped writing at all. I started coming up with ideas for a third draft and took notes while I was at work the other day (it’s okay, I was just helping proctor exams!). 🙂

The outfit pictures in this post were taken a few weeks ago before my birthday in downtown downton Livermore. Caitlin and I drove down to visit our fellow nerd and Creative Writing homie Amanda where we feasted on Italian food (my pasta kept me full well into the night, which irritated me because I wanted to eat a burrito), checked out a comic book store, and talked about our lack of writing since graduating and being unable to find jobs to help us evolve into fully functioning adults. We also discussed how there’s a lack of literature containing stories about 20-something characters that find themselves in the same situation we’re in — educated, living at home, struggling with adulthood. All coming of age stories are found in the teen-fiction section. Where are the ones for adults? We talked about how we need to change this. We also talked about Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch a lot (for obvious reasons).

I think I may have worn this outfit a million times already, it’s basically one of my go-to’s for work and my Sherlock necklace looks quite dandy against the floral print of the dress. And check out my shoes! I scored these saddle shoes at the Bass outlet in Vacaville a couple months ago for $50. Every time I go there I always hope to find a pair, but they never ever have any in stock. So that made it a justifiable purchase, right? Right. Of course it did.

In case any of you are wondering how I’m doing with that New Years resolution where I don’t buy any new clothing items unless they’re under $7: I’m doing surprisingly well. The only thing is I’m finding myself buying more DVDs and books so I’m thinking I have to add those things in the resolution mix as well. *le sigh*

Cheers,
Nina

Hold Up…

20131202-073151.jpgI’m quite annoyed with myself for not reaching my goal of opening up shop during the holiday weekend. Le Fancy Geek Boutique may not be ready for Cyber Monday, however I WILL be opening up shop this Wednesday, the 4th of December NO MATTER WHAT. Mind you, it’ll be a soft opening featuring necklaces I’ve been able to photograph (I was not expecting the glass domes on the bezels to be ridiculously difficult to photograph — if anyone has tips, feel free to share!).

Thank you all so much for your enthusiasm about my new pieces and for your patience. And as a treat, there will be a coupon code to save $5 on your first order! More details to come.

Once again, thank you all soooo much for being patient with me!

Cheers,
Nina

Once Upon a Bauble…

Hey my little ponies! I’ve been absent from le blog for a bit because…

  1. Both of my jobs are keeping me busy. Way too busy, in my opinion. But hey, mama needs $$$
  2. Number 1 has kept me away from doing outfit shoots. 🙁
  3. In my spare time I’ve been working on new necklaces for my Etsy store, which has been rebranded as Le Fancy Geek Boutique! 🙂

For those that follow me on Instagram, you already knew about #3 as I’ve been posting photos of my latest creations every so often. I’m really excited with the way they’re turning out! I promise they don’t look all blurry like they do in the picture above though. I still need to tweak with the other designs I came up with. My 11th Doctor and Rory images printed out too dark and the Stormtrooper’s head needs to be reduced in size since the glass magnifies the image a bit. <— that sounds like gibberish. o,0

And there are still some other non-bezel pieces that I need to work on before I open up shop again. I have some little Lego looking Doctor Who toys that I’m going to be making necklaces out of just in time for the 50th anniversary!

Do you see any of your favorite characters in there?

Cheers,
Nina
