Put a Horse On It

outfit details: cardigan: H&M // dress + belt: Xhileration // necklace: borrowed from Jen // boots: American Rag (buy here) // glasses: Brooks Brothers (buy here) // bracelet: Anna Grace Designs (buy here)

After reading the Harry Potter series, the idea of having a spirit animal (or in the world of Harry Potter’s case, a patronus) has been fascinating to me. I used to think really hard about what mine would possibly be — I finally settled on a unicorn, because I’ve always had an affinity for all equine creatures and unicorns are magical, so why not? I mean, how cool would a figure of a unicorn look bursting out of the end of a wand? SO COOL THAT I GOTTA SAY IN ALL CAPS, THAT’S HOW COOL.

Not too long ago, I took a quiz on Zimbio to see what my patronus would be and my result was a horse, which isn’t very far off from a unicorn, so I’m contempt.

Anyhow, one thing I noticed during my Portland holiday was that there was an abundance of horses. Not particularly in Portland itself, but on the way there we passed by plenty of farms and all these horses were just out there, doing their horsey thing (and by that I mean they were looking all regal and whatnot). I made it a point to yell “PONIES!” anytime I saw a group of them, just because their presence was so beautiful, I had to make it known. I also saw plenty of merchandise in stores with horses plastered on them, especially when Jen and I visited the Lan Su Chinese Garden‘s gift shop as it’s the year of the horse. That’s the location of where all these outfit shots were taken too. 🙂

I found a book about spirit animals at Powell’s City of Books called Spirit Animals: Unlocking the Secrets of Our Animal Companions by Stefanie Iris Weiss;  the cover has a horse on it, so of course I had to browse through it. Here’s what it said about the horse:

Personality: Horses long to run free. They are in their element when untethered, galloping gallantly across the plains without saddle or bridle. A wild horse is a wonder to behold; it’s happiest without boundaries.

Guiding Powers: When you feel the need to move, get out, and break free of restriction, the horse is your ultimate spirit animal guide. If you’ve been stuck in a limiting mental sphere or emotionally constrained situation, consult the free-spirited horse. If you want to get away from it all by taking a vacation but are deterred by financial difficulties or personal obligations, the horse will show you how to dissolve boundaries and roam.

After reading it, I was slightly flabbergasted because it perfectly described the state I’m in. And I totally have no business spending what little money I have to go out on lavish vacations, yet I just went to Portland, New York is next in line, and Comic-Con afterwards. I feel so very stuck where I am, and job hunting just isn’t working out in favor, and I just want to get out there and explore… is it weird to believe in signs or make connections to these kind of coincidences? Probably, but I don’t care. My spirit animal is a mutha’uckin’ horse. I mean, I have a tattoo of one for crying out loud.

What do you think your spirit animal/patronus be?

Cheers,
Nina

Da Na Na Na Na Na Na Na BATMAN!

outfit details – dress: Material Girl // cardigan & belt: Merona // earrings: H&M // watch: Disney x Timex // hair bow: upcycled from a broken headband // shoes: Target ballet flats I DIY’d with Batman fabric // glasses: Derek Cardigan (buy here)

Batman’s been my favorite superhero ever since I was an itty bitty thing. I didn’t necessarily read the comics, but I watched the old campy version with Adam West all the time with my grandpa, and of course I loved the Tim Burton movies that came out when I was around 5, and Batman: The Animated Series was an after-school staple! My sister and I even had hair ribbons and shoe laces adorned with Batman’s emblem — I guess I’ve been doing the geeky-girly thing since I was a little lady. Ha! Anywho, I attempted to do some color blocking and pattern mixing with this outfit by mixing my kelly green lace dress with royal blue and hints of yellow to compliment Batman’s logo on my shoes that I DIY’d myself! I made them in August by using acrylic paint, Mod Podge, and Batman fabric on an old pair of ballet flats that I  found a bit boring. They looked really awesome after they were done and I was extremely happy with the way they turned out, but after wearing them twice the paint and bits of fabric started falling off. NOOO! I still need to figure out how to salvage them. Are there any crafty folks that might be able to give me some sage advice? I did manage to salvage the hair bow I’m wearing though — it was originally on a headband that Jen and Shanice picked up for me in Japan Town, but when I found it behind my vanity it was broken! I ripped the bow off and attached it to a clip and voila — insta-accessory! And the polkadots are kind of comic bookish since the illustrations on some of them, particularly the really old ones, were pretty dotty. 🙂

Cheers,
Nina

Le Fancy Geek & Nerd

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving and weekend! Sorry I’ve been M.I.A. — I’ve been busy with holiday/family stuff and having epic adventures with my boyfriend, Tim. <— holy shit! He’s my bestest friend, but things changed about a week ago, and it was all very unexpected. And that’s all I’m going to say about that because I don’t see the need to elaborate on the mushy details. 🙂

But I just wanted to show off how snazzy we looked on Thanksgiving!

The Caffeine Predicament

In case you’ve been reading my blog from the beginning, this outfit may look a bit familiar to you (see?). I’m not a celebrity, nor am I “internet famous,” therefore it’s okay to do repeats every now and then. Plus it’s not like it’s the exact same thing — my boots are brand new! I’ve been wanting a pair of Victorian-esque boots and nabbed this pair by Madden Girl at Marshall’s over the weekend — they were on sale and the last pair, AND were my size, AND fit over my calves! If that’s not kismet at it’s finest, then I don’t know what is. Lately I’ve been able to find boots that go over my calves — either my calves are shrinking or designers are being kind to those with voluptuous legs. It’s great, but at the same time not kind on my wallet since I’m a full-fledged boot addict and unemployed. D:

Class was cancelled today so I ran a few errands — my aunt said she’s been getting overcharged on my phone bill because I keep going over data (which is dumb, because I have unlimited data!), so I headed to my phone carrier since I knew Marquis was working today. Once I got there I realized I didn’t have my phone with me. LAME. At least I don’t live too far from the shopping center. Marquis also figured out why my phone hasn’t been able to send text messages to certain people, so yay! I also found out I’m eligible for an upgrade. I shall wait for the iPhone 5 since my Droid X is driving me a bit mad.

Afterwards I wandered around Target, and then bought some bitter spray for Rory at PetSmart so he’ll stop chewing things he’s not supposed to… like my shoes. I’m gonna have to return it though because the little butthead likes the way it tastes. Oi.

My mom has been going on and on about Starbucks’ Salted Caramel Mocha. I finally tried one on my way out of Target and she really wasn’t effing around — that shit is delicious. I wasn’t expecting much, but after the first sip I was like, “Is this the hot, sweet nectar of the gods?”

This gif sums up the way I felt about it after I finished:

But I forgot how much my body disdains coffee and I’m currently feeling a bit lightheaded and nauseous. This totally blows. It’s not fair how I can’t partake in the consumption of coffee. I suppose I could go decaf, but that doesn’t sound too appealing. I guess I’ll just stick with tea. *sigh* Why am I blogging right now? I should be napping or puking something. x___x

/facepalm
